Supreme Video...as a Mexican being born in Merida, Yucatan, it was great seeing those women make tortillas like my grandmother made them, she also wore those colorful dresses and spoke maya herself because she was Mayan...it is very nostalgic to see all of their culture and tradition like the huts where they live...My grandma also lived in one when she was living in the village before she came with her kids to the city of Merida after losing her husband...thanks Dan for exploring some of the Mayan culture.

Thanks, Dan, for an exquisite video. Because of the many gringos-in-Mexico videos I've watched (and learned the truth) about Mexico I'm falling in love with this magnificent country and her people. For years I've read and learned about the Mayans and came to be curious and admire that ancient culture, and personally feel that the Maya go far, far back in human history and played an important part we haven't even begun to truly grasp. But this video has shown that they're still here. It's wonderful that these ancient traditions and language still live. And yet, it's just one of many parts of the history of this fascinating country. Sadly, I guess I'll never be lucky enough to visit...I'm retired and live on a limited income...stuck here in the USA.

Thank you for your words of encouragement, Ricardo. I failed to mention that most of all, it's the beauty, creativity and resourcefulness of the people I admire most. By far, they seem to be living life the way we were intended to live. Oh...and...lol...the Mexican cuisine I fell in love with some time ago. And yes, I have looked into the many expats that moved there. Thank you much for the Google suggestion. I will look into it...!!

tinkmarz1 you can do it! Don't give up! Even if you have to recycle cans, plastic bottles, have yard sales, sell brownies- do it to save up! You'd be surprised how effective this is. I know someone who saved thousands to buy a car by selling candies at school. Another saved for a trip by selling pumpkin rolls. Be creative, set your mind to it, and it will happen. 😎 Best of luck! ✌️

It's really good that you didn't film much in the Mayan village, I hope you inspire more people to take that kind of trip and learn about different ways of life. There are similar tours all over Mexico and we support Indigenous peoples who want to maintain their way of life by paying for these kinds of tours. Happy traveling.

PDC is a touristy unless you walk two blocks off 5th. Then you are with the people that live there. Most tourists dont stray far from resorts and 5th. Miss the best part. Beautiful friendly people. May not speak the best English but that's part of the fun. One of the great and reasonably price restaurants is Choux Choux on 20th. Once took 5 people there for breakfast including coffee drinks and tip $36-$40 US. Eat there 5-6xs over ten days stay..Its just 3 blocks from Mega ( think MX WMart) and a great little market and restaurant find on the corner across the street. Jungle, Myans and Cenotes rock. Nice vid Dan New Travel. Hope you and everyone visiting in S MX are using sunblock. 50SPF +

I loved the Riviera Maya when I was in Mexico - I've spent two weeks there in 2015. Playa del Carmen is way too touristy but still very charming. Haven't been to Coba but I saw Chitchen Itza and it was stunning. Nice, flip flops to climb the pyramids - lol. Glad you made it without slipping ;) I've been in a Cenote as well - this was remarkable, loved it to jump into the cold water, perfect to refresh in the heat.

Coba has changes since I was last there 20+ years ago. Very few tourists would visit it back then because it required you driving down a dirt road for lots of kilometers to access it. Near the entrance some locals would offer you a tour for just a few pesos, mostly young men that you could tell had moved to the area to service the nascent tourist trade. The man I chose to guide us was an older Maya man with a heavy Maya accent when he spoke Spanish. He'd grown up in Coba. He joked how Mexico was doing a big deal about this recent "discovery" when in fact all the locals new the citadel was there but had never been consulted. He ended up taking us off the beaten path off site to see some of the as yet unexcavated & "undiscovered" areas that were not on the guide map but that were still being used by him and the local mayas. What we had planned to be an hour or two tour ended up being a full days excursion with him. We had hit it off, and he was so thrilled that we were so interested in his life and growing up Maya that he shared his childhood story, his customs, religious practices, etc. as we literally clawed our way through the jungle to see parts of Coba only known and inhabited by the Maya there. Truly the best and most unexpected "tour" of an archaeological site that supposedly was abandoned, but in truth was still partially being used. The only down side is they were afraid they would one day be evicted once the extent of the citadel was discovered in order to preserve it as an archaeological site.

Anywhere you see high rise condo/hotels - Cabo San Lucas, Puerto Vallarta, other parts of the Mexican Rivieras ( Pacific and Caribbean you are in tourist land - planes dropping off tourists one after another - incredible number of Canadians during the winter because of their climate and the fact they get longer vacations than the US - in places like this you will know you are in Mexico because you have a visa and those cities will be bilingual but to a large extent you are no being as immersed in Mexican culture the way Mexicans live it. Outside the resort areas and the "Centro" parts of some cities where there are tourists visiting museums or coming off cruise ships you will discover much more to the country. Just about every part is worth visiting - everyone has their own favorite town - everyone seems to tell you a different place is must see. The only parts to avoid are the ones that affected by the drug cartel and there are poorer parts of cities you probably wouldn't have cause to travel to where you might stick out. Mexicans used to tell not to go to Mexico City but I don't hear that anymore - even they were afraid to go there - of course there are pickpockets just like come parts of Europe. Even Mexico though is one country, by its landmass and vast coastline it's practically a sub-continent. It even has its own version of the Grand Canyon - vast areas still semi-wilderness, no smog or sprawling towns and suburbs - I suppose the industrial cities like Monterrey where there's a lot of car factories would not be a primary destination.

I watched a show on PBS years ago how they deciphered the ancient writing system, based on glyphs that were the most complicated thing I could ever imagine. Even though that writing system isn't used anymore and the modern Mayan language uses an alphabet that is easier to learn those Meso and North American languages are unbelievably complicated. During World War II the US used Navajo Indians to speak over the radio to communicate commands to remote forces, knowing that the Germans did not have access to Navajo speakers and wouldn't be able to decipher the messages. Things are different now with Google translate -
