I've seen Arlo in concert since 1973 and each is an uplifting experience. The last few years this has been the closing song (or Goodnight Irene!) It warms my heart and gives me hope.

Just found this video 15 minutes ago and this is my new favorite Arlo video to watch. Thanks Arlo for all the years of songs and stories. Let's not call it "retirement", let's just call it,"I'll catch you guys later".

It's nice when the sound is good, isn't it? Voices of Music is known for high quality, if you are into 'classical music'

A wonderful Woody Guthrie song though he didn't write the music. I think Arlo wrote the music for it years after Woody wrote the lyrics. Arlo performs it often in his concerts. I highly recommend you see him live. I would like him to go into the studio though and record both new material and both pop, country, folk and standards. I sure wish a major record company in Nashville would sign him.

The story that goes along with how he came to use Woodie's lyrics is the best part

I've heard him sing this at the end of his shows. Wonderful. I don't know what the green and black means, and I'd like to know if anyone has that info. I was at a recent gathering where his daughter Sarah Lee did this and it was really lovely.

The green and black is the flag that Greenpeace flies.

@@theresaburek1460 OH! Really?! I guess that makes sense. I love playing and singing this song. I have taught it to many, many children in my years as a public school paraeducator. I always say "brown and black" with diversity of the US in mind. Thanks so much for responding.

@Theresa Burek The Greenpeace explanation is a nice thought, but Woodie Guthrie wrote the lyrics a long, long time ago... I'm sure 'way before Greenpeace existed. I don't know what meaning Woodie had in mind, but I always explained it in my own little mind as: "I want to include all the skin colors but I don't have enough syllables so I'll just throw in green and black and that should cover it." ;-)

@@djpffitzgerald118 In the second verse he sings " 'cross hands of every hue.' I sent him a message on Facebook, and hopefully he'll write back within a few days. Arlo wrote the music to the song, I'm not sure if He changed any of Woody's words. T.B.

@@jtixtlan I was a Para from 2001-05. I worked for the Westfield (MA) School Dept. I was in the DLP room. We used to say that 'every day is an adventure!' I miss my kids, and wonder every day and wonder where life took them.
