Daniel Smith Color Study Yellows / Join me in this color study of three (new to me) Daniel Smith yellows that have won their way onto my palette. Hansa Yellow Medium, Mars Yellow, and Quinacridone Deep Gold. I will swatch a value scale and do color mixes. This color study is focused on how these yellows mix with Quinacridone and Pthalo colors, these are the colors I especially love to paint with, and they have a very high tinting/mixing strength so will be good indicators of how these yellow colors mix in general. Additionally I tried to mix the colors as consistently as my experience level allows, to get a similar range of color mixes for comparisons. I primarily paint with watercolor pours and wet on wet applications so my opinions expressed are reflecting that type of application.
If you have a specific color you would like me to do a color study please consider donating to www.buymeacoffee.com/watercol... - be sure to leave the color name too for future videos! Thank you!

Hi Iris, yes it’s so easy to make assumptions about colors how they look straight out of the tube but these studies help me so much to learn more about them 😀

I think the PY97 is about as lightfast as the PY3, and it hasn’t held up great in my lightfastness tests. If you are interested in a cool yellow (though not as cool as PY3) that is lightfast also in pale washes, and mixes beautifully, I highly recommend Roman Szmal PY109, I think it’s called Isoindolinone Yellow Light (if I remember correctly). I absolutely love it! If you want a weaker tinting cool yellow there’s always PY175, Daniel Smith, W&N and Holbein all carry it, though the DS version seems to be the weakest of them. As for favourite Earth Yellows I absolutely love the DS Monte Amiata Natural Sienna as well as the QoR Transparent Yellow Oxide, they are both transparent , bright and great mixers. The QoR one granulates somewhat! 😊

What a fun way to mix and learn about your watercolors! I'm a big fan of the OG PO49 Quin Golds, still have a few tubes, but of the two new formulas I like the Quin Gold Deep for mixing, feel like it's closer to the original for getting those glowy, natural greens. I use the DS watercolor sticks like pans, but like the Caran d'Ache palette a lot might have to get one to stick in my travel kit. Thanks, I'm enjoying your channel!

This was fun to watch and I am definitely adding add mars yellow!! You found a jewel in that one. Definitely agree it needs more love and attention. I’m also intrigued by the deep quin gold and have found anything with P150 creates glowing color mixes. Just curious….have you ever tried Aussie Red Gold? It’s gorgeous alone and has a certain glow. It’s definitely more on the reddish side.. I was wondering how it compares to deep quin gold …. I’m sure they are different but how much??? I wish I could send you a small pan for you to mix and share with us. Would you mind?? Seriously problem if you don’t or can’t. Again, it was such fun and loved your excitement ❤. It definitely lifted my spirit 😊 Sending blessings, Nancy Rolfe

Love color studies as I’m a pigment nerd. I’m curious on the Quin Gold swatch as it seems really dark and blah. You may want to try that again. But, with that said, I have to admit that I have the original Quin Gold that is the most beautiful color. When I heard it was being discontinued (because they ran out of the original pigment), I bought several back up tubes. They are so precious to me I should put them in my safe!! If you’d like a full pan of it, I’m happy to share so let me know.

That is so sweet! Thank you - it could also be that this paper is vintage, an old donated sketchbook, not sure what year it was made but it even smells old. 😂 it is so beautiful and well constructed I figured it would work well for searching

Per your link..you’re doing the same studies I’ve been doing! Not the same mixing colors, (need to put more quins on my mixing palette!), but about to go do a study on Mars Yellow…HOW had I missed this color?! 🤷🏼‍♀️😂. I do both Chinese traditional painting & Western style..finding ways to merge techniques & materials. Although I do primarily landscapes & “Bird and flower painting”; as I said, I’m TRYING, WANTING to branch out more, especially painting critters.. Wondering…mars yellow w a touch of PR233 for peachy pink Kitty Leela hair 🤔 Actually, might need something stronger..time to play!😁

Might try just a dot of quin red in mars yellow after seeing your mixes. As for quin gold deep..I prefer making my own from PO48 & PY150….in fact I like that mix more than my handmade PO49. It just doesn’t have the “glow” the original professional brands had. BUT, just add a teeny touch more of PY150 to the PO48? My best friend just texted me..I’d sent her the link to the DS Zoom today..I wasn’t able to make it, but had sent her some mixes I did comparing prodigal sons PB33 (my first, and possibly last attempt at mulling 😂) and DS Manganese blue hue w PB15. There’s more differences than I originally thought there would be. As pretty as the hue is, it just didn’t have the vibrancy the original pigment has (and yes, I’m aware of the toxicity..what little I have left, lives in my cabinet with my large chunk of gamboge and my real cinnabar.). Anyways, my dear friend texted “good night to our favorite mad scientist. I’ll be over tomorrow with your new lab coat” 😂

This is a bit late, but have you tried DS Azo yellow? To my eyes it’s a true yellow, doesn’t lean more towards green or orange. Mixes beautifully with all my reds and blues. It’s worth a try !
