At the end, where the community's creatures are scrolling, it makes me truly happy to see more then one Wilosaur. I probably still have it somewhere, but I remember before SPORE was released I had read about it in my brother's gamer magazine. After a point, my brother let me keep it because I was so obsessed with going back to those pages. LOL. But I was disappointed as hell that the Wilosaur, the mascot, never appeared in the finished product. SPORE was both one of the best things ever created and so obviously cut back on content... Animations are all procedural, which means that all movement of limbs are controlled by IK targets. Idea: A game mode that plays just like Spore's Creature stage with nests, migration, digging up parts, deciding between diplomacy and violence, but it's entirely with other players and it maybe plays out like a PUBG game except instead of starting from the sky everyone starts from the water after growing legs. Whoever evolves sapience first wins, or something like that. One tricky quagmire would be figuring out how the nests would work while the players aren't there. Maybe the player can set them on three different modes before leaving: Peaceful, Neutral, and Aggressive. Peaceful would be singing and dancing regardless, Neutral would be attacking if attacked or singing and dancing if sung and danced to, and Aggressive would be always attacking first. I could picture there being an implicit meta game to the game mode where diplomatic players would benefit by making creatures that the other players find funny. Matches could go a number of ways, probably being mostly just violence only considering it's probably mostly kids playing, but nests could team up on an overly aggressive nest that's a mutual enemy. Every small decision could have ripples. Maybe each player starts out with very few ways to communicate but as their brain develops they're allowed the ability to transmit more complex messages to one another? It'd be interesting to see the psychology of a player who's somehow conquered the meta and wins more often than most people. Are they antisocial or are they empathic? Also, surely a larger body would require more fuel to operate. Players would need to adapt accordingly to their environment, taking on only the mutations that they absolutely need and discarding everything that could waste energy and make the player need to consume more food. In order to compete with carnivorous players there might have to be adaptations for herbivores like flight or tree climbing in order to reach bountiful food sources at the tops of trees. Carnivores would be very high risk high reward depending on how far they are from other nests and how large the creatures are in their area. They may have to downsize and evolve some means to catch and consume insects, like a frog tongue or a poison cloud that brings bugs to the ground. I see this as a very useful tool for teaching people some semblance of how nature works, why we are the way that we are. Spore set out to do that, to mixed results. In real life things don't get binarily more good on an all encompassing scale the way that numbers increasing does in games. It's a very intuitive way to explain to children that all animals on Earth look the way they do because they stumbled into a biological niche. Imagine... it's like a Fortnite game except it depicts a surprisingly realistic expression of how evolution works, how culture evolved with some remnants of tribes being remaindered and others disappearing into the annals of completely undocumented history like a tree that fell in the woods with nobody there to hear it. Get existential.

@@HietakissaSeconding what Zynstein8059 said! Especially for passion projects, as long as you aren’t outright stealing people’s work and passing it off as your own and instead build off of ideas that you think are good but with your own twists and ideas that you want to see, there’s no reason to reinvent the wheel! Use projects you find inspiring or motivational or just plain cool and figure out exactly what about it leaves such a positive impact on you. Instead of seeking to “one-up” it or compete with it, wear your inspirations on your sleeve and use that as motivation to start your own projects! You’ll find that the process of ideating will become much more natural when you don’t pressure yourself to make something perfect right away, or to try and copy somebody else but make it “better”. Let your brain wander and take things in new directions, then when you’re finally ready to settle down on a project, you can sweep away the ideas that you found interesting but didn’t fit into their own documents to use as inspiration later! That way it doesn’t clutter and destabilize your work. Obviously there’s a lot more nuance to this and I’m just getting into the complex world of game development myself, but remember this: Everybody works at their own pace. Everybody learns at their own pace. Everybody creates at their own pace. And just because you don’t feel like you can do something now, doesn’t mean you can’t learn to do it in the future. And when you learn, you’ll often find a myriad of other useful experiences to draw from as well. In an industry where people compete all of the time, I think that it’s useful to remember that you don’t have to set standards for yourself that you don’t feel like you can reach yet. Key word here, yet. I believe in you, and good luck on your journey, wherever you choose to go and whatever you choose to take part in. You’ve got this. o7 (P.S. Sorry for the novel, I’m just very passionate about these kinds of things!)

This is an amazing project, and so far, the outcome is pretty solid. But there are a few issues that don’t seem to appeal for a creature creation game. The lack of texture on the creatures. It makes every one look very mat and generic despite their diverse bodies and ideas. Making more shiny textures, slimy ones, furry or any texture that would spread unevenly across the creature’s body would make them feel much more alive. The patterns as swell, feel and are too geometrical to be a live being’s. Maybe scales, spots, zebra stripes that are not copy pasted patterns could do the trick and feel much more lively :) The maps. Maybe add more diverse tree models to them? The trees look like they have been copy pasted throughout the entire map (which they probably have been) and makes the game much less immersive, making it feel low quality. Adding a few more models of a tree (example: instead of one pine tree model make it three so that the copy pasting is much less obvious), sizing up and down or even just rotating the trees would make it less robotic. The lack of flora diversity. This game has interesting concepts and ideas for maps, but when they are revealed to you, they might seem… a bit empty. Especially the caves and tunnels. That is only because of the lack of details: a huge chunk of glowing rock sprouting out of nowhere with no sign of size diversity anywhere in the tunnels make it seem empty. Adding smaller pieces before the big crystal opening would hint the beginning of a new biome and build up intrigue before the final reveal. Little pieces of moss and fungi across the walls would also be a very nice touch. (I unfortunately do not know if that amount of detail is possible. Perhaps too much detail will slow down game play and favor lag…) It’s a shame that the effort in coding and rendering creatures feels less professional because of rather easy to fix design issues. Don’t get me wrong, it is much easier said than done and I could never get as far as you did. I am an artist, not a game creator. I draw and create landscapes, my opinion and critique is solely based on that experience =v= Adding more organic (and a bit less obvious copy pasting) textures to creatures and maps would make the game even better in my opinion! :D Otherwise keep up the amazing work, I’m sure that it will only get better and better as time goes by :]

And to give more incentive to build a Spore creature irl, you can take a picture of your newly-built creation, import the image into the game, and play it out.

There's so much I can appreciate from this video! I've played the game for myself on android so far, and it's really fun. Tho, I did see some creative limits for those who want to put in more detail while being stopped by complexity and money. Overall, I can't wait to see what's in-store for the future of this game! Plus amazing video btw 11/10! :>

creature evosim sounds really interesting, i’ve had an idea for a spore-like game for ages where you would collect exp for playing and whatever skills you used more you would sort of naturally develop the parts, and whatever skills you use less the parts would atrophy and then become vestigial

I am SO impressed that you have done this. I've played the OG Spore since release and the fact that you have done this off your own back is just amazing! The level of learning to produce this is far beyond me, these days. The level of 'problem solving' alone just goes to show your dedication. Well done, doesn't seem to cover it.

Well this is more like Spore Hero 2. This game seems to have a smaller storyline involving getting vengeance on the humans. Spore Hero had a smaller storyline about saving a planet from a malevolent counterpart of yours. Spore 2 is Elysian Eclipse because it seems to go through all the stages of the Spore game and then some. Though Creature Creator will likely have a lot of spin-off games based on itself.

It's as open as GTA etc... the game can be approached non linearly with near complete control of where you go and what you do when you choose to, that's open world in most books.

You really didn't make Spore 2, quite the bait. A successor should have all of what the previous game had and then some. Creature creator is good, but it's far from being Spore 2, more of a spinoff really. The fallout 76 to your fallout 4? kinda

As a dude trying to make a game myself... man this is a ride to watch. I'm happy to see just how much work you put into it, but also how level headed you are with your own game. I've seen just a few too many who think that just because the put a lot of time into their work that it is the best thing ever. (That said you did wonders with your game don't ever think you hadn't) To see you're seeing how you could do things better, learning from those mistakes, and aiming just a bit higher? I wish you the world of luck.

Rather pretentious to claim its the spiritual successor to spore when your version completely misses that the whole point of the game and all its hype was not creature phase, but raising and evolving a creature from cell to space god. That said, pretty damn impressive to do all this as one person.

About 5:45 Just so anyone learning programming here knows. Having large classes is not a problem. Having a single class that's 5k lines long is not bad in itself, and if you can have 5k lines of code without repeating yourself, and that code exists only in that one class you don't need to sub-divide it into multiple classes. You should mainly separate functions and classes when you need to re-use code, or have a piece of code whose logic is completely different from the sorrounding code (eg: if you have a function that manipulates the skelet to align feet to the ground, and in the middle you need to do collision checks. Separating everything into individual files and classes has its own drawbacks, affecting performance, affecting code legibility, making it harder to optimize the code, and harder to see what actually gets changed, etc.

little tip just in case: something that might help a lot with how the creatures look is adjusting normals! you could technically go crazy with procedural normals to create really cool materials that look like different textures, scales, feathers etc, but I'm not sure if that would fit well with the game. but the biggest improvement would probably be just making the normals of different parts blend into each other, it would fit the art direction while making it look significantly more polished
