I read an interview with Justin Chancellor (bass player) talking about songwriting in Tool. He said that Adam and himself work separately and each come up with their own riffs. A lot of the time, Adam will here Justin's bass riffs and say "hey, let's swap riffs, you play this guitar riff I've come up with on bass and I'll play that bass riff on guitar that you've come up with". Justin said in the interview that it can a bit of a bruise to his own ego when Adam says this because he feels the bass riffs his and he's worked a long time on it, but usually relents in the end because he trusts Adam and more often than not, swapping riffs around fits in the context of the song they are working on. I found that a really interesting way of approaching the song writing aspect of the songs

I don't think there are many bands that can be as open and trusting as these guys are with each other. They have set their ego's aside for the music and have created a sound that is unique to them. Most bands, especially lead singers, care more about their ego and making money than they do making truly amazing music.

Hi David, There’s only 4 reactions left on this album, the patient, parabol and parabola (should be done as 1 song but do parabola if you think both would be too long), ticks & leeches, then disposition/reflection/triad it’s one song in 3 parts often referred to as the holy trinity, please try to do it as one (21 minutes) reaction. Parabol is a soft gentle buildup to parabola so you only miss a bit of the feel of the song but disposition/reflection/triad are 3 distinct movements and you would miss out on the overall experience doing these individually. Plus I’m pretty sure Pneuma is written in 33/8 with multiple ways of making the 33/8 being used.

great reaction. One of my favorite Tool songs. Appreciate the insight as always. You saying "its not difficult, but I would never have come up with that in a million years" is a strong contrast to smug musicians saying "its easy to play, its not that complex of a song" Its like they forget the difference between writing a good song and just knowing how to play it. (sorry guess i was triggered there lol)

What an epic meltdown on their time signatures. Seriously, I love seeing it. Dave, this is kind of a dig, but meant in a good way. The fact that you and so many others are so perplexed by their time signatures shows how much deeper they are than the majority of people as well as most in the industry. TOOL is not for everyone, but I think that is because most people want simple easy stuff and don't have the depth to experience it. Please keep it coming.

Present TOOL is Progressive Rocks gift. This is an ALBUM ORIENTED BAND and the Artwork and engineering is at the highest level. People miss out on the ALBUM experience. Excellent break down, Tool takes a long time to release music, I think they start with no time signatures in mind at all , one of them just starts playing till they get the vibe or groove they really like and presenting it to the others then they all add in elements that fit that groove. And then they polish and find the signatures that logically completes the song. Its why it takes so long.. I dunno just a pure layman guess. Nonetheless they are amazing, one of the best bands ever imo... Always fun watching you react to tool. But if I were you, as much of a backlog you have.. and want to listen to that album do it ! 🤘✌

They tend to write the riffs first just messing around...not doing what most bands usually do, which is as you know try to fit everything to 4/4, but instead let the timing of the root riff ideas be random...Danny comes up with something angular to the riff and sorta frames the groupings and wala! therein lies the secret magic formula!

21:09 - I could see Adam and Danny having their own Pythagorean school where they're drawing geometric figures in the sand with a stick and trying to figure out whether the Neoplatonist source of all that is is more present in a 21/8 or an 27/8. They probably do it to mess with themselves though and since they're veteran musicians it hits anyone else that much harder.

5/8 - 7/8 really is 12/8 "They split it, and made it sound far more complex than it really is." Could it possibly have anything to do with the title and lyrics of the song? I am not a rythm genious, but so happy you explained this in this exact way. IMO theres a corelation there. As schism means a split or divide, and the lyrics are about an argument between lovers, wich often is made more complex than it needs to be. You know the pieces fit, but you still want to argue before coming to an understanding! Im curious now if there is any point in the song or album where the rythm isnt split :P

Dave, I think you should do a compilation video… showing songs from every whole number rating… would be interesting.

@davidheretic - As far as the time signatures go, the whole band embraces 'mixing it up' but I truly believe Danny Carey is to blame. Dude is flat out nuts in the best way possible. Absolute unit of a Drummer that the entire band plays off of. MJK deserves TONS of credit for being able to write such intense lyrics and fit them around all the time changes. Really each of them, Adam and Justin too. Band is best ever.

Man never feel bad about taking up time figuring it out on your instruments, it was really cool to watch. I picked up a bass not too long ago and it’s been so much fun trying to learn so I was in awe watching you figure it out so fast. As much as I want to watch you react to all the songs on the album in their proper groupings, I think I’d rather you listen to the whole album yourself on your own time when you’re in the right mood for it and play it all the way through without stopping at all. Then do a synopsis video afterwards once you gather all your remarks and tell us what you thought. I’m not really fond of the broken up choppy album listens and I don’t think anyone wants to watch a full album reaction in real time, so just an idea. Because this album definitely needs a front to back undivided attention listen to really appreciate why so many people say it’s their peak.

David, if you were to do a reaction to the entire album, that would be great to watch, but I'd be a little worried about you. Afraid that you'd end up losing your mind and end in in a sanitarium you know just sitting in a corner repeating three words over and over: "Damn it, Tool!". But he'll would be a great idea for a reaction . Stay safe

I play guitar, but I started with bass. I love a good groove, and Justin Chancellor knows how to groove! Watching you try to find the notes and use your ear and theory to figure out that riff...damn man, nice work 🤘I picked up my guitar and played it along with you. 😃🎸🎶 subscribed. Also, the best TooL album for me personally is 10,000 Days. They don't have a bad album in my mind but that album deserves some attention. Jambi, The Pot, Lost Keys + Rosetta Stoned, Vicarious etc.

Regarding "do they do this to mess with their fans' minds?" I expect the answer is a resounding "no." They write what they want. The way most TOOL songs start these days, per Danny, is with Danny and Justin (bass) just jamming. They specifically don't stop to transcribe rhythm until they have something that sounds cool. Then Adam comes in and they write and tweak and re-write and re-tweak until it's perfect in their minds. They they send it to Maynard and he adds his vocal melodies and finally lyrics which are informed by the sound of the music. Obviously sometimes they have an intention of having two contrasting numbers resolve, e.g. the polymeter vocals against drums and guitars at end of Third Eye, or the drums against guitar in the intro and outro of 7empest. Those seem to be the exception, not the rule.
