I get so much pleasure from watching your videos and I am sure there are lots of other viewers of my vintage (80), who now get their kicks watching you do what we did decades ago. I have 2 questions for you, have you ever dived in Turkey? Lots of the usual suspects, mullet, kingfish, grouper and local species. I spent 2 months there in the 60’s. Also have you considered looking at the history of our great sport, with particular reference to Australia? I started in the 50’s when wet suits were primitive and dreadfully expensive . A still photo of us spearing in football jerseys and woolen rowing shorts would give modern spearos a laugh. Cheers and thanks.

Hi John, glad you enjoy the videos. I’ve never been to Turkey, their national dive team are extremely good. I know a little about the history of spearfishing in Australia but maybe not back to the 50’s. Wally Gibbons was one of the pioneers in Australia and very dominant in competitions for a long time.

So I have a story. Me and my dad were in the Florida Keys in the summer of 2005. I was ~14, and my dad found a huge grouper in a reef about 12 feet deep. First mistake: we were 100 feet or so from the boat. I went to get the speargun and we shot the grouper. However, it got stuck in its hole and my dad was free diving, so he went back up while the grouper was wriggling around in the hole. That was the second mistake. He went back down and it had mostly worked it’s way out of the hole. My dad gave me the speargun and he got it out. As he got the fish out, a 10 foot bull shark comes and swims in the 2 foot space between my dad and the ground, and takes the fish, and starts to swim away. My dad comes up and takes the gun from me so I don’t get dragged away, because the fish was still speared. He yanks the spear from the fish and the shark, and we haul a** back to the boat, because the shark ended up circling back. Sorry for the paragraph 😬

@@kingofkingsalterego8748 They are rare, and some of them are threatened, yes. I am personally not a huge fan of this way of fishing, but I do fish so I can't judge since I'm arguably doing the same, just differently. I can't know what fish I'm going to catch, and the gun divers can't know for sure the size of the fish they are going to shoot. But each of us can with experience know how to fish responsibly and target only grown adult species, now the industrial fisheries can't know either and will lay out long lines with thousands upon thousands of hooks and hundreds of marlin will die like that and I assure you that a lot more than those that show up in the market die by those hooks because fishermen still dump small fish, no matter how high you put the fines for doing it. The only way to go about fishing and hunting is to target species that grown beyond their breeding/spawning age and use every piece of the animal (I personally really do use absolutely every part, I even make stuff out of the fishbones if they are large enough) and not needlesly target threatened species.

@@DanielMann If you are gonna eat them, then I have no issues with it. I don't have an issue with harvesting any fish if you are going to eat it. I have known a few spear fisherman who "wanted the challenge," and that was it. I don't agree with doing that. On releasing, there is at least a potential of survival. Though the amount of time it takes to get these in makes survival less likely. I intentionally avoid bill fishing for that reason. The stress on the fish is so high. I am fully aware that makes me a slight hypocrite as I enjoy fishing and do it regularly.

I was struggling to put on my suit, stressing about loading my speargun, scared to get smashed by a boat. I finally walked right next to the shore threw my big buoy in the water, threw my fins jumped in and then once my fins were perfectly ready to bring me to the big groupers, dentex and seabreams I was dreaming to catch I started to swim toward a good spot I used to dive in. Literally 15m after I started my first fishing journey, the only 10cm² uncovered of my face were completely fucked by a jellyfish I didn't see and had to swim back to my girlfriend who mistook me for a putter fish because of my swollen mouth stung by that fucking ugly little shit.
