Will a "road to 8 billion" be a chart for the remainder of the year? Could be a fun one.
@A-ro-28034 күн бұрын
That would be a fun one to watch. I think December is going to be decent business with Moana and Wicked carryover. I think in the end it will get there. I could easily see Moana and Wicked alone getting well above 600 million. Frozen 2 came out a week earlier than Moana 2 and had 420 million by the end of the year. I could see Moana 2 even beating that number and being around 500 million. (Inside out 2 was at 580 by day 36.) It wouldn’t surprise me in the least if Wicked actually pulls audience from Moana and beats it. I could see something like 400 for Wicked by the end of the year and 380 for Moana if Wicked overperforms and Moana underperforms. On the very high end for both I could see these two combining for 900 to a billion by themselves this year. Mufasa and Sonic are going to be a big openings too. I think Gladiator, Red One, and Kraven will underperform, but they will also chip away at the number.
@jred91684 күн бұрын
Moana, Wicked, Gladiator and Sonic will be the heavy lifters in that group. I do think it will hit $8m but I guess we’ll watch.

As someone well-versed in the Hallmark Cinematic Universe, Netflix grabbing some its corner increasingly with Christmas rom-coms is an interesting development. Also always enjoyable this time of year to see Lifetime drop their “My deadly (insert profession or relation)” series of movies for Christmas and a real showdown as Hallmark is partnering with the Kansas City Chiefs and featuring Mama Kelce in one Christmas movie while Lifetime is doing a very inspired by romance of a pop star and football player, just with the names changed to protect the innocent. Dan, an idea for a new chart to compliment the weekly chart at 6:00 - can we have a cumulative week by week chart to show how the current year is tracking vs pre- and post-COVID? This would mimic the cumulative movie charts (3:00) but for the entire box office. I think it's a good complement to the chart at 8:00 and gives a different view which shows the year's momentum.

I don't think anyone ever did. I'd kill for a high quality remake of Lion King 2 but why would I want to watch this when it was the live action bit I didn't like from the first one and I'm not interested in a Mufasa who isn't James Earl Jones? And more widely I feel like it's true... Did people who loved Joker want a musical Joker 2? Are there really enough Gladiator fans who want a sequel, given all the Furiosa or Independence Day 2 type films that barely scraped break-even. But on the flip side, if it's the best kids film of the season it will make tons of money, and Top Gun 2 was a ludicrous concept that paid off huge money because it was great but really would not have succeeded if it was inconsistent with the original or Tom Cruise wasn't in it or it was even a generic Michael Bay style blockbuster. Wicked will do well even if it's not a billion dollar movie, but its sequel, Mufasa, Gladiator, Nosferatu, Rohirrim, Kraven, and even Red One, who's actually asking for them..? lol

I was wondering what happened to the film Flight Risk with Mark Whalberg and Michelle Dockery which was getting heavily marketed this summer. Its trailer was attached to almost everything I saw. All the posters says October 18th but it seems Variety posted an article just after labour day that Lionsgate decided to push the release. I wonder what the story is there, seems unusual to push a movie like that when the marketing is already underway and it's not set to be a big hitter anyway.

Great video as always Dan! Though I am pretty optimistic about what's coming up at Thanksgiving and in December, I do find it pretty depressing that if it really weren't for the utter collapse of Joker: Folie à Deux, we would've not only had a pretty good October, but it would've made the chances of 2024 catching 2023's $9B gross more likely. If the box office were able to do that, then that would damn impressive as well as encouraging, but when you have a movie like Joker 2 that was at one point expected to open to over $100M and makes barely half of that domestically in its entire run, that's a lot of money lost that most likely won't be made back. If nothing else, Joker 2 shows the massive danger of relying/expecting the big tentpole to perform well. Sure, it's a big relief when it does, but when it doesn't, the consequences are dire and even more so than the strike affected slate, that movie bombing as badly as it did pretty much ended any chances of 2024 catching up to 2023. Anyways, I sincerely hope that everything from Red One to Nosferatu, A Complete Unknown, and The Fire Inside can perform well and at least end the year off strongly.
