My favourite character by far (in probably all of the books I’ve read) is Darrow. He grows so much, and he does what’s necessary. He isn’t afraid of violence or killing and he’s willing to sacrifice the people he loves for the greater good (I hate characters that sacrifice the entire fate of the world for a random character I don’t care about) and he’s just....Darrow is perfection. But in the next trilogy...oh my god will your heart break. It’s like the older brother of the Red Rising trilogy. It’s more political, but IT HURTS SO MUCH. I actually didn’t used to like Mustang, but then I saw her POV in the second trilogy and I absolutely adore her now.

I love how the first series sets up Darrow as the legendary epic hero, seeing his ascension to that (nearly) Messiah level role. And then the following books do their best to tear Darrow down back to his mortal roots. He's still impressive and dangerous, but you no longer feel like he's this walking deity who can just smite his foes with his wrath. You see the broken man who never really figured out how to put down the sword and accept peace, and it calls into question many of the things you like about these characters.

I just finished this series in the last few months. It was so good. Red Rising was his first book he ever wrote, which is insane. I actually don’t think this is correct. I believe he wrote 7 or 8 books (not sure exactly but several) before being published. I remember a conversation Pierce had with VE Schwab where he talked about his 100’s or rejections and the fact that he once wrote a unicorn book he considered “terrible”.

YES! Morning Star is the best! Many people like the 2nd the most.

I feel like Morningstar sets the tone for how good Iron Rain and Dark Age are. He improves with every book and it is incredibly satisfying to see. I know some people do not like the direction Iron Gold and Dark Age went in, but they are beautiful in execution.

Yes yes yes. This is exactly how I feel about the red rising series, put more eloquently than I ever could. Great review!

Also! Keep reading the series. The plot convenience makes sense as the plot continues to unfold in iron gold and dark age. It seems unplanned at the outset, but it’s interweaved thereafter.

What stood out to me was the gala massacre in golden son. The emotions and chaos is what made me see what humanity really is.

I just finished Red Rising the other day and am waiting for Golden Sun at the library. I've heard that the series gets better and I started it for a read along. So I'm gonna keep going. I just want to say that Sevro is the best character, hands down. I want only the best for him. If he dies, I will be so upset

Oh man, I can't wait to see you react to Iron Gold.
