I find the Frank Miller's take to be more appealling because despite Matt's anger, he manages to use it to a good purpose. Not only that but Frank Miller's wolrd building is a lot more harsh and dark, so Matt sees some really messed up stuff and still manages to not kill anyone and to always strive for what is right. In other words, the depressing world of Frank Miller makes the heroism of Matt stronger and more impactful, at least to me.

I think I prefer Daredevil Yellow over Man Without Fear. I respect both works immensely, and I know that Man without fear is almost universally accepted. However, there's something warm about Yellow. Those old 60s days when nothing could go wrong. Or so it seemed. There was also a bit more heart as a man trying to serve justice because its the right thing to do as opposed to unleashing anger.

I've always felt that The Man Without Fear, while brilliantly told, was not necessary to read in order to understand the greater Daredevil story that gets told by Miller in his initial run. Aside from Elektra feeling like a very different character than how she's depicted in that run, I always thought that the progression of Matt's life and miseries worked better as a crescendo, with the beginning of his life as Ol' Hornhead being less intense than what would come later. In that sense, I think Daredevil: Yellow is the more fitting tale. It's a story that reeks of melancholy and seeing the past with rose-tinted glasses, but given the reason that Daredevil is telling the story, coping with recently losing Karen in such an ugly way, I think it works not just as a retelling of his early days, but fits in perfectly in the chronological story of Daredevil. I see it as a man who wants the past to have been better than it really was because of who he's focusing on and what she meant to him, but as seen in multiple occasions such as the last interaction between Matt and Slade, he can't help but let some of the ugliness of what's to come seep into his idealized past. Even the way the story ends has this feeling of a man trying to be hopeful without truly feeling it. I say this because reading this after reading Guardian Devil, which ends on a similar, "there's hope in the future" note, you get the sense that Matt keeps trying to cope with Karen's death over and over again but just keeps spiraling into this heavy sense of loss and depression. It's this sense of depression that influences all of his relationships going into the Brian Michael Bendis run, especially with his future wife, Milla. I should note that I am attempting to fit Ben Urich's theory of Matt suffering from a nervous breakdown from Karen's death from issue 59 of the Bendis run, so if this interpretation of Yellow feels unnatural, I do apologize. Anyways, I'd say Daredevil: Yellow is the better of the two if for no other reason that the book does not try to rewrite the cheesy, swashbuckling, early day adventures of an idealistic Daredevil. It makes those stories feel like they have a sense of purpose in the larger story of Daredevil, & I think it works better because of that.
@MattDraper6 жыл бұрын
Wonderful analysis! I prefer Yellow, but tried to weigh them equally against one another. I feel like Bendis’ nervous breakdown take on Matt feels authentic, a lot more so than the end of Guardian Devil. However, I read Yellow as slightly separate from all of that. It just feels like a completely different beast to me. But I really like your take here. Thank you for sharing your thoughts!

You might interested to know that the Astro City storyline The Dark Age had a Daredevil/Green Arrow analog called Street Angel in it. Like Matt, he starts off as this bright, chipper swashbuckler before turning into a gritty vigilante who beats up thugs to the point of actually making them bleed to death albeit unintentionally (a bold if logical bit of writing on Kurt Busiek's part). By the 1980s, he's quit and trying to atone as a neighborhood mentor and boxing instructor. It seems much of this subplot is informed by many of the points you just made about Yellow.

Johnathon Haney That sounds really cool. I feel like if someone like Daredevil we’re going to be tied down to real time, aging & fluctuating his moral code, and have a conclusion, this is the conclusion that would best suit him. I’ll add this story to the reading list; thanks for the recommendation.
@johnathonhaney82916 жыл бұрын
@@Murdock_the_Pooch My pleasure...I'm an unapologetic evangelist for Astro City to anyone who will listen. Another factoid: The Dark Age actually started life as the followup to Busiek's Marvels series for Marvel Comics. When that didn't happen, he created Astro City with an eye towards making that happen. I should mention that the Dark Age is a huge, sprawling story that typically comes in two volumes with a lot of characters at play. The main focus, though, is on two brothers, one a regular cop, the other a petty criminal. It's worth the read, I promise.

Seconded...it's the very definition of a hidden gem and some of O'Neill's finest--and most disturbing--writing in his entire career.
@johnathonhaney82916 жыл бұрын
@Frank Castle O'Neill did explain why he went that route in an interview. As much respect as he had for Steve Ditko, he was just the polar opposite in politics, outlook and everything else. So that's why O'Neill started things off with Question nearly dying in a river with a fractured skull. He could justify telling the story he wanted after that. One thing O'Neill really emphasized about the Question was, well, the questioning nature of the character. Every one of O'Neill's stories were moral conundrums that had none of the easy answers that Ditko liked to push in his stories. It's why, though I only read most of those once, the stories still haunt me 20 years after the fact.

Then I started reading the comics and I fell in love with them (Miller run, Waid run, Guardian Devil). I just bought The Man Without Fear during my Winter Break and it’s a great read, same with Daredevil: Yellow. Also, I just finished Brian Michael Bendis’ run and it’s fantastic. I think another great comic to read for additional layers to Daredevil's backstory is the Battlin' Jack Murdock mini series. It makes Matt's conviction seem that much stronger after we see what his father had to get through to make sure Matt didnt become anything like him and how all the harsh lessons he teaches Matt have been beaten into him by his brutal way of life. It compliments both Yellow and Man Without Fear in great ways and has some incredible art by the great Carmine Di Giandomencio with fantastic writing by Zeb Wells.

Lovely video. Daredevil is one of my all-time favourite superheroes, and I really enjoy hearing you talk about him because it is clear that you share that love for the character. It is interesting to compare these two stories, and you did a good job (making me look even more forward to your comparison between Kingdom Come and MARVELS). Reading the comments, I guess I'm in the minority in that I favour MWF over Yellow. I guess it's because I read the former at a formative age (sometime in my teens) when internet bookshops weren't as big and it was harder for me to get my hands on comic books. That, and I've always loved John Romita Juniors pretty sketchy art-style. It doesn't fit every superhero, but with characters like Daredevil and Spider-Man, it's a perfect match in my book (JRJRs Spider-Man is MY Spider-Man, so to speak. That's the first Peter Parker that pops into my mind, once again probably because I read his stories at a formative age). I also thought Elektra was a bit one-dimensional compared to how she was in Millers original run when she was more conflicted, and a lot of early warning signs of Millers later, less likeable tools, started to show (a "might makes right" attitude towards violence for example), but I still thoroughly enjoy it (although both Batman Year One is a better origin story and Born Again is a better Daredevil story). And while I enjoyed Yellow I think I kept comparing it to Spider-Man: Blue which, in my opinion, is a much better work. Making it harder for me to enjoy Yellow on its own terms. Still, to each their own. Keep up the good work.

Happy New Year Matt! I know it is Late, but I wanted to say it anyway. I have read both of these stories and you highlight the tonal contrast between them very well. Yellow is a fun adventure story with a tinge of tragedy and Without Fear is a dark and mature tale of a man trying to use his inner demons to protect the innocent. Great analysis for two great stories featuring my favourite Marvel Superhero. I really hope you get the chance to do a video on the Ann Nocenti run, as I feel that run is underrated.

Daredevil Yellow is my favorite. A lot of edgelords who only know the Netflix show cannot fathom a Daredevil that isn't a mess of a man, and are dismayed when they see his more well adjusted personality in his comics. Some really are only fans of the Miller run and maybe some of Vol. 3. But even at his darkest Matt is simply not the edgy type of hero Miller is known for. Sure he can be dark but there's a far more hopeful, noble and heroic streak to Matt than there is on many of Miller's most well known characters. Hell, even Batman is above Miller's taste, which is why Miller had to come up with alternate versions of Batman to do what he wanted to do in TDKR and the infamous All Star Batman and Robin.
