Daniel Pink is not a researcher or a manager: he’s an author. But his assessment of modern research and motivation theories in his book, Drive (geni.us/uq3EBO), is valuable. He gives his concept of Motivation 3.0.

LESSON NOTES
Daniel Pink wrote Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us geni.us/uq3EBO.
He divides our understanding of motivation into 3 stages:
Motivation 1.0: Survival Focus
Biological needs from the base levels of Maslow’s Hierarchy
Motivation 2.0: Drives Focus
Extrinsic motivators: ‘carrot & stick’. Consequences for action/inaction: either reward or punishment
Motivation 3.0: Intrinsic motivators
Come from within ourselves. Drives for autonomy, mastery, and purpose
Pink distinguishes Algorithmic and Heuristic Work:
Algorithmic work: Simple rule-based tasks, susceptible to Extrinsic motivation
Heuristic work: Requires constant interpretation and reasoning, needs Intrinsic motivation
7 reasons why Extrinsic Motivation doesn’t work for heuristic tasks. They can:
1. Extinguish intrinsic motivation
2. Diminish performance
3. Crush creativity
4. Crowd out good behavior
5. Encourage cheating, shortcuts, and unethical behavior.
6. Become addictive
7. Foster short-term thinking
Heuristic Tasks need Motivation 3.0
Leaning heavily on Self Determination Theory, Pink suggests 3 Pillars of Intrinsic Motivation
1. Autonomy
2. Mastery
3. Purpose
He also hypothesizes that there are two types of people:
Type X: primarily motivated by Extrinsic rewards - cf McGregor’s Theory X
Type I: primarily motivated by intrinsic drive - cf McGregor’s Theory Y

3. Consider the work your team does. How much of it is Algorithmic work, and how much is Heuristic work? (2 MC CPD Points)
4. Also, think about each of the people in your team. Who is predominantly a Type X person, and who is more a Type I person? (2 MC CPD Points)
5. Now review the balance of your management & motivation styles. Thinking about what you learned in exercises 3 & 4, have you got the balance right? What changes do you need to make to the way you motivate your team? (4 MC CPD Points)

This model goes really well with Self determination theory and provides a place for expectancy theory in type x where SDT did not

I'd go further - Pink is not a theorist but a writer. He got a large chunk of this model from SDT. But he also synthesized in lots of other ideas (hence his focus on meaning/purpose). My video on Ryan & Deci's Self Determination Theory: kzbin.info/www/bejne/moPCXmmmist2eMk
