It makes sense why this was such a blow to fulgrims pride, think about it. Rylanor was trapped in deep beneath Istvann III surface and had lain their for Man Emperor knows how long, hasn't seen or talked to another sentient being. Probably went insane a couple of times before finally leveling his head, then when he finally gets to take his revenge against the monster wearing his fathers skin like a suit he was able to convince 3 traitors to return to the Man Emperors light with out even trying And fulgrim is supposed to be the most charismatic person in the galaxy second only to the Emperor.

That is not what happened. Rylanor's Stand inspired the Thousand Sons Marines present, but it in no way Redeemed them. They were still Traitor through & through. That's why people love the story, someone who was SO Loyal and proud to be Loyal that Traitor's remembered what that was like for themselves and to some degree very much wish they could again be so themselves. They allowed Rylanor to take his best shot at a Primarch, knowing it would kill them also.

He convinced them that they'd rather die trying, just to deny Fulgrim's glory. And imagine the damage to his pride, that these Thousand Sons think a ball of wet meat ripped out of a metal box on a dead world is more honorable and has more greatness in his core than a demon primarch.

Fulgrim is obsessed with telling and retelling the stories of his glory. If he wishes to portray his life perfectly in theater, then he will have to relive that denial forever. The other option is to omit that detail, but that would leave Fulgrim’s story incomplete and therefore imperfect. It’s literally impossible for him to forget rylanor’s defiance, and therefore it is as serious as wound as a stab to the gut for Fulgrim. Fuckin bastard deserves it tho lol

Part of what makes this scene is the thousand sons. They are spiteful, resentful bastards. But to think that even then, they can see the utter depravity of Fulgrim and say "ya know what, fuck all of us."

Rylanor ironically is what the emperor's children should be like in exuding pure charisma with steadfast ideals. Fulgrim and his band of degenerates have none of the nobility they once had. You see it with Saul too, man took up leadership and managed to turn a massacre into a genuine fight through pure charisma.

He was one of his first sons, he witnessed how Fulgrim once was, a noble if prideful man who EARNED his legion the name of the emperors children, a man the Ancient of Rites had thought he would die for, both in the service of the great emperor of mankind...that was what he had thought until he had been betrayed and now he sees his genefather literally almost unrecognizable if not for his voice, all those loyalist battle brothers besides him have long since died in the emperors service...all except Ancient Rylanor and in no doubt many a persons mind who reads this, delivered the screaming vengeance of his fallen comrades with a permanent scar upon Fulgrims soul.

He did more damage to Daemon Fulgrim than any amount of normal space marines could despite being dying half insane amputee though. Daemons are ideas and emotions, Fulgrim lives off of pride. Rylanor thoroughly rejecting Fulgrim and calling him out as the monster he is and denying him ever the chance to torture him into saying otherwise damages him on the immaterial level just as the Lion did by denying Angron a real fight by just parrying his attacks.

I mean ngl the scene was absolutely epic, and he was more of defiant, horrified, and utterly disgusted Had the thousand sons not slowed down everything he may well have actually detonated the virus bomb, and while it would not have killed fulgrum, it would have certainly put him on a level rylanor could fight. In any situation, having one of the people you genuinely wanted to have at your side even after 10 thousand years despise you so much they dont even try to do anything except kill you certainly would wound his pride. Perhaps not as much as the thousand sons, but Rylanor would certainly leave a wound on him.

When I first heard the Tale of Rylanor the Ancient of Rites, it immediately became one of my favorite stories in the setting. It is, to me, the prefect encapsulation of Betrayal and Vengance in a single short story. This was very well done. I am definitely going to have to check out more of your videos.

Love the narration! The slow and calm pace adding to the suspension. Rylanor's voice distorted just enough to illustrate his state but not too much to make it hard to hear. Fulgrim's voice so unearthly and dripping with malice. Great job!

Well if the Emperor is right and even a POS like Mortarion can be redemeed then all bets are off, anyone can be brought back that being said and just with the contents of the story you have to consider also that a quick death by the bomb was the best those sorcerers could ever hope to get of that situation, I can't imagine the kind of horror Fulgrim would had inflicted upon them so their choice must also had been influenced to some degree by that and not just a complete denial of Chaos as a whole in their souls and minds.

I think this is one event broke Fulgrim. The idea that he may not be right in his pursuit after all. That Ancient Rylanor stood defiant with such vengeful honor that he managed to make 2 Traitor marines turn on Fulgrim scarred Fulgrim for his entire life. The very idea that his pursuit of perfection may not be correct after all.

Probably my most hot take 40K opinion. But I really think Rylanor is an overhyped character. I would go as far to say that his story is pretty dumb. Dude spent millennia crafting a plan to kill Fulgrim. The plan was immediately thwarted by the Thousand Sons. Then the writing just gives Rylanor plot armor because “oh he’s so noble” so the Thousand Sons just forget being chaos marines for the past 10K years and sacrifice themselves for Rylanor. But Rylanor’s plan doesn’t even work because Fulgrim didn’t die. Yet fans go “oh, but he hurt Fulgrim’s pride so it’s all good” Fuck that, he could have contacted the Imperium, gotten rescued, then spent the last 10,000 years hunting Emperor’s Children down. Instead, he wastes all that time in a cave plotting the dumbest plan ever that immediately failed, and only slightly succeeded because the writers pulled it out of their ass.

It is a valid opinion and interpretation (which actually makes some sense in my humble opinion)… I think the purpose of this part of the lore was to show actually how low Fulgrim has fallen, to the point where even Thousand Sons marines think he does jot deserve to live 😊🤦‍♂️.

This bit of lore is as much about Rylanor as it is Fulgrim's true depths of depravity. Just think of how horrible of a monster Fulgrim is that Traitor Chaos Marines of 10 thousand years think he deserves death. I believe that's what the writer was trying to convey.

I think it's cool. And realistic. Not everything goes according to plan. Not every character has the perfect plan. And to be fair Ryanlor had sent out a distress beacon, hoping Fulgrim would detect it. The Imperium has just as much a chance to detect it as anyone. But it was the Thousand Sons who did first. And the Thousands are traitors. They have no loyalty to Fulgrim or the Imperium. But in a hopeless situation, taking themselves out to potentially hurt or kill Fulgrim was worth the risk in their eyes. Regardless of how it played out, they would've died. Ryanlor getting the last bit of revenge is just a sweet treat in a horrible universe and yet, it has very little impact on the whole narrative.
