Hey Dan---I like your videos and watch them often. I have been in the pest control industry for over 25 years and have owned my own pest control business for over 12 years now. My pest control business specializes in using environmentally safe products like botanical oils (Nature-Cide) combined with other natural derived products (Intice 10 insect granular bait) etc. Termite bait stations are really the only environmentally safe option to customers who wish to continue with "Green Options". I do require using chemical treatments in extreme situations including termite liquid treatments for an active infestation, inner wall injections and other hard to install bait station areas when needed and limited. There is a place for using termite bait stations like properties that have Wells, nearby creeks or natural waterways that the label restricts or limits use of a liquid treatment. Liquid treatments can not be applied in areas where a dog or children dig up soil next to a home or treated area, continued landscaping or planting of flowers that humans can contact the treated soil, areas next to a home that may contain a garden or edible plants/herbs, soil around a home that has barriers to prevent the liquid from working properly, slabs that can not be drilled successfully---drilled holes that will not take liquid treatment---causing damage to slabs/tile/brick that customers get upset about....there are many other reasons why a liquid treatment may not work, are restricted to apply per label. Many customer ask for a environmentally, safer options that termite bait stations can provide in the prevention and elimination of termites without killing off other beneficial insects, human and pet contact with treated soil, contaminating the soil and wells on the property. I have also had, in my experience, many questions about liquid treatments...." Will the chemical leach into the water table as we have a well?"...."If you (the pest control business) claim that your initial termite liquid treatment will last for 5 years plus...., then why do you not guarantee the treatment for 5 years plus instead of me (the customer) having to pay a continued Annual Inspection which extends the guarantee?" "If you did the initial termite liquid treatment successfully, why don't you back it with a guarantee for 5 plus years?" I will say my customers using the termite bait stations that I charge $60 per station to install plus the required Annual Inspection & Service in maintaining the bait stations of $30 per station is very appealing when they see me inspect and monitor for termite activity, remount a station if needed, replace any bait needed (Trelona contains active bait killing termites 24/7) for the annual money they are paying. To them, this looks and sounds better than paying someone who claimed that liquid termite treatments are less expensive to apply initially, will last 5 plus years BUT we only guarantee it for 1 year. with an option of you (the customer) paying us for an annual inspection that extends the guarantee that we won't include in the initial treatment plus all we do is look around to make sure the termite treatment we did is working which it should since you made the claim it would last for many years. That sounds like a SCAM to many customers. Just some FYI to think about. Termite Bait Stations do have their place and customer demand so don't rule out the option in using them as a means to treat for termites besides just liquid treatments.

I live in Ohio. I nearly got scam by my pest control company that I was with for about 4 years. They wanted to charge me $1500 to install the Sentricon bait stations around my 1250sqft home. This was a "discounted" price also since I was already a customer. Plus $60 per month for 2 years for the warranty ( He did not mentioned this. I just happened to have read it.). They used several scare tactics to get me to sign. Such as "the house down the street needed $30K in termite damage repair". I ended up signing but after thinking about it overnight and doing a little research I canceled the contract the next day ( had a 3 day cancel window). In fact I completely canceled all my pest services from them. I ended up DIYing it with trenching and using a 78oz bottle of Taurus SC for $100. I am 100% compliant with state laws. I talk to my Ag inspector every week! :) you know Termidor and Taurus have the exact same active ingredient??
@freespirit19754 ай бұрын
@@DanTheBugMan I don't think they have the EXACT same ingredient, but it is close enough that Bayer sued Control Solutions but didn't win the lawsuit. The reason I say this is that 16 years ago, that large company that starts with a "T" trenched my house for termites and I helped the tech. The contract I signed said "Termidor SC". That solution had a sweet, kind of pleasant odor (this is also how it is described on the MSDS for Taurus SC). That solution killed two active termite infestations on my house. It was so non-repellent that the termites brought the mud we treated inside the wall for tube construction and two days later I started smelling the chemical in the bedroom. Two days later the smell went away and they were dead. This past month my son and I finished trenching my house again as a preventative treatment since it had been 16 years and I was sure the chemical was now defunct. So instead of paying the T company over $400 a year again to maintain the contract for a tech to walk around my house once a year and stare at the clouds and ANYTHING else besides look at the ground at the base of my brick fascia where they should (I watched them and complained and they still did a worthless job), I purchased Termidor SC for about the same cost and we did it all ourselves. Here's the thing, the Termidor SC HAS NO ODOR, and it is actually described as "odorless" on the MSDS for Termidor SC. Therefore, I think the "T" company charged me for Termidor SC and gave me cheaper Taurus SC based on the fact that it had that odor. Again, I will say that the Taurus worked so it is an effective chemical. I believe that Taurus and Termidor are SO close to being the same chemical that they may both work equally well, which is probably why the lawsuit happened. I took Organic Chemistry in college and my theory is that Taurus is what chemists call a "stereoisomer" of Termidor. A stereoisomer is the exact same chemical structure but it is a mirror image and can work the same way. Stereoisomers CAN have some unique qualities that its mirror image doesn't have, for example an odor that the other doesn't have. As matter of fact many of the chemicals being sold as generic Viagra are probably mirror image stereoisomers. Finally, I still have bait stations (empty, without bait or wood) around my house from 16 years ago. At that time, I killed an infestation outside another bedroom, but on the other side of my house they were inside the wall of my kitchen BEFORE they finally hit one of my bait stations, and I had even put them FIVE feet apart, twice the 10 foot frequency recommended. So, I don't trust bait stations. I panicked then and called the T company. Trenching and flooding is the way to go, but professional companies don't want to do it anymore because it is BACKBREAKING work hand digging with a mattock and you can't get a powered trencher beside a house's exterior wall. Also, we DIY'rs can NOT get our hands on the injection tool (proprietary?) used for Termidor's new HE version. But, I'm not sure it would be effectively injected in heavy prairie clay like I have anyway.

They also treated around my front door patio too. But then they install the Sentricon bait stations. Initial cost was just $830 for the liquid treatment and bait stations. Once a year they will come to check the termite bait stations and charge $330 each time. Each time they didn't replace the bait with new one and didn't find any termite activity. I became skeptical this year on how effective are they checking for termites. They don't go into my basement to check or poke around. They only check the bait stations. you really don't know what your talking about, yes a soil treatment BY far is the best treatment, BUT even if a soil treatment is done 100% correctly it still does NOT 100% protect the home, Bait station are a 2nd line of defense, when a soil treatment is done even using the best product on the market at the highest rate lets say Termidor H.E. or Fuse they break down over time and if your lucky you can only treat about 10% of the home, because THE BEST TREATMENT FOR SUBS IS A PRE-TREATMENT, yes the soil treatment takes care of the current problem most times but still not 100% all the time NOTHING is 100%, but for subterrain termites On average, there could be as many as 13 to 14 termite colonies, one million in each colony, per acre of land.....and there is only 1 colony attacking the structure at that time, so when a home owner owns a home that worth hundreds of thousands of dollars and home owner insurance does not cover termite treatments or damage, most home owner what there investment protected, so by you saying it's scam can't be further from the truth, Like you even said Termite are foraging all the time looking for new food, as I type this in my home there are termite under my home and all around my home and I have been doing pest and termite service since I was 14 years old over 45 years, and have done many thousands of termite treatments, I have treated 2 homes next to each other at the same time using the same product applied at the same rate and 1 home will get hit many more times then the home next door, so once again, for most people there home is there #1 investment and they what all the protection they can get, for you to say bait stations don't work is so far from the truth and your mis-guiding your clients, bait station are only 2nd line of defense, and when they are done correctly and monitored correctly they are a great tool to even further the protection on a customers homes, But the most important part is the customer feels at ease in there home, and that is what your job is to do as a professional is to educate the the ways of protecting there home and letting them know the pro's and con's and let them make that choice, because I will guarantee your not treating every home 100% every time by the book, no company is, and not on purpose is just human error....most people don't know anything about termites all they do know is they DO NOT WANT THEM IN THERE HOME LET ALONE DAMAGING THERE HOME.....Do yourself a favor and listen to the client and fulfill there need so they will put at ease, you should also be doing yearly inspection for them if you really care about your clients, and a 6 to 8 week follow-up inspection after the initial treatment...... and you telling people have there home treated with Taurus that's a generic product cheap, you telling them not to worry about for 10 years are you kidding there are so many factors that play into each and every home, so if a pre-treatment is dome on a home before the foundation is poured and THAT IS THE BEST TREATMENT EVER, WHY DO COMPANIES ONLY GIVE A 3 TO 5 YEAR WARRENTY, you know why because the state requires them to because in not they would only give a 1 year, and do you know how many new homes get termite in the 1st 5 years after the pre-treatment 10 of thousands, so if sciences can't say for sure what works best, do you DAN-THE-BUG-MAN really think you know, do have superman eyes where you see all entry points and cracks under flooring where termites can enter remember termite only need 1/64 on a inch to make there way into a home and do thousands of dollars in damage before detected....termites cause billions of dollars worth of damage in the United States annually. While they primarily feed on wood, they can also damage books, insulation, and even swimming pool liners and filters.

When I mentioned we have an encapsulated crawl space, they said I had to do the bait stations or we would not be warrantied. There was a big push to sign up which made me hit the brakes. Is this true? Is there something about having an encapsulated crawl space that changes things? My husband checks that space routinely. Also, is an annual inspection really needed every year ($155! to walk around). We are in the Charlotte NC area.

Taurus SC which a cheaper knockoff of Termidor SC after BASF’s patent expired. It works pretty good for termites and ant control like Termidor. Both of which utilize the active ingredient of Fipronil. For subterranean termites I wouldn’t use anything else, not even premise, which utilizes the neonicotinoid (synthetic nicotine) and breaks down in the soil far quicker then Fipronil. As for drywoods it’s always best to tarp the property. That will zap the termites colonies the inspectors detected along with the ones not detected. Local treatment for drywoods is a roll of the dice.

Your 6 years in the pest management industry means you still have a great deal to learn. Hey Dan great video. I agree with the baiting system not being very effective. However; treating live activity with an above ground bait is 100% the best way to eliminate a termite colony. The reason we use baits is because under a liquid only contract, we are not allowed to treat via above ground baiting- per our department of agriculture. In our state, proper protocol should be Liquid + Bait preventative treatment.

The baits I check get checked twice a year and we video our inspections so that we know the tech is actually checking a property correctly.

There are issues with both liquid and bait but in coastal areas, bait is better just due to sandy soil and heavy storms and rain that degrade the liquid treatment at a much faster pace. No pest company and 100% guarantee that their liquid treatment will create a full barrier around the home due to obstructions in the soil from rocks and things of that nature. I've been in the industry for 11 years now and I think the Sentricon stations have been amazing including with Formosan termites the reason companies normally spray first is because it normally has a faster kill time because the termites are already on the home but I've also seen Sentricon AGs work amazing as well (with a little power-aid)
