I turned up in hull 1991, with a kit bag full of everything I owned, i went to The Grafton to use the phone to get a place to spend the night. I left and came back, left and came back.then I heard a voice ask "are you locked out mate?" I said no I'm homeless." The geezer then picked up the phone and started loading 10p coins into it and phoned all the B&Bs and hotels but then turned and said, 'I've had no luck but if you come back at 8pm me and my girlfriend, will make sure you have somewhere to sleep tonight." That man was Paul Heaton, a truely great human being.

'Everyone has got an opinion on how far you cook a sausage.' Absolutely loved the informality of it all. This country has a terrible habit. And it's got nothing to do with alcohol and drugs. It has to do with turning its back on our national treasures. Especially those who catalogue the times in a tuneful way and crystalize the psyche of a country still hiding behind the living room sofa in case the TV licensing man knocks the door. Hats off to Paul ❤

Wonderful stuff. Can't be many people as successful who have stayed so true to themselves. The Housemartins were one of the reasons I went to Hull University (having grown up not far from where Paul found himself as a kid in Surrey, having also been a bit of a fish out of water - with family roots up north and a lonely allegiance to a northern football club - and also developing a shared obsession with Italian casual labels). By coincidence, I ended up living in his street in Hull, but was aware by then that he had a (probably healthy) disdain for students. Saw him at LA's club in Hull a fair bit, but never had the the bottle to approach him. Still don't think I would now. A genuine hero.

@@adamtaylor1831 yes what a scammer he owes me millions of overdue royalties. Like 35+ years outstanding ! I want my songs recognised ! Can't believe they'd ever reach No 1s, 7 albums later not a penny from him , Cuckoo records, Virgin media, universal music group nothing but heartache by the numbers. Being shy reclusive I chose to employ him in Rotterdam as the secretary not the owner of my company. He and everyone involved are in breech of copyright infringement! Call me what you choose ! I know I am the creator of the beautiful south. They're all my compositions forget believing him. I am the silent ghost behind the group. And have had memory wipeout for the last 35+ years as a result of a fatal RTA I was in. In a&e I can remember that I just wanted to die ! They had to jump start me 7 X , in a coma for 5 days, paralized for 2.5 years, no memory and for the penny to drop in my head realized that the songs on the radio were Are mine ,so where's my share ? After all the heartaches pain and suffering I shouldn't have to work every day. Yesterday I was on a train from Swansea to London and I took out my harmonica and played my songs to myself. When the train arrived in London. The 2 ladies behind me said your harmonica playing was beautiful. Asked why I stopped playing? I said I had brain damage from the car accident I had and couldn't remember the rest of the songs. But that don't make me a retard special needs person.

Christmas 1986. The Housemartins had come off the A1 at Birtley and got lost on the way to a gig at Newcastle University. I got the job of going in a cab to get in their van and guided them in. They were funny in a way that a kid from a pit village who spent his schooldays looking out of windows and getting into trouble for it (you can look out of a window and listen) found very familiar. They were bottom of the bill and blew everyone else away. Paul could really dance. If there is one person I've ever met I wish I could talk to again, it would be him.
