@@brucewayne2184 since chess always has an objective best move i'd just say that a player is as good as their accuracy,1200s have that rating bc they dont usually play at 95 but that doesnt mean that they cant play amazing games,its just that the mayority of times they dont so i dont neccesarily think that the only way to determine if someone is good is by comparing them to someone who beat them,i'd say its by how well they actually played,i have no idea if that made sense

I had almost the exact starting position as the first game a few months ago and analysed it. E6 after dxc5 is actually the best move. If white plays b4 trying to keep the pawn then you can play 4... Qf6! The bishop on f4 is hanging and b4 opens the diagonal to the rook. So Qf6 forks the bishop and the rook. Best for white is: 5. Bxb8 Qxa1 6. Bf4 Qxa2 Black is up an exchange.

Just had a game with the London in this same line just 30 minutes after watching this (actually side-lined you looked at, Ne4) - never would have seen I could trap the bishop there with f4 - f5. Easy win - thanks! I had always played e6 rather than Nc6 after dxc5 - (b4 loses to Qf6 hitting both the rook & bishop) but this seems sharper and more fun.

At 24:04 in the exercise I had the idea to go Bf4 to meet Qd4 with Be5. I checked it with Stockfish and it's slightly preferred over Bg5!

At 1:13 I have a doubt. Danya suggested not to play e6 because then white can respond with b4 protecting c5.. But then black actually has a very sound move Qf6. Hitting the bishop at f4 and also attacking the rook at a1.. In analysis too stockfish evaluation drops to 2.6 in the favour of black after b4.. It's essentially a blunder according to stockfish.. So i always like playing e6 in that position to open up by Bishop.. I follow the same vienna tactic here.

I don't think he meant right there they can play it. He did say you can play it but he doesn't. And if you add down the road to him saying they can try to hold on to the pawn it makes more sense. But even if he meant that yeah that would be a blunder on whites end but also knowing computer lines isn't a reason to doubt because I've been caught by those rook things just to win the queen in a few moves. Like for me I know all the book and computer lines for the alapin up to like 15 moves (unless they throw in really weird ones) but it doesn't make me second guess because he usually hits one of the top 3 lines Like in the alapin game he talks about why a move is bad because you're going to get an IQP with a blockade when they take with the knight but in the alapin that happens a lot anyways. And the top move is to take out the knight with your light bishop.

at 11:41 Na4 is not a move that keeps white in the game 'cause the Knight can be trapped again with b5.. even taking en passant won't solve the issue, the a file opens and Q and R create a battery hitting the Knight left with no squares

24:05 bishop to f5 then e5 is even more accurate though. It's not recommended by Stockfish for some reason, but the eval is higher once played. The idea is to protect against the black queen getting to d6 and d4. Black basically has to give up the queen to prevent checkmate.

The person in chat who said 10.Ba3 is the best move in the Italian/Greco Attack line is actually correct here and Daniel was wrong (a rare occasion where his theory isn't 100%!). In the classic line shown in the video Black should respond with 10...d5 instead of capturing the poisoned rook on a1 (earning a crucial tempo with which to castle). Of course White is still better but it's only +1.13 at depth 32 according to SF. The line I have even continues with Black almost equalising a few moves later (+0.3 ish) with (what I believe to be) best play. However after 10.Ba3 (the "Aitken Variation" apparently) Black still must find the same only move (d5) to stay in the game but the engine says +3.07 (and climbing) at depth 32. In the line I have Black actually captures the rook a few moves later but is still completely losing. Just a small addendum for anyone watching. I'd prefer not to parrot engine evaluations but it's easiest for the sake of a youtube comment typing on mobile. I encourage you to check it out with an engine and opening book if you're interested as the original is one of the old school classic lines. However you're not going to see it in high level play (probably why Daniel didn't remember Ba3 was best and chose not to mention there's a better response to the pawn sac trap) because 8...Nxc3 is actually a mistake in the first place (or, specifically, it's the second capture, 9...Bxc3, that is the error but nobody plays one without the other). If, instead of 8...Nxc3, Black captures with the bishop first they can gain complete equality - and perhaps even an advantage - by going down a line that occurs in over 300 top level games (2200 elo and above) in the database I'm using: 8...Bxc3 9.d5 Bf6 10.Re1 Ne7 11.Rxe4 d6 12.Bg5 Bxg5 13.Nxg5 ...and Black either castles with complete equality or plays 13...h6 to try for an advantage (after Nxg5 White only wins 22% of the time with Black winning 51% out of 251 games!).

Another example of a game (the first one) where the opening doesn’t really matter at this level. People should just work on basic tactics and defending a position properly. At this level it doesn’t really help to memorize opening lines, maybe you will survive for a couple more moves. I love this series, but I sometimes wonder about the educational value of seeing a GM crushing a noob.

I think the chessbrah videos are better for people at this rating because he plays bad moves sometimes but he follows basic plans and the ideas are clear. You are pretty much correct. Around 1200 you don't need to do anything other than tactics. There is value in seeing a GM crush a noob. But tactics probably overshadow everything else at this range. Tactics > Basic Endgames > Healthy Positional Play > More complex Endgames > Opening. Seeing danya play an entire game definitely helps, but if I was a 1200 once again, I would just do tactics.

In the first game, after 6 Na4 White is not still in the game due to the response .... b5 7 cb ab 8 b3 b5 9 Nb2 and Black has several winning ideas like ... bc or... Qxc3+ 10 Qd2 Bb4. I was very suspicious when Danya listened to the chat and said that 6 Na4 was more or less holding for White and paused the video and quickly concluded that Black was winning. I then checked with an engine that confirmed my suspicions and showed several other winning ideas that I missed when I paused the video.

He called me out completely on not seeing the problem of giving up a bishop pair because there is no immediate way for the opponent to exploit the square complex. I week or so ago I watched Stjepan from hanging pawns video where he analizes a game in which he gave up his light square bishop in the London and he kept saying that doing so was a problem because of the light squares. I saw no immediate way for his opponent to exploit the light squares so I was like who cares. Later in the game it became obvious to me that light squares are a big problem, but for so many moves I was like so what, I don't see what is his opponent going to do about it.
