Rugby is a world sport. The main difference between rugby and American football apart from the obvious lack of a suit of armour, is the fact that rugby is non stop action for 80 minutes and American football is action for five or 10 seconds and then a break for a chat or advertising 😊

I played rugby for my school, we were quite highly rated in London (considering ours wasn't a public school, in the south of England it's mainly posh kids that play Rugby) We played in a tournament with a team from Wigan, Swansea and I can't remember the other team (it was over 20 years ago). We lost every match, especially the one against Swansea 😂

I grew up in Virginia playing football, moved to Ireland and started rugby when I was a teenager. No pads and helmets is a good thing, you learn how to take a hit and how to deliver one safely. I still remember watching Faf de Klerk from the Springboks get knocked out in the first 40 seconds of the game, his neck snapped backwards and he was taken off.. He was perfectly fine and is playing today but the anxious moments of waiting for news that he was okay was so nerve wrecking

In the English Super League a guy started a game in the cup final with a broken Jaw and broken cheekbone. He had 6 metal plates in his face and a black eye. I remember another guy who ruptured his testicle in the 35th minute of the first half and didn't tell anyone until he had finished the game. Absolute warriors.

One of the things I always like to stress to Americans is that a lot of tackles in Rugby are done with proper technique, mainly because the lack of protection means you need to have good technique or you're losing teeth, breaking bones etc. The use of pads and helmets in the NFL has actually reduced the technique level of many players tackling, which leads to just throwing your body in like a missile at the guy. This is why the NFL has more concussions in general than most Rugby competitions.

What you dont realise is the size of the players. Lowest weight on the field if theres a unusually small player is probably 12 or 13 stone but most are probably between 15 to 20 stone. Jonah lomu was 19+ stone but could do the 100 in 11 seconds. Granted he was special. Rip Jonah.

Back in the 70s Rugby used to be the main boys sport in UK schools. They suddenly decided it was too dangerous because some boys were seriously injured, but life isn't risk free and if the boys want to play let them. Of course it also stopped boys in general growing up tough and TPTB seem to want weak ineffectual men, I think this was their real motive.

My husband played rugby for his regiment in the British army. He said the adrenaline carried them through. What's more, however aggressive the play, it was always left on the pitch. A hot bath, and then you were all sharing drinks in the bar with the opposition.

I was on a flight just recently that had 2 rugby squads from South Africa on it. They were top flight teams I found out later, on their way to play a few european teams. I didn't realise until I saw them crammed into plane just how massive rugby players are. It was very impressive. Some of them stood around the toilet areas for most of the flight because they just couldn't fit into their seats. Watching normal men trying to squeeze between them on their way to the toilet without looking intimidated had me entertained for the whole flight.

As a French, i can say that in rugby schools for kids (both boys and girls), they don't practice tackles because of danger. But they learn how to fall, how to resist to stay their two legs, how to catch the ball from adversaries, and how to enjoy, because, in reality, it's a team fighting sport. In many places all over Europe, in ancient time (i.e. since medieval age), villages "played" game in witch the goal is to put something (typically a big ball) to the church of the opponents. In France it was called "la soule" and it was extremely dangerous with possible deaths (yes, we started it as some kind of war"). So now, it is a little more civilized but still hard, physical and sometime harmful but honestly the rules are evolving to adresse commotional issues. For example, you can't tackle over the shoulders because of the neck, you can't tackle an opponent who is still on his jump. You have to wait his (her) feet are on the ground, and so on. Really, this sport seems very brutal when played by senior men but try to see feminine rugby. As woman don't have the same size, they must find other tricks to win the game. Personally, i enjoy women's game because it's different and very interesting. Have a good day and happy new year.

As a kid, rugby was my life. I ate, slept, dreamt, lived rugby. It was how I expressed and defined myself. Captained one of my teams to a national championships too. Sadly injury meant I never got to play for my country but friends did and they went on to win world championships. Best team sport in the world. Everything else, is childs play.

My American military colleagues weren't familiar with Rugby but after watching the USA v the All Blacks, it lit a fire in them and they watched every game they could for the rest of the tournament. Rugby is dying in OZ while soccer is killing it. Rugby grounds within the suburbs are empty during the playing season so councils are converting them to soccer fields due to shortage of grounds for that sport. Registered participation for soccer is at 1,450,000 while Rugby is 170,000 and shrinking.

Fun video. Something as well that you don’t see in American football match is the frequent mismatch in sizes. A big defensive linesman will hit a big offensive linesman et cetera, but in rugby a 12 stone centre will often find himself up against an 18 stone forward. In American football it’s usually only just the quarterback that gets smashed by a much bigger guy, and neither will be running at full pace at the time.

When your sat in the crowd hearing the sounds of bodies colliding and sometimes bones breaking, you will have the greatest respect for the talent these men and women have. Used to play Rugby in high school. Ended up having eight stitches inside my lower lip after catching the heal of a boot (cleat) when I slipping forward during a "Ruck" move (looks like players piling on top of each other). I might be wrong, but I'm pretty sure Gridiron doesn't allow grappling during a tackle, anf has to be open handed, so pushing and basic impact to tackle the player. Mostly what would be classed as illegal in Rugby.

I went to a 'rugby' school. We learned how to take a tackle, it's a tough game and incredible fun to play. I still fondly remember the smell of wet grass and mud up me nostrils! Bit like British Bulldog which has been banned in schools but we took the bruises happily cos it was the best fun in the world :)

I went to school in the town of Rugby, this is where the game started at the famous Rugby school. We had to play Rugby at school, normal football (soccer) was not played. Some of us went on to play for clubs and even the country. Rugby football is a world sport and highly popular in the UK, Europe and southern hemisphere countries. The world up is every 4 years and it’s a great tournament of which the USA and Canada compete, however the 6 nations is to. It’s a great game to watch with 80 minutes of real excitement.

Played both Rugby and Rugby League here in NZ from age six up into my early thirties and loved every minute of it with my old rugby team (we were all school mates) we went undefeated including all preseason games for three straight seasons and still hold the record in the club to this very day it’s unbeaten. I Love your take on Rugby I live in the UK about 35 Miles from the Place where it was first play Rugby School. We have two types of rules The Main one you will see on international TV is Rugby Union which is played with 15 people per side the Other Quicker game is Rugby League which originates from the North of England where Rugby Union is played in the South of England and the other 3 nations that make up the United Kingdom. They start from young. Getting knocked and falling (hard) a lot simply makes you tougher and more pain tolerant, learn to take the punches. Even the skin get tougher. It's an amazing sport that is actually a strategic mental game which is coordinated and executed very physically and sometimes relentlessly.

Rugby is one of the best games in the world - free flowing, hard hitting and always exciting. It's very technical but with strict rules too. The closest you have in N America is probably NHL. Some of those hits in the video were questionable if not illegal. What you can't really see is just how big and strong some of those players are. As a former winger (outside flanks) I got injured only once (dislocated shoulder, popped back in by itself) but kept playing since we we re allready a player short ... yes it hurts , but that puts some hair on your chest. In rugby there are actually less serious injuries than in soccer/football because all the 'agression' in controled , and you run the risk of injuring yourself if you are to crazy. I really appreciate your reaction. Yes rugby football is still very much being played the world over by men and by women too. There are two main forms: rugby union and rugby league. I would highly recommend you now take a look at the mighty late great Jonah Lomu, a man mountain of New Zealand rugby union who was a sheer phenomenon of the game. His exploits on the field of rugby union have to be seen to be believed.

I played rugby in school and for the school, I broke my collar bone four times playing this great game. You learn how to take a hit and brush it off and await the next one you have to take. It's a game of hard action with big hits, but it's not often a player has to go off the field for an injury. But the person who has charge of the players is the referee, you don't argue with his/her decision. Yes her as women do referee this game and play it to a reasonable standard internationally. To play the game you only have to be in a school that has it on the roster for sports, or a school like mine where sports was rugby or rugby.

I played school and club rugby in Namibia. Broke 3 ribs, my nose 2 times, cracked my sternum, countless pop eyes and had two operations to remove torn cartilage from both knees. If I could, I would do it again. Loved the sport. Great time sport where discipline can be crucial to a win or loss. The ref should also be treated with respect, you can be sent off for backchat and also get a match ban. The after parties with the opposing team was also legendary.

I played from 14 until I was 51 , apart from a few cuts, broken nose, and dislocations it was a great part of my life, and I wouldn't have changed anything. I was wing forward/flanker for most of my career and I was a tackling coach, i weighed 17 stone 240lbs so I could absorb a lot of impact.

We used the same saying in hong kong in the 90s but said hooligans instead of thugs or ruffians. I once played at the hong kong sevens in 1998 was on finals day in front of 20-25 thousand people. It was the finals of the school competition that was played a few weeks before the sevens tournament. Then one of the new zealand players gave us our medaks, was meant to be jonah lomu but i believe he was ill or injured n didn't make it there. Still Top3 experiences in my life though.

I had a friends brother die in a rugby incident. That's very uncommon. The biggest long term problems seem to come from repeated concussions. People are starting to play with exoskeleton style helmets and even breast plates. But it is our national game so for the players I guess its worth the pain. USA is starting to do well in rugby. Historically NFL has origins in Rugby. It's place in the UK with a very expensive school (Rugby). Check out the women's rugby.

Players do NOT address the ref as sir, unless they are trying to butter him/her up, and then its tongue in cheek. Though you might find it in a school match I suppose. Its not so much discourtesy that will get you in trouble, but anything that challenges the referees` authority in whatever form.

i played for 34 years, up to semi pro level. its an amazing sport, the main reason we put ourselves through it is for our team mates. if you want to see a cross over, Christian Wade made it on to a training squad of an NFL team and ruined a few defenses. he came back to rugby after a while though. there are a good number of teams now in the USA. i cannot recommend going to a smaller team, watching them and then having a few beers with them enough.

My college toured the US in 1976, playing rugby. Went from LA up to Vancouver, played 8 games in 17 days. It was a tough tour, by the time we made it to Vancouver half the team was carrying injuries, but we played anyway.

Not entirely true, but pound for pound the Rugby (League)players rule in one on one tackling...in the NFL, a player of Lomus size is common...and no arms are required in the tackle + gang Bang 3+ tacklers in 1 hit. What North Americans call football was developed from rugby at the colleges and universities of central Canada in the 1860s. You can see the similarities: field lines, running with the ball, lateral or backwards pass, goal posts (in the US they were moved to the back while in Canada they're still in the front).
