Cramming maximum functionality into the smallest possible size is my jam. I've been trying to get my hands on one of these for a long time now and this device has been everything I'd hoped for and more.
I wasn't paid or sponsored to make this video - just given one.
Is $2999 within my budget for a TV? Definitely not. Would I recommend this over a similarly priced TV? For a compact, minimalist, versatile, cinema experience - 100%.

I understand it's a sponsored product, that's why I usually try to avoid these kind of video's for information. Things worth mentioning for people thinking about a UST projector: - The bigger the screen size the less bright it gets, specified lumens often (not mentioned as ANSI as well) are less than advertised - To be even comparable with a TV at the same price point you really need to get an ALR (ambient light reflective) screen, another $1000-1500 extra to add probably more if you really want to go the full 150' Also if having a big rectangular shape in the room is an issue you'd need to have a even more expansive 'hidden' roll screen as well. - Have an option to easily darken the room for the best quality, dark walls making it even better. - Try to avoid keystone, this will decrease imagine quality so it's best to set it up in a fixed position, most TV furniture is not very well prepared for this which could lead having a gap between the furniture and the wall, or have to get a sliding mechanism to set the projector if you want the 100'+ sizes - 'just put in a suitcase and take it with you' I really don't think these kind of projectors are meant for this kind of 'abuse' unless you get a specific suitcase with cut out foam. Also every time you get back home you have to align it again. There are specific models made for this purpose but of course these will have less of an image quality at the same price point. Furthermore if you really think about it, how often are there suitable locations when travelling to display a 100' or bigger screen? And if so what are the chances of it being perfectly smooth wall, because the slightest uneven surface will be very visual with a UST projector, So besides the extra projector suitcase you also have to take an foldable screen with you as well going places. Like I said there is definitely a good user case for these projectors, I myself are still in doubt to go big or go quality that's why I did a little research and came up with these points.

"most TV furniture is not very well prepared for this which could lead having a gap between the furniture and the wall, or have to get a sliding mechanism to set the projector if you want the 100'+ sizes" - Exactly this. The only thing that stops from getting it. It's short - throw but still not short enough, to get 120" that my regular projector has, I need to move the stand significantly away from the wall.

Point 1 is not true (perhaps results vary from the top tier brand vs cheap no-name brands), I can NEVER tell brightness level difference on my 4k laser tv. I have tried pushing it right up against the wall for small picture vs a 120inch, and it's negligible in visibility differences (especially during day time with ambient lights shining into the room). As long as ANSI Lumens is being advertised you won't get ripped off. Point 2 is also redundant as 1st your eyes adjust you don't need the TV's high brightness once you're used to a wall projection. 2nd, most people would be working during the day and watching tv in the afternoon-evening and projector brightness is definitely watchable. ALR is not necessary and a simple decision to go without IF you are prioritising minimalism which OP definitely is. Point 3 valid Point 4 valid Point 5 depends on the occasion, it's worth the transportation and re-setup if like OP doesn't have a fixed ALR screen to re-align. But yes, not damaging the glass lense cover is monumentally important.

So we’re trading the black rectangle with a grey one. It’s really not ideal to watch without a projector screen. I tried it for a month without then again with a screen and it was a night and day difference. There are retractable projectors screens out there that can achieve that sweet minimalist look. Though they’re really very expensive and don’t come in bigger sizes.

You can purchase a rising screen for that. During the "OFF" time it is behind the cabinet. If you start the projector, the screen will raise itself by itself.

So… I guess one of the issues is that you need a properly painted white wall or screen to have a good image. Some of the issues you mentioned that there are with TV’s have kind of been solved with one that I bought recently - the Samsung Frame. It’s a gorgeous minimalist TV and it also is matte. I’m in an apartment now that has huge windows and have had no issues with watching it during the day. Also, when it’s “off”, it displays artwork of your choosing. I guess the only issue is it can’t get bigger or smaller.

@@techknow9237 , yes, the technology is evolving constantly. It is true for both TV’s and projectors. Buying thin TV as Samsung Frame I did not expect good sound quality at all - I was fully prepared to invest in some audio equipment. But it turned to be surprisingly good - I decided to skip sound bar for the setup. Don’t get me wrong - you can get much better sound quality with dedicated speakers for different channels in a purposefully prepared space. But in a living room with large windows, variety of uses and all the design considerations - it is probably not worth the effort. Projectors are great if the space is not too bright (the darker the better) and you need a huge screen (over 80 inches). If the space is dark but you could leave with a smaller diagonal - OLED TVs could generally provide better value. However, the particular room is very bright and LCD panel at this size should be better solution. All projectors capable of producing similar picture quality and brightness are much more expensive.

I complain agree with you on short throw projectors being a designer’s dream. Once my TV finally died last year, my wife and I finally agreed it was time to replace it with a projector. We do most of our intentional screen time during the evenings so we’re able to have that theater style experience at home. And not having a black rectangle the focal point of the room is wonderful. We opted for a white Optoma projector and it sits on our credenza along side some family photos, vintage cameras, books and record player. One thing I’d like to see from companies is teaming up with Sonos so that I can pair my surround speakers that flank our couch - you just can replicate that in my opinion.

It looks like a great projector. But, you either need to keep the wall bare, or put a huge white permanent screen on it, which I wouldn’t advise in a small space. I think a Samsung Frame tv would equally fix a lot of the issues you’ve discussed. It has an anti reflective Matt screen which appear as art when not in use😊

You still need an ugly screen on your wall if you want to get any where close to quality of a tv. This was a very nice commercial.

After much research on the TV for our living room we ended up with a Samsung Frame. It's the new model so no glare. Everyone is wowed when they walk in the living room and are greeted by 75" painting. ...which changes. Conversely, I have an LG C2 in the office as both a monitor and TV. It's a cave so the OLED is fantastic. I'm sure projectors have a place. Just not in my house.

IMO Samsung’s The Frame is the best compromise because you can trade that Big Black Rectangle for something more akin to an art frame on the wall, and not have to suffer any of the drawbacks of a projector. Even for as good as they have gotten, there’s too many conditions they have to meet to get ideal picture quality.

I overall like your videos very much, but im little bit disappointed by this one. Feels more like a commercial 1. Its just no "TV" like the title suggests; projectors and tvs are two different things and none of them is really better than the other, cause both have their own specific pros and cons 2. TVs have reflections in bright rooms, but projectors due their terrible black levels are waaaay worse there than any tv 3. OLED-BurnIn is no thing anymore; Oled and other display technologies have nothing to do with anti-reflection. Oleds even are more reflective than led, and thats ok, cause their goal is outstanding picture quality and contrast

Daniel, I would be interested to see your opinion around Samsung’s 2022 Frame TV. It has a matte finish to avoid reflections and is bright enough for daytime use as well. It avoids the black rectangle effect by using art mode with a motion sensor so that it’s not on when you’re not in the room. In this video you had to shrink the image down which takes away one of the main advantages of projectors over TVs. To get your money’s worth out of any UST, your really have to pair it up with a UST specific ambient light rejection screen which defeats the purpose of the interior design aspect of using a UST.

Prefacing this by saying I think projectors are SUPER cool. The problem with projectors(other than the cost, heat output, fan noise, and extreme power consumption) is that they preform best in rooms with dark or black walls. And at their worst in rooms with white walls. Reflected light from white walls in the room really degrades the picture quality. And I've heard it's not a problem with laser projectors, but I find the flickering colors when you move your head very distracting. I'd rather pay 1/10th of the price for a better image quality TV and just cover it when not in use, or use a screensaver.
@Shift4g

You can't really beat the size though, and I always minimized how big of difference it could be until I got a projector. I've repeatedly found now that people start caring less about the quality differences of a panel vs projector once they've tasted the increase in immersion.

Spending that much money to have it at the smallest size on a regular white wall means you’re missing out on the quality and size you are paying for. And then you can’t even use the speakers on their own?? I’d be looking for something cheaper. The ALR CLR screen at 120" is really expensive, and to get 120" on an 8 foot wall you need it on low furniture and a good distance from the wall. There are a lot of drawbacks, but buying a 120" TV is not an option. and a normal projector would not work well in my setup.

Trading a black screen for a white screen isn't much of a difference IMO. This UST like all requires a ALR screen or don't waste your money. So how is the screen NOT going to dominate a room? It isn't that's how. In reality a fixed ALR screen is going to be used for this and not a motorized unit although one can do that. In addition the speakers in the projector are not going to replace a good Atmos system as good as I've seen them said to be. I like this and what it can do but in reality you're trading one "eyesore" for another.

I would like to know if 1) you could use it for rear projection (in a public space, to allow people to do stuff in front of it without gettting in the way of any beam 2) would you be able to ruhn a laser TV upside down i.e. project from top to bottom? I have a situation in mind where you normally have a projecter screen above a door way in normal use, but I am wondering about having a programmed tilter for the laser, that would cover all the way from top to the floor, with the usual keystone adjustments. The image might end up as a portait format, which would be ok

wouldn't make more sense for the background to be a projector screen? I can't wait when they make something like this specifically for gaming, 240+hz, low latency etc. Seems like the concept of traditional TV is dying out.

Cool and inevitable but not useful enough for the price. Just don't see the purpose over a normal television. What space is it saving? You can't have anything on the wall anyways. If you have a big enough wall to warrant this you have space for a large TV as well. The only thing it would be good for is if you move frequently. Maybe you are a traveler and need to bring a large TV with you for some reason? Most airbnb will have a sufficient TV and hotels probably won't have the wall space or table set up to use this thing.

I agree, I like my TV it is a 75" 4K HDR Sony Bravia, it is super bright and it only cost me $1000 Canadian. I have a monster sound system and my computer connected to it and besides the speakers everything is hidden behind a nice curtain I can open and close over the screen and amplifier. Way more useable and far less expensive. Oh and it sounds so much better too

Yikes. Stick to architecture. Very little content given for someone to make an educated purchase decision between UST projector and, well frankly, any current TV technology regardless of manufacturer. Moreover, you are clearly underselling the fact that you must have an ALR screen for the Formovie projector to work properly, unless of course you are in a cave, which defeats your whole minimalist premise.

What did I just watch? I thought this was a chanel about minimalism, small intentional living, and architecture...the price along on this thing contradicts most of that. If you are doing small living there is no way in hell that you will have the room to use the full size that the projector jas to offer, so you are most likely stuck with 80". Paying 3k for a 80" display makes no financial sense when you can buy a 70" 4k TV and a cheap sound bar for 1/4 the cost of this thing. And the comments about the glare...like most people work during the day, glare is not really a problem at night. And if you happen to be watching TV during the day, have you heard of blinds and curtains? Pretty handy stuff. At the end of the day, this is a gadget which it's only purpose is entertaining, and it cost more than a used car...it's existence is borderline immoral.

Projectors are hard to align, loud, low contrast, low brightness, the one featured here in particular, is slow response, not true 4k. I mean everything bad he mentions about a tv, this project is worse. Even the space aspect, projector absolutely requires a projector screen to perform adequately. Don’t buy a projector, you will regret it. This man doesn’t know what he is talking about, don’t listen to him.

I see what you mean about the big black square on your wall and I don’t really like that myself, but with a projector, isn’t there just a big empty white wall instead? I feel a tv at least indicate a function to the room and a bare wall looks se incomplete and unsatisfying. I know it’s a preference, but that big empty wall is really the biggest reason why I don’t buy a projector.

Hi. Have this Formovie Theater Projector. Since it does not have Netflix, I connected a Chromecast to the Theater and the FTheater to a receiver. Even by setting audio in the FTheater to ByPass I cannot get Dolby Atmos in the receiver, only PCM 2.0. Have you experienced the same?. Formovie support has not been able to find a solutio yet. Thank you!

Daniel, what could be spectacular would be to make a TV cabinet with a recessed slot (with a sliding closure?) to insert such a projector so it would disappear from view, except when in use where you would just have to slide the closure to project. Maybe this already exists. What do you think about it?
