Learn how to use interference watercolor paints to add shine, sparkle and an iridescent shimmer to your watercolor paintings. Great for painting glass, water, hummingbirds, butterfly wings...anything that has an iridescent quality. Visit me on Facebook: / kellydrakeart or Instagram @kelly.drake

Very helpful. Thank you. I was gifted a set of the Van Gogh interference and metallic paints and didn’t know anything about interference paints or how to use them.

I have been wanting to see more about these kinds of paints and how you can actually use them in a painting like this. Thank you.

Tzipporah Bragg You're so welcome. I hope the video helped. You might want to watch my newest video as well. In it I use the interference paints in several different ways. If you search for my channel "Art on the Brain", it should be the first video to come up. Happy painting!

Nice video but could you do another where you take each interference color and go across each color rather than vertically. Would like to see each over all the colors. Frustrated that you didn’t do this. I like to mix things up

Carole Traynor Of course! I'm working on the subtitles for the video you mentioned. It's taking me some time, because on this particular one, I have to type it all in. Some of them have automatic subtitles that I can edit (much faster). So, I'll keep working on it. ♥️

thank you! I really would love to try something unconventional, although I know people don't think iridescent, metallic colors fit into watercolor palette. Time changes and I am definitely willing to be a pioneer painter! Anyway, even if they don't make great professional paintings, these DS special effect paints are by all means fun to play with!

The quality of your video is great from my perspective. I'm especially interested in the edge work where the transparent watercolor and the Interference paint start and stop.

Carmen Petersen I agree! You could create some very interesting effects by leaving some areas without an interference layer next to areas with the interference. I'm playing around with different ways to use these & will post another video on this soon. Thank you for the comment! 🌷

Can you mix them directly into the paints? Have you tried that? Wonder what that would look like.
@ArtontheBrain
@ArtontheBrain 6 жыл бұрын
Great question! You can definitely mix your regular watercolor paints with the interference colors. It takes quite a bit of interference paint to get the color to look iridescent, so I squeeze some directly from the tube. I also advise mixing these colors in a container separate from your watercolor palette. You probably don't want to contaminate all of your paints with that shimmer from the luminescent paint. One more thing...the SILVER interference paint seems to work best for this. It especially looks great when mixed with ultramarine violet. Happy painting!

I would love to understand the difference between interference and iridescent colors? Could you help me with that? Thank you.
@ArtontheBrain
@ArtontheBrain 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Anne! I have to say, I've really only tested the interference colors, thus far. But, my understanding is that the iridescent paint reflects more light (so it's probably more like the interference silver, which shows up better than the other colors and looks almost opaque), the interference paint luminesces when you change the angle of the light, the duochrome paint changes color when you change the angle of the light, and the pearlescent mixes with other colors to make them look more "pearlescent". Here is the explanation Daniel Smith gives: What are the differences between the 4 types of Luminescent Watercolors? Iridescent: Reflection - particle of light hits paint/pigment matrix and bounces back. Much like a mirror. Interference: Refraction - particle of light enters the paint/pigment matrix and scatters light. Duochrome: is one pigment that bounces between two colors. Pearlescent: adds opalescence - like an opal or pearl - to the color it’s mixed or glazed with. Hope this helps! Kelly

The music drove me nuts. Can you please label your swatches (in marker, not in pencil because we can't read it, even at high def. as I discovered from your other video.) That helps us go back and find different colours to look at them again, without having to rewatch the whole video.
