Daniel Smith Enviro-Friendly Watercolors / Join me in this color study of three (new to me) Daniel Smith Enviro-Friendly Oxide Watercolors that are as beautiful and dramatic as their back story. I will swatch a value scale and do color mixes with real time reactions and over reactions, lol. . This color study is focused on how these yellows mix with Quinacridone and Pthalo colors, these are the colors I especially love to paint with, and they have a very high tinting/mixing strength so will be good indicators of how these oxide colors mix in general. Additionally I tried to mix the colors as consistently as my experience level allows, to get a similar range of color mixes for comparisons. I primarily paint with watercolor pours and wet on wet applications so my opinions expressed are reflecting that type of application.

OMG..I LOVE my Caran Ache palette!! I do both eastern and western paintings..and love finding ways to mix the 2 mediums. I only have 1 ink dish left, for grinding sticks..I kind of gave my inexpensive ones away to people who wanted to try grinding their own ink. The one I have though belonged to my first tutor..was her grandmothers..she is currently 94, so…I practically keep my antique, hand carved ink dish in a safe. 😂. Instead of buying another one..AND, I had heard I could use this textured palette for my inktense, as well as my, also antique, colored ink sticks-I bought 2 and I LOVE them! I use them both for grinding and mixing like you did. I bought one for my best friend, a retired art professor early last month. She bought another one and plans on getting 1 or 2 more. 😁

If you’re looking for an Indanthrone that has less of a drying shift, try Anthraquinone Blue from M Graham. Same pigment, PB60, plus it has a bit of texture. (I hope I spelled those colours correctly…)

I read the iron oxide has to be cleaned before it can be used as a pigment. I'm not sure how enviro-friendly it really is.

Maybe a better way to explain would be paints I consider non earth friendly (toxic) such as the traditional Cobalts, Nickel, Cadmiums, Manganese, Titanium, Chromium. Can you imagine how SAD I was to consider taking Cobalt Teal off my palette? So due to this deep dive into trying to find a non toxic palette, I also had to find substitutes to beloved colors.. I will be sharing my final choices soon. 🤍

Toxic as in not septic safe? 😱

Hi Sue, good morning friend! Here is more information on the Prop 65 and ACMI labeling, it is a quick way to know if your paints have any toxic ingredients. Just look for the AP label on the back of each tube. Most would say as long as we don’t eat, drink or inhale our paints there is no worry. As far as septic systems go, I’m not knowledgeable on how these paints break down in them, I do know Acrylics can be a problem, and artists that use known toxic paints (traditional cadmium for instance) will not pour those down the drain. Some water their plants with the water instead. Or filter it through a sock/pantyhose to filter and paint particles out. If you have concerns you can always make the switch to using paints with the AP label on the back.
