This was very interesting Terri, never seen soap made before, but knew the rough ingredients through my reading material in the past. I also know the process now too, I have heard about the soap root but had no idea what plants provide this, but I have more ideas now too, thank you for sharing.

How Fascinating the Process is...Something that is such an irritant to the skin ends up Soothing it. I made Lavender infused oil after watching your video, I have opened the bottle weeks later expecting it to smell of lavender but it smells sort of musky...is this what happens Terri? I suppose it still has the health properties or has it gone off? Will definately be making some soap...Thank You for video it was lovely 💜☘💜
@DanusIrishHerbGarden
@DanusIrishHerbGarden 4 жыл бұрын
It is a fascinating process for sure. I think if your oil did not smell of Lavender but smells musky it must have gone off. Possibly there was some water content in your Lavender or some water in the jar after cleaning it.. Sometimes the plant material should be left to wilt and sometimes a splash of vodka can prevent bacterial growth. It can be a hit and miss affair, but give it another go. xx

Thank you for demistifying soap making. I've looked into it in the past and got frightened off but you offer something here I feel confident I could make. Clearly not a process to rush, but I shall definitely give it a go. Yet again, Terri, thank you so much. Being able to make my own products does indeed make me feel empowered.

I just wanted to encourage you to make your own soap if you didn't get around to it. My aunt taught me to make soap at her house. It really surprised me how easy it is. My aunt had a coffee shop and decided to learn to make cold process soap to sell at her shop for extra income. She got super creative. Terri didn't mention it, I would add, put together a soap making "kit" which you don't mix with your food cooking pots, moulds, blender, spatulas, lye jug, etc. I put gloves on, and safety goggles on to protect my eyes, and an old long sleeve top, pants, and covered shoes just incase of spills. Have a bottle of vinegar at hand to pour over your skin if you get any lye or soap mixter on your skin. Safety is very important when making soap, because the lye is caustic. I also cover the area I'm working on with a plastic table cloth to protect the surface I'm workung on. I mix my lye next to an open door and put it on a tray that won't burn a surface if there are any splashes. I get everything I need ready, and measure precisely, before starting. Once you start making soap you can't stop. The lye solution must be at the right temperature and the oils. One can't go and take a long phonecall while you are making soap. 😂 The water goes into a glass jug, then you add the lye granules very carefully and stir. The lye will go clear. Water and lye (caustic soda) causes a chemical reaction which generates heat. Meanwhile the oils must melt and be heated to the right temperature. As Terri say's, the oil and lye must be at the same temperature to blend together. Not cold. Having a thermometer is essential. I bought a candy making thermometer. Once you carefully blend the lye and oils, your soap mixture will thicken to trace. If you are not going to use your overn for 24hrs, you can put your moulds with soap mixture in the cold overn, and close the door. It seals it, and the soap mixture can carry on doing it's chemical process. The mixture gets hot because the lye and oils are doing their thing. Eventually it cools down and gets cold. Then the magic happens when you pop the soap out the moulds.. Voila, you just made soap. 😊 I wash everything very well to get all the lye, and soap mixture off the thermometer, bowls, pot, jug, etc. Tip: I went to second hand shops and bought as much as I could. Use stainless steel spoons, and a pot. I buy all my silicone moulds second hand. It saves alot of money. Also because everything I use for soap making is seperate from my cooking utensils. To save money, below are some items I bought at second hand shops, or charity shops to build up my soap making kit: Soap recipes are measured out by weight in grams. It's a precise chemical recipe, so getting everything weighed is important or the soap batch will fail. Scale Silicone moulds Glass jug Mixing bowl or stainless stell pouring pot Stainless steel spoons Spatulas Stick blender Jugs for making different colours of soap when you get fancy I bought second hand rose shaped moulds, hearts, stars, Cute insect moulds like lady bugs, dragonflies and butterflies. Easter bunnies, etc. The sky is the limit. I also have rectangle moulds for the traditional slices. Making your own moulds from recycled milk cartons is also great. I have used those too. I began soap making in South Africa. It took some time to find suppliers for all the ingredients. Soap fragrance or essential oils are expensive and difficult to find in quantity. I don't know about other countries? America seems to have everything, they are great that way. You can shop online in America. But not where I live. Shipping is expensive. I moved to Germany in 2019 and had to start all over. I literally came here with my suitcase. Almost everything I bought over time is second hand. I get to help save the planet too. It is very difficult to buy soap making products in Germany because they are so strict with everything. Coconut oil and olive oil is no problem. But getting alot of fresh lavander is not easy. I haven't tried to grow it where I live as yet. It's very cold in N Germany, we also get harsh cold winds. I love the fresh lavander oil infusion and infusion of the lye water, but I don't have fresh lavander growing so I need the buy essential oil to put into my soap batch. What I'm trying to say is getting everything you need first is important. The actual preperation is easy. Once you have made your own soap, you will be amazed at how easy it is and it's so rewarding. 😁💕 Good luck. Happy soap making. 😊💐

I have been making soap for a few years, and I have found that once the lye has dissolved, I can add the coconut oil and the heat from the lye solution will melt it. Then I add the olive oil. (50/50 olive coconut is my favorite!) For the liquid, I use either salt water or frozen goat milk. I just sprinkle the lye onto the frozen cubes of goat milk to melt them. It doesn't get hot enough to melt the coconut oil that way though. I love the idea of infusing herbs into the oil. I will be doing that in my next batch of soap!

Thank you . will try it and will let u know. today I got the caustic soda. a question is : when you add the caustic soda to the lavender tea the tea is not warm, it is have this steam because of the caustic soda that is added?
@DanusIrishHerbGarden
@DanusIrishHerbGarden 3 жыл бұрын
It doesn't matter if your tea is warm or cold. You might be just using cold rainwater. You are right that the steam you see is due to the chemical reaction with the caustic soda. You check the temperature of the caustic soda or lye, (once it is dissolved) to make sure it has cooled down to 50 degrees.

You should use a wooden spoon with caustic soda Dear

I don't use a wooden spoon because it starts to disintegrate and discolours the water.

Oh lovely Terri ty. I've been making ready pour soaps through lockdown and wanted to try this but was a little scared of the process. You've made it seem very easy so I'll be giving it a try. I've got lots of Lavender to use from the garden so hopefully, if I can be patient enough I'll certainly try this.x

It seems daunting Wendy but if you set aside half an hour where you won't be disturbed and take precautions, you will find it easy. Enjoy the process!

@@DanusIrishHerbGarden I watched a lot of videos and it seemed you needed all sorts of equipment which put me off! This looks very easy to do once you get used to handling the soda I expect? That's the scary bit for me. I can play around with crafts for hours so the time doesn't worry me! It's grand trying out new things isn't it and I think we should all give things a go to try and be more sustainable. I think it's having someone with the knowledge too to explain in an easy way and outline the options we have to encourage more of us to try new things. I've loved lockdown if only for developing new skills, I've been in my element lol. Ty so much Terri, I absolutely love these videos, especially the garden tour ones. Take care.x

Thanks. Fumes are a good reason to take caution. Goggles yes perhaps a mask as well. I’d wear an apron. I notice you use glass bowls etc I guess glass is best mixing caustic soda and stuff vs metal bowls .

Is there a natural alternative to caustic soda? Even to make a liquid soap.
@bee7549

caustic soda is an alkali but just requires safety when using it. It is necessary for soapmaking. Potassium hydroxide is used to make liquid soap

You could if you let it harden for a lot longer. x I leave it for a minimum of 6 weeks but if I wanted it for laundry I would leave it longer just to make sure it doesn't go slimy.

Hi. I enjoyed the presentation but I wish you would give the sprcific amounts of each ingredient based on the system usef in different locations. We use cups, tbps. tsps. ounces, pounds, etc. I have to look for conversions and we dont always have the books for it. Also, where do you buy the ingredients. I havd never madd soaps before but I would like to learn. Not technology driven. Thanks. Blessings.

Dear Terri! Made your nice lavender soap exactly by looking and writing down the ingredients. BUT after 48 hours it was still very soft....! I wanted to scent it with essential oil, so I did. Around 50 drops. My own guess is, that I ruined it adding that. What do you think? All THE best from soap making rookie 👍😁Maria in Sweden
@DanusIrishHerbGarden
@DanusIrishHerbGarden 4 жыл бұрын
Adding essential oils can change the recipe slightly but it your oil was evenly distributed it should be alright. Did you manage to get it out of the moulds? If so, it will be fine. Just let it air dry now and it will slowly harden off. it can take six weeks minimum. xx
