While Columbus Crew supporters were fighting to keep their team in Columbus, Austin and owner Anthony Precourt achieved villain status in MLS. But now that the Crew are saved and Austin are getting an expansion team, are we still looking at them as the enemy? Should Austin FC embrace the role as antagonist?

The thing is: relegation/promotion can create rivalries. Imagine you're an Inter Miami fan. In the last match, you'll face Orlando City away. Orlando desperately needs a win in order to stay in the MLS. The stadium is packed. Orlando fans doing their best to push the players forward. And then... Inter wins, the stadium suddenly goes dead silent. Orlando gets relegated. These types of matches are the ones feeding real rivalries. Promotion/relegation is a huge part of rivalries. Making fun of your rival for a relegation, getting promoted and seeing your rival stay in the 2nd tier. It's fantastic.

Rivalry is not just about matches and playoffs. That's what you americans are not understanding about legit rivalries around the world.If you want great rivalries, you gotta have promotion/relegation. the best example I can give you is the Belo Horizonte Derby here in Brazil, between Cruzeiro x Atlético-MG. Cruzeiro, last year, was relegated for the first time in its history. Atlético-MG fans raised a mosaic written "I will celebrate your suffering" in a match this year. Another fan rented a helicopter and painted a letter "B" in it, as an alusion to the série B, our second division.

Remember, one of the first things Precourt did after buying the Crew was take their games off local television and Fox Sports Ohio, and put them on Time Warner Sports, a channel more than 50% of central Ohio could not get. Then, when media coverage and attendance went down, he had the perfect reason to start looking for another market. Yeah, screw him.

Great video! I was so stoked when Columbus got to keep their club. I know how it feels to lose your team because the Earthquakes were ripped from us. We had 2 MLS Cups under our belt and that very same squad went on to win 2 more Cups in Houston making it even harder on us in SJ. YOU'RE WELCOME HOUSTON. If it wasn't for the San Jose Earthquakes team with our manager Dom Kinnear you'd have zero stars above your crest. That team is the most unrecognized MLS dynasty IMHO. No. I grew up in Minnesota when we lost the North Stars.(And almost the Twins.) Lived in Seattle when the Sonics bolted. And now love in SW Missouri and had a ringside seat for the Rams re-leaving. I'm Italian and I can say that I don't really understand this "American practice" of moving professional teams from a city to another one, fortunately there are few examples like that in Europe, and I think that it's not even so easy to do that because most of football clubs foundation here dates back over a hundred years ago and there is a very strong link between cities and their clubs...I've been following MLS for a long time and yeah I'm so happy for Crew supporters.

A good business move for the MLS would be t0o franchise teams wherever NFL close or move. eg start an Oakland Raiders MLS team (just make the logo slightly different to avoid copyright issues) and tap into a huge and frustrated raiders fanbase in their spiritual home of Oakland.
