I totally lived this story too. I picked these up from the 7/11 and at 12 yrs old, was not prepared for how well the story was told. My mind was blown and became a lifelong comic reader because of these stories and this Daredevil run. Great breakdown and thanks for reminding me of the joy I experienced with these in 88!

I am not a JRJR fan but seeing these issues side by side makes me appreciate him more and I am slowly growing to like him.

I understand why some people don’t like his current art style, but the man can really draw. I think it’s because he doesn’t have a “pretty “ art style & some people get turned off. The DD stuff with Williamson was amazing for me.

I love this Daredevil run! JRJR with Al Williamson is a terrific tandem, and Ann Nocenti's writing is quality. The Mephisto storyline from that run is beautiful, especially the cover of #282, featuring the Silver Surfer.

4 years later, Ann Nocenti uses the same The Old Zen tale, page 15 of Daredevil, in Spiderman 17, page 8, where Peter Parker "dies" and then has his face off against Thanos. Appreciate how your channel brings back all these incredible childhood memories, Ed & Jim!

I don’t know if anyone mentioned it in the comments but The Punisher Magazine #8 reprinted both of these issues in black & white.

The Fall of the Mutants chapter, #252, should be your next review from this run!

There's an odd unofficial crossover of sorts from the 70's between Marvel and DC based on the writers, Steve Englehart, Len Wein and Gerry Conway attending a Halloween party in Rutledge Vermont. They write themselves into the story along with friends and tell an on running story between Amazing Adventures 16 (the Beast), The Mighty Thor 207, and Justice League of America 103. Artwise, I think it's Don Heck doing the Beast, John Buscema on Thor and Dick Dillon on JLA. Might make an interesting Halloween segment.

It’s not remotely super-heroes, but about two decades ago, my first full-sized comic book was a split with a friends book and we told one crossover story from two perspectives so you had to read both halves to get the whole picture. It was called The Stockboy/Burger Bomb Flipbook (my comic back then was The Stockboy, and my half was inked by the one-and-only Art Baltazar, with cover color by Cat Garza 👌 it’s a real goofy book but fits this concept, and I’m sure you can score one for crazy cheap these days haha if I find any in storage I’ll mail it your way

Yo Jim and Ed! What about the great Steve Gerber/Erik Larsen Howard/Leonard the Duck heist? That's some pretty great Rashômon style storytelling and one of the greatest swindles in all comics crossover history. Took place in both Marvel's SpiderMan Team Up 5 and Image's Savage Dragon/Destroyer Duck one shot back in '96. Great stuff, hope you both cover it sometime on the channel. ✌🏼🦆

Great idea to compare these issues! Removing the storyline from the equation, just comparing action of 2 specific characters fighting from 2 different artists is a great concept for a video. Also, as someone who was introduced to JRJR primarily through his current (ugly) art, it is good to see his older stuff when he was still killing it.

What a great idea! I read several of these pages, but the Punisher/DD were not in the translation I read. How neat to write in a way so the Typhoid Mary story will work perfectly without the Punisher parts. Love JrJr, what a draftsman!

I believe there was a Flash and Manhunter Rashomon-type crossover around Invasion! Would have been William Messner-Loebs and Joh Ostrander/ Kim Yale as writers, similar era as these books.

One cool thing Civil War did was show events from the event in a different perspective in the solo books. Iron Man's was great and added depth to his actions. Fraction's Punisher was completely different from his scene in Civil War.

I'd love it if you reviewed the Daredevil inferno issues by Nocenti and JRJR and AW (skip that terrible Ditko issue).

The War of the Bounty Hunters crossover from last summer in the Star Wars books used the technique a bit. Not as well as this though.
