Doesn't help that a lot of the symptoms are just what kids do anyways so its one of the most misdiagnosed things for kids, especially ones with ADHD. The umbrella has also become so wide with the removal of asbergers as it's own thing that people don't even know what autism is anymore and has been chalked up to "bieng a little quirky" instead of a mental disorder that potentially changes the way you live your life.

I think it all comes down to exposure. In the early 1900s if you were autistic they would just ship you off to the looney bin no questions asked, but now that there is more accessible treatment and diagnosis available it’s much more common to see, hear about and interact with those on the spectrum, which kind of takes away the demonization they were labeled with in the beginning. So yeah it’s really cool how the general publics perception of the spectrum has shifted, I hope it keeps going in this direction :D

@@LakkzScratch it's more that i consider getting physical and people calling you useless through insults the real serious offense. when i was in middle school it was rare kids straight up calling me a mongoloid or disgusting because i acted autistic, maybe it was cause i was a girl so ppl usually pitied me more than anything or just tried to use me to get simple things done, i was slightly bullied compared to other kids, (but i kinda deserved tbh, i was insufferable and i was a bully myself, kids r fkd up in the head, i tell you) but compared to how autistic ppl were treated 30 years ago, and even today even if the cases r fewer, trust me it was heaven, even if i got traumatised from school, atleast i got the chance to study.
