In the 1970s we would watch weekend television as a family and Danny would crop up , always wearing a gown ( never a dress ) and looking fabulous and no one would bat an eyelid . Children never felt threatened by this man in gown.

I named my daughter. Kelly. When she grew up she took mum to see Danny at the Leeds City Variety. Where else! He fit the place perfectly 🥰

I live in Bristol and I so now wish I'd gone to see that Pantomime. It saved the theatre. The management had announced that the place cost a fortune to maintain but it wasn't bringing in profit so reluctantly they were going to sell it. Well there was public uproar and outrage, petitions and questions in Parliament. So Mr Danny La Rue announced that he would be staging the Christmas Pantomime there and not only,as he said, was the run extended several times but it made so much money it did literally save the theatre and we have our magnificent Hippodrome Theatre to this day. I was in my 20s at the time and regarded pantomimes as frippery shows for kids and only "serious" things mattered,a silly view I grew out of I'm glad to say.

He had class. He was courteous, charming and intelligent. That's three attributes most of the drag acts I see on tv,but only on those annoying trails or ads, totally lack. He wasn't trying to BE a woman he was "portraying " a woman but not some slaggy old slut with a potty mouth, the woman he portrayed was a lady of grace and charm and warm heart so the bits of naughtiness came over even better and funnier.

Ru Paul thinks he invented drag but Danny la Rue was more elegant and a much better performer.

I hate RuPaul, my favourite drag Queen is lily savage (Paul O’Grady)

Back when drag was funny and harmless. Instead of toxic and scary.

Drag isn’t toxic it’s LOST what it’s supposed to be as of now many are so OTT and a lot are so off putting especially American ones

It’s not toxic, Right Wingers keep whinging about it.

Loved watching Danny La Rue as a young boy. I would love to try and copy his make up and dreamt of him being my uncle who would help me cross dress and allow me to wear his frocks.
