Paula from Mexico. I always figured that if it takes a lot of energy for the orchid in bloom, I need to help it and give it nutritions. So I always fertilize while in bloom!!!!!

Danielle I will take your advice. I have nothing to lose trying to save a orchid that had one root and a few strings including four small leaves that are floppy. You are doing such a good job explaining and please ignore anyone who is complaining about your speech. I can understand you clearly and your voice is very pleasant.

Thanks Danielle. It’s good to hear you can repot orchids while in bloom. Most store bought Phals are packed in spagnum moss, which promotes collar rot. It’s often a gamble to decide to repot or not. However when I ha e left my flowering mini phals in the spagnun they have shed buds, followed by leaves, one by one. It’s so disappointing!

What you say makes common sense. I have several with pitiful roots if any at all, and have left the root without vellum. I’m going to be patient to wait and see. I’ve nothing to lose, the plant would have died anyway. Most of my plants are in leca, gravel or a mixture of both and most have put out spikes and are blooming. AGREE with you, repot that orchid immediately, don’t wait until the roots are smothered by wet sphagnum or rotting bark. I really enjoy your videos and they help me decide how I want to g4ow my orchids.

I love your cheekiness it’s what keeps people growing along with their plants and gets people thinking! Keep up the good work! Also Michael from Michael’s orchid is another person who is constantly learning and changing the way he does things and goes into the biology and science of growing too so you should look into his videos. He does semi hydro growing though.

Excellent, thanks for the myth busting!👍👍😊😊😊 everyone seems to say if the velum in FWC goes mushy when you convert to FWC you cut the root off. I don’t subscribe to this either. I remove the mushy velum but keep the white inner root threads which don’t always seem to die off and I believe it does help to keep a minimal hydration until the new roots grow. I agree with all you’ve said 💯 %

Great video!!!! So many of these things are "orchids rules" and you have just clarified this for me. I have lost several plants by letting them just go as they would and not trying anything experimental.

Danielle, question if the velamin does fall off could you wrap the root in another material like those thin blue and white stripped table wipes?

Hi Danielle, am a great fan of yours. Most of your ideas I applied them to my orchids. My one orchid has no velamen at all. It grew a new small leaf but old leaves are undergoing extreme dehydration but green. Do you think it will grow new roots? Been 2 mos but no show of any roots. It’s in a semi water culture.
@daniellesorchidranch15914 жыл бұрын
Elizabeth Dasigan it absolutely can. If it seems dehydrated increase the frequency in which you water it. If there are zero roots consider soaking the stem a couple of days a week for 30 minutes at a time. Often a Phal will pull energy from old leaves to push new roots which may be part of her dehydration. As long as the leaves stay green there’s hope!

Hi Danielle! I am a beginner. Have rootless orchid, recently put in water. I know it depends on a lot of things to see a good change, but could you please tell me how long does it take for a rootless orchid to grow some new roots? And what to expect good/bad?

My friends leave her orchid fwc. No dry days. The roots are in water all the times and her orchid thrive and blooms for 7 years. Does fwc orchid needs dry drys? Im confused
@daniellesorchidranch15916 жыл бұрын
Mongsheel_ 몽실 some people like to keep the orchid in water all the time which is Full water culture. Some people like to give their orchid some dry days which is Semi Water culture. Each person usually decides what they want to do based on their growing environment. If you have very dry hot conditions you might prefer full water culture. Or if you have a cooler or very humid growing conditions you may find they like a few dry days and so will do semi water culture. You do what's best for you and your plants.

Amazing! I have question : why are my mini phals' roots rotting after repoting her from sphagnum to semi hydro (similar to water culture but with leca balls as media). It had some decent roots but when i repoted they started browning😢
@daniellesorchidranch15916 жыл бұрын
Pet House I don't have a good relationship with mini Phals so I may not be the best person to ask but I have found mine likes fertilizer at around 150 TDS and she doesn't like her roots to be crowded. I'm not sure how that will relate to semi hydro but that's what I'm doing for mine and she's still alive and is getting new leaves, roots and possibly flowers soon. Also she loves stronger light then my regular Phalaenopsis. Hope that helps.
@Natalie-hi9gc6 жыл бұрын
When the roots grow they grow in a way to better suit their environment but when you change the environment the existing roots (or I should say velamen) can’t readjust to the new environment because they’ve already gone through the growing process and were used to an environment with less moisture. So existing roots eventually die off but new ones will be better equipped to handle the constant moisture.
@daniellesorchidranch15916 жыл бұрын
Natalie there are many possible explanations as to why the roots have turned brown. How old are the roots? What have they been exposed to? High levels of nutrients can cause roots to brown but also in the natural life cycle the plant roots die and are replaced by new ones. Without having the plant in my personal care it is impossible for me to say what the problem is. In addition although I don't grow in semi hydro I would venture to say the roots were exposed to more moisture in the moss and are now getting less moisture and more air flow with the Leca. But again I don't have the plant so I wouldn't presume to state that any of these possiblies are definitive answers. Thank you for commenting and giving your ideas!
@daniellesorchidranch15916 жыл бұрын
nanette orchid thank you for sharing this information. I do not grow in Leca either so it's impossible for me to know why the roots are turning brown. I do follow quite a few people that do grow in Leca and they've never mentioned this phenomena of the roots dying and roots that are more suited to semi hydro growing. I will have to check out Michael's videos so I can get see his results as opposed to others who grow in semi hydro. Perhaps he is just being more honest about how orchids adjust to this growing method? In any case thanks for sharing and happy growing!

HELP, it’s been 3-4 weeks since I moved my orchids to water culture. Is it common for them to get some mushy roots while adjusting to water culture? I have a mini that has lost all but one root. I’m keeping the water levels low like you do, the leaves are nice and firm so I don’t know what I’m doing wrong.
@daniellesorchidranch15914 жыл бұрын
smirby100 often when we move an orchid to water culture whatever roots were not in good shape will start to rot. It’s not anything you are doing wrong it is just that the water speeds up the decomposition of a bad root. As long as the leaves stay firm it means that she has enough hydration. I have a few videos on how you can save an orchid with no roots I am also more recently posting videos on how to transfer orchids to water culture if you would like to check them out.

Vanessa Alexander it sounds like the solution you have come up with is a good one. I had a rootless Cattleya that I kept in just a little bit of water and now it has a new growth and new roots.
