Oh Lunar Black is fantastic! I love that paint, because due to the fact that it barely has any tint of color it's perfect for adding black granulation to other colors without creating "mud". Surprisingly, even yellow and Lunar Black work well. That way I can add some texture to otherwise non-granulating colors (for example if I want to create the impression of fabric a touch of Lunar Black does the job well). It's also why I don't own Lunar Blue and Lunar Violet though, I figured that I might as well mix them myself by adding Lunar Black to the violet and blue tones I already have. Thank you for reviewing the Lunar colors by the way, it was wonderful to see them all together! ♥

I’ve been using diluted Lunar Blue for some wintery skies and snowy shadows, and more concentrated Lunar Blue for silhouetted evergreen trees. I love the texture. It gives my Christmas cards some personality.

Hello, I think these muted color are beautiful. I am one who likes more subtle colors, and these, while they are not as bright as regular primary colors, still have an strong affect....at least I think so. I mostly do drawings from nature, especially trees with accents on the patterns of bark, leaves, networks of small branches and so on...I like to add color, but not lose the lines. These are so transparent, I think I could get lovely effects. Thank you for this review.

I really like the combination of Lunar Earth and Fr. Ultramarine. I have a tube of Moonglow. I use it for random effects. I will lay down a wash of Moonglow and drop a touch a Phthalo Blue (thinned down like you are going to use it in a wash) to the wet paint. It produces interesting effects.

I have moonglow and use it for either texture effects or shading. I like the lunar earth very much and it’s next on my list. I also want lunar black to make my own moody granulating colors like blue and voilet.

I like to paint close up views of nature and have used the lunar colors to suggest shadows and "out of focus" elements in my watercolor paintings. Love the granulation and they mix well with many colors. Moonglow was the first one I used years ago in a close up of a cluster of grapes and grape leaves just before harvest. I punched up the muted tones in the shadows by juxtaposing and mingling another of my DS favorites, quinacridone gold.

I love lunar red earth and moon glow often.. I was just in Arizona and the lunar red rock was perfect for the adobe and red rock colors.. the granulation worked wonderfully. Thanks!

Nice, Teoh! I really dig the Lunar Earth and Lunar Red Rock. I used to use Moonglow, but it's really not a good mixer and I didn't use it enough on it's own, but it is a beautiful hue. Hmmmm... I do like that Lunar Black, too....

I use Lunar Blue for shading/ drop shadows, it isn't as intense as your swatch, mine shifts more towards a greenish-grey than the phthalo blue (probably because I have put it in a half pan, so it lost some intensity). I don't know if all batches are the same, but mine definitely has some "sparkle" to it, like they have put mica powder in it or something. It's one of the most special colours I own, together with the Sodalite Genuine and the Cascade Green (which separates and shifts from yellow to blue). Daniel Smith know their stuff!

Lunar black is great for painting the bark on white birches (also, I think, called aspens in western U.S.)

My favorite of the set is Lunar Red Rock - a beautiful earthy red. The Lunar Violet reminds me of Payne's Grey. I would have liked to have seen a comparison.

I have Lunar Blue and Moonglow, and also Potter's Pink, which is really granulating. I actually bought them because of their granulation, I sometimes like to create effects, for example they can give great texture on a wall, or just anything that would be textured. I recently painted a frog and I added some to the belly, which was all like, corrugated. Now I really want to try Lunar Earth and Lunar Black!

These would be great for painting rock or very rough surface textures in landscapes!

Thanks for this swatch collection. I was thinking about purchasing Lunar Violet, but there’s barely any color in it. I think I’ll just go with Lunar Black instead. Also, Red Rock looks gorgeous!

I have all of these except for Lunar Earth which is high on my list of DS paints to add for my collection. Lunar Red Rock is in my main palette and I use it as an Indian Red. I mostly like to throw it into some flesh tones in small doses to create more neutral orange and brown skin color. Moonglow I either just use straight on its own for backgrounds or I use it as a neutral tint to knock colors down, particularly Yellow Ochre. Lunar Blue is one I use interchangeably with Blue Apatite (I prefer the latter, which is on my main palette). It's a greyish blue and I have used it to depict grey hair and for shadows. Lunar Violet is one that works best as a mixer if you want to get granulation into a bright color, particularly with Reds or to intensify granulation in Ultramarine. Lunar Black works similarly but I really don't like black watercolor as it just looks like soot to me. I want to like Lunar Black more but I just don't click with it.

Moonglow has a permanent place in my palette. I think I need to check out the Lunar Red Rock. I’m a granulation junkie and Venetian Red is a great color, but it is missing some granulation for me. Great video, as always!

I enjoy using Moonglow for shadows when I don't need them to be super deep, adds a nice twist.

Except the last one I like and use all them. But here the violet seems to me like black and black seems to me a bit greenish, strange. 😉 Thanks for this demo.👍

Lunar earth and Red rock look useful for mixtures, but I agree with you that the other Lunar colours, based on PBk 11, are less useful.

I use Moonglow as shadows. I don't even have a black on my palette. I was considering Lunar Black, but am questioning that now, even though Jane Blundell says it's the only black on her palette.

I just bought Lunar Earth, Lunar Black, and Lunar Violet. I don't really like the Lunar Violet, I find it too similar to Lunar Black and I think I'll change it for the Lunar Blue. Lunar Earth is gorgeous.
