If anyone wants to do this but does not have access to a router, you can cut smaller boards and attach on the inside to form a lip to hold glass.

I failed at this task a couple years ago because I was planning on using two 27×40 plexiglass sheets to sandwich the poster. Unfortunately each sheet was more than $30 alone, and it completely shattered my budget. But then I saw some people using SnapFrame posters, so I tried again.I used 1×3 poplar and a $45 Snap Frame. I cut a groove in the poplar for a 3/16" luan back and miter cut the edges for cleaner look. I also painted the inside white for better light diffusion and then cut up 2 of those 2'×4' florescent light panels (like those used in schools, but I used the thinner ones that were more opaque and much thinner than the thicker, bumpier ones normally used) to sandwich the poster between the light panels (the snap frame is 27×40 so just 1 panel at 24" wide won't be enough) and the clear plastic that came with the snap frame. I also used LED lights that were ONLY white instead of RGB (they're about the same price at $10) and they came with 600 lights instead of 300, so it improves brightness. In fact, those light panels were so effective at diffusing the light that I think I could use 1×2 poplar to make the whole thing even slimmer.I hope this isn't coming across wrong; I was just happy to finally finish my project and wanted to share a little about what I found out the hard way.

I had something similar when I was 14 in the early 80s with a old Conti Board chest of drawers with perspex on the top and a normal lamp inside and it used to make my bedroom look futuristic on a night it is the same with telescopic ladders I designed them when I was 9 but nobody believes me . I remember showing my Grandad because I got the idea of his telescopic aerial on his car and he just laughed 25 years later you can now buy them . And now I tell people in 2020 that I thought of this back in 1979 they don't believe me . I bet there's loads of people out there with similar stories but can't prove it 30 years later

Instead of using foil tape or gluing tinfoil inside the box, try painting the inside flat white - it will give a more even reflective base and also reflect more light than the foil.
@danthemakerman8 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching and for the tip.
@DawgcityClev8 жыл бұрын
Flat White? How would that reflect? That would soak in more light.
@rich10514147 жыл бұрын
White would reflect diffused light, but also more of it unless the foil is highly reflective, which it isn't. That is a double win for white.
@stevenarvizu36025 жыл бұрын
Paa Hawkins did you have any sort of actual knowledge about this before u commented correcting this guy? Like even a little bit? U didn’t think even ‘maybe I should look this up to make sure I’m right’ before u wrote this ?
@williamforsythe58504 жыл бұрын
Sorry Jim, totally wrong on this one. White paint has a maximum reflictivity value of 15% in most of the developed world. Foil can reach 40% easily. An aluminum sheet that has been mirror polished would be close to 95%.
@CharlesNolanArt6 жыл бұрын
I really like your design, and use of the strips, but taking those screws in and out seems like they will become loose rather quickly is there not another way? perhaps a hinge on one side and clasp on the other? I don't know just wondering. I'm about to do this.
@danthemakerman6 жыл бұрын
Charles Nolan you could probably use some clamps. I’ve had this for a couple of years now and it’s still good. I have opened it up one time to add another strip of LEDs because I wanted it brighter. No issues so far

This solved a few problems I was dealing with the light source being visible. I'm using white gloss paint for the background but I dont see the use in using 2 poster boards, wouldn't you only need one for the inside? I'm using plexiglass and would like to have the shininess visible on the outside.

how about putting in a gel-ish medium or some sort of crystalline medium as a light diffuser (as in LCD screens)? that dcould hide the banding visible from the strips and give a more uniform brightness
@danthemakerman8 жыл бұрын
I was trying to keep this a low budget build and I use this for tracing so the banding doesn't bother me. I've also been told that a light diffuser like the kind they have in fluorescent lights fixtures like in office buildings would probably do the trick too if you are after more diffusion.
@pttimothys6 жыл бұрын
actually it easy when you use 2mm white acrylic. and led strip module 5050+ 6000K. just screw it to the wood. and dont need a alumunium foil just use a triplex wood and screw it to box.

@danthemakerman9 жыл бұрын
+Kaylyn Barger I don't know if this would work for a pure white background. The light is diffused but since the LEDs run along in a strip you still get a vertical strip effect. I am not a photographer by any means but I will try to take a few pictures with this light box as the background and post them with a link.

Nice video Dan the Maker Man...! I want to update my 5ft x 3ft lightbox (wood framed as yours and currently powered by fluorescent tubes) to LEDs. I think your method would work very well at large size though I'm a bit worried about the banding. I notice you run the strips closer together nearer the edge and further apart in the middle - what's your rule for this?
@danthemakerman6 жыл бұрын
I didn't really mark the spacing I just eyeballed it, I didn't really have a plan when I made this I just kind of a rough idea of what I wanted to make. I wasn't concerned with banding and it doesn't bother me but if you want to reduce it I think you would need something better than the foam core to act as the diffuser and may want to look in to something that will work better as a diffuser. I'd be curious to see how the LED tubes will look though. Sorry I wasn't more help good luck with your project!

Are you asking about the aluminum tape? If so just google aluminum tape, they sell it places like Home Depot in the Air Conditioning supply section. As far as powering it up, not sure how to help you there. I just plug this in to a standard wall outlet. You might need something that is battery operated. Try searching on Amazon for battery powered LED lights. Good luck!
