If you'd like to check out the Red Rising special editions they can be found here: www.juniperbooks.com/products/red-rising-jackets-only-set They were sent to me for free but I am of course allowed to say what I really think. I think they pretty dope, but more so for people who like to make their shelf pop. Coupon code: TheGoblin15 for 15% off. Now only works for the WoT and Red Rising covers due to websites hijacking the code

I liked him a lot for his quiet, morbid ways in the first two, but felt he became a bit of a pompous loudmouth in the last one and preferred when he wasn't so love-struck :). I also felt that him challenging Darrow for alpha-male over his wolfpack was a bit meh. I would prefer if his gang was only loyal to Sevro, but Sevro was always loyal to Darrow rather than their weird power struggle in the middle of the third book.

While I own and love the books, the audio books, for me, bring a whole other feeling to the series. Tim Gerard Reynolds absolutely owns the entire feeling of Darrow as a character. You've articulated all my feelings about this series so well. Love your emphasis on the vocabulary and naming that Brown does, and the trauma that Darrow faces throughout. Stellar review of a stellar book! A fun note on names: all the Golds are named ___ au ____. Silvers are named ___ ag ____. Coppers are named ___ cu _____. Au, Ag, and Cu are the atomic symbols for gold, silver, and copper respectively. Subtle, but effective.

The beginning monologue of Darrow in this book was absolutely devastating and my favorite start to a book ever. At this point I almost regret reading books 4/5 because they are so dark. Unless book 6 wraps up like book 3, I’m afraid I’m going to hate the whole second era. Are the books good? Yeah, totally 5 stars, but they hurt my feelings 😭. The Red Rising series is easily my second favorite series of all time after the Stormlight Archive- and I’ve read A LOT of books, so that’s saying something.

I'm not normally a sci-fi fan, and when I read the synopsis of the first book, I thought it was a dystopian, so I bought the whole trilogy. I really enjoyed the first book, but I was NOT prepared for the second and third ones. Holy stinkin' crap balls, I LOVED this trilogy!!!!!! I laughed, I cried, and even over a year after finishing it, it still sticks with me. I read a LOT, so I don't keep many books after finishing them or else I would be on my third or fourth storage unit by now, but this trilogy was a keeper. My favourite character by far (in probably all of the books I’ve read) is Darrow. He grows so much, and he does what’s necessary. He isn’t afraid of violence or killing and he’s willing to sacrifice the people he loves for the greater good (I hate characters that sacrifice the entire fate of the world for a random character I don’t care about) and he’s just....Darrow is perfection. But in the next trilogy...oh my god will your heart break. It’s like the older brother of the Red Rising trilogy. It’s more political, but IT HURTS SO MUCH. I actually didn’t used to like Mustang, but then I saw her POV in the second trilogy and I absolutely adore her now.

I really loved this trilogy, one thing that captivated me was how the lead character became more and more devided within him between red and gold, how the great villains slowly made him doubt his belief systems and the paradigm shifts of the story...I loved it! I liked the first book, and I was apprehensive that the following stories would get worse, rarely and author can portray the political and internal conflict so well, and he does. I was super impressed with the story, to me the best written in the last 10 years tbh. I never get tired of recommending this to my friends hahahah

In general I love content in you channel to be stuff you enjoy to do and it really does seem like it's a lot of fun going through special edition "unboxing". I hope that it's an understood factor though, that Juniper sending you the covers "personally" might result in conflicting motivations from not wanting to burn any bridges. In terms of integrity and since a coupon code is included, it might be worth acknowledging the thin line between review/unboxing/advertisement. I did enjoy all your reviews of the type and looking forward to the next one!

My friend and I just finished book 5 (we took turns reading chunks of it and passed it back and forth) and we both agreed that it is VERY RARE for a series (of any genre) to keep kicking arse when you finish book 5. You made the comment (and I agree) that it's unusual for a book 3 to be better than book 1 or 2 but in this case he just keeps knocking them out of the park. So many times we both read a part and went "WHAT!?!? NO WAY!!!" Can't wait for book 6.

I wonder if the editors forced the author to dumb down the first book and try to get the HG/MH audience.

Fantastic channel and videos, Daniel. I’m a big fan. The Red Rising series was my first foray into Sci-Fi and I am glad for it.

I love how the first series sets up Darrow as the legendary epic hero, seeing his ascension to that (nearly) Messiah level role. And then the following books do their best to tear Darrow down back to his mortal roots. He's still impressive and dangerous, but you no longer feel like he's this walking deity who can just smite his foes with his wrath. You see the broken man who never really figured out how to put down the sword and accept peace, and it calls into question many of the things you like about these characters.

It’s like that. Tell me why some paper backs have better covers than hard books... I mean paper is fine but still, hard books appeal better. Library binding wasn’t what I thought it was gonna look like

I watched a conversation that Pierce and VE Schwab had on Instagram last summer and I feel like I remember him saying that he doesn’t plot too much, and uses a lot of sticky notes for things. I could definitely be misremembering but I’m pretty sure it was something that didn’t involve super hardcore outlining. Can’t wait for you to read the next portion of the series because WOOF it’s good.

Okay, you convinced me. I tried to read Red Rising some time ago and just couldn't go on with it. I finished dnfing it around page 50😬, something I don't do. I see all around that it gets better and tbh it does sound such a good series. Imma give it a try!

I'm really happy you ended up loving the trilogy! When you reviewed Red Rising I was kinda sad (you are right that it's the weakest of the 3 though). It's honestly my favorite sci-fi series so far. And I can't wait to start the second trilogy (waiting for the last book coming out).

I just finished this series in the last few months. It was so good. Red Rising was his first book he ever wrote, which is insane. His writing gets better as the series continues but that first book is pretty dang good for a first attempt. Sevro's storyline on forgiveness got me hard in the feels. I was listening to that part while on a run and I had a little bit of a hard time running while crying. I am surprised you didn't mention some of the BRUTAL stuff Darrow does in this book. Speaking of the Moon Lord's of Jupiter....

I actually don’t think this is correct. I believe he wrote 7 or 8 books (not sure exactly but several) before being published. I remember a conversation Pierce had with VE Schwab where he talked about his 100’s or rejections and the fact that he once wrote a unicorn book he considered “terrible”.

I feel like Morningstar sets the tone for how good Iron Rain and Dark Age are. He improves with every book and it is incredibly satisfying to see. I know some people do not like the direction Iron Gold and Dark Age went in, but they are beautiful in execution.

Also! Keep reading the series. The plot convenience makes sense as the plot continues to unfold in iron gold and dark age. It seems unplanned at the outset, but it’s interweaved thereafter.
