For a man with a chronically damaged heart Bobby Darin looks very energetic in this 1-derful performance with Andy and Vic. I was 15 when Bobby died at age 37 on December 20, 1973, such a sad day for me. My earliest remembrance of music in english is listening to Bobby's LP which included Down By The River Side, My Darling Clementine, Beyond The Sea, Splish Splash, etc. The movie Kevin Spacey made about him was a lovely tribute and thanks to it my daughters, ages 22 and 17, love Bobby's music. Blessings from San Juan PR !!!

Saludos, Beto (Luis Humberto - We are from the same neighborhood, and even took Organic and Analytic Chemistry at the UPR). It has been such an impressive remembrance you have articulated here about Bobby Darin's passing. I was at a loss that you were such a great fan of his. He was at the peak of his prime in this show (1965) - so, he could pull this act off, as his rheumatic valvular disease would be striking him hard a few years later. Mr. Bobby Darin, Mr. Andy Williams and Mr. Vic Damone had a wonderful time here. Such camaraderie comes across as real. As breathtaking as this performance was by these three gentlemen, it came on the heels of the celebration Mr. Bobby Darin held earlier in 1960, in a video with Paul Anka, Pat Boone and Frankie Avalon. The leitmotiv then was the year 1942. "That's the year I was born" would blurt Mr. Anka at Mr. Avalon, Mr. Boone and Mr. Darin - teasing them, by being the youngest of them all. That meeting was a class act by itself - memorable.

What amaze me how ALL of the entertainer of that day truly care very much for each other ... These 3 plus Sammy Davis Jr, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin even Jerry Lewis. True Dean couldn't work with Jerry but the way he joke about Jerry show down deep there was warm feeling for him. You don't make fun of someone you don't care about. Today entertainers rip each other up, try to prove they are number 1. So sad

And also love him running across the stage and punching holes in the other two guys' hats. Simply hilarious! You can tell they were all having so much fun. Great writing!
@tuxguys9 жыл бұрын
This is elegant and surreal... Incredibly tightly-rehearsed, and yet they're giving the impression that they're making it up as they go along. I've seen Sinatra, Crosby and Martin be this good together, but never better than this. And although there is a great deal of physical energy being expended here, they're never out of breath, and their 3-part unisons are pitch-perfect. (I have new respect for Vic Damone.)
@a1chemist18 жыл бұрын
Vic is good but he couldn't swing and not nearly as versatile as Darin.
@tuxguys8 жыл бұрын
The Alchemist I've always considered him second-string, but this performance of his impressed me.
@a1chemist18 жыл бұрын
Compare the two albums where Billy May (a true swing band leader) accompanies: 1. Darin's Oh, Look at Me Now 2. Damone's The Lively Ones Damone sounds stiff and forced, like Robert Goulet trying to sing Screamin' Jay Hawkins. Damone has a good technical voce, the vibratto and phrasing are decent. He cannot swing, has less range than Darin.
@tuxguys8 жыл бұрын
The Alchemist Do you hear me arguing?
@a1chemist18 жыл бұрын
Nope, just sayin'. A lot of folks on these old crooner shows think a guy is talented when he can stand and sing like Robert Goulet. You've got the right idea.

(guest) Echoing what several folks are saying here, that these old shows , especially Andy Williams' ones, were so entertaining, never disappointing, musically satisfying , and funny. Ever since I was a kid, I remember one scene with Andy and 2(?)others , chatting as " yokels", and one said, " ..when I get rich, I'm gonna buy me an extra day, cos when I say rich, I mean RICH !" Isn't but funny the things that stick in your mind ! This would be from over 50 years ago ! Does anyone remember that ?! Have you seen the one with Richard Chamberlain as " Beau Regarde", about the riverboat, his sister, and the moustachioed Andy playing the baddie ! They had such a sense of humour, and were doing the southern accent in an exaggerated way : loved every moment ! But they also then quickly slipped into a song and dance routine : considering this was all ' live', that was pretty good going! As others have said, how I wish the modern programme makers would learn from the old shows ! I'm increasingly opening up you tube to savour these gems, rather than watch the regular current t.v. " entertainment" shows, most of which are boring by comparison . I think the nearest we had in u.k. were " The Black and white minstrel show", and " the good old days". The B & W show was stopped due to "political correctness" . Why on earth couldn't they carry on with the music etc, but if they were so sensitive, why didn't they just ditch the black faces? Anyway, loving seeing the old shows here, Many thanks. 😊😊😊😊

What I really love (aside from this video, the "Do-Re-Mi" video, and these guys) is how, in the comments, everyone says how they think Eddy Fisher is the best of the three or how they prefer Andy Williams, but no one says that they hate all but Bobby Darin and that anyone who disagrees is stupid and should burn in hell. What I'm trying to get at is that everyone respects each other, each other's opinion, and the three musicians. I just think that's wonderful. :)
