The 'Z' reverse, a unique practice in DHR, in which the train goes forward, changes line, reverses and moves forward in a 'Z' format in order to gain altitude in difficult terrain of the Himalayan foothill. This series of 'Z' reverse on the New Jalpaiguri - Darjeeling line are found near Tindharia, West Bengal.

Eco Park is Open NOW: Watch Video here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/l4qxoGaKrbmSkM0 The largest nature park in Kolkata, Eco Park is OPEN now. The park has been open for the first time after Lockdown has been imposed in our country since March 2020. The Darjeeling Toy Train is one of the major attractions inside Eco Park. It is open. People are seen riding the Toy Train. The Park is back to life after a lull of 5-6 months. It's greenery all around. Lots of flowers are blooming and fresh air. However, some water activities are still closed. But the best part is Parking is free for the time being. Hope you will enjoy the Vlog. Watch it fully and do leave your comments below the Video. This technique came in the mind of Herbert Rumsay a civil engineer who was responsible to take care of the functioning of the Darjeeling Himalayan Railways . Initially Herbert Rumsay had failed to find a solution to how the locomotive would be able to overcome such a very steep gradient ascend . However one day he was in a a ballroom dance with his wife and during this Ballroom dance when his wife suggested “ Darling if you can’t go forward, why don’t you come back just like that in a ball dance “. Therefore this incident inspired the zig zag reversing method

This is the "Z" reversal in Darjeeling railway at a place called Rangtong. Many of you would have enjoyed this jolly ride in this train. But I don't know how many of you have noticed this difficult turn. In 1880, the concerned engineer laying the track, could not find enough space for the track to climb up. It was impossible to take the track forward along the hills. He was stuck. His wife gave an idea. Engineer's wife: Darling, why are you so much worried about this piece of paper? Engineer: I am not able to find a solution for this Engineering problem. Wife: What problem? tell me. Engineer: After constructing up to this stretch, not able to proceed forward. Wife: So what? Engineer: No place to go forward, very steep terrain. Wife: If you are not able to proceed forward, don't worry. Go backward. Engineer: what? Wife: Go reverse! The engineer got the solution and finalized his design. He had mentioned this instant in his diary. Moral: Never turn deaf to your wife's advice!.

Switchbacks were common on US logging railroads from many years and there were a few on secondary lines too. A few still exist today. This is sure a unique and photogenic location. One has to love the grade. In the US there is even a crime train Movie called Switchback. It's pretty good!

The train reversal is brilliant! As is the history and train design. BUT. The crazy intersection with a busy road - without a gate or official notice that a train would be *backing up* across it - is terrifying. I would not want to be in either of the far ends of this train!!

Mountain railways have two unique features to address sudden change in altitude- loops and zigzags. This is a very good video which explains what is a zig zag in Himalayan railway. The other two features of such railways are tunnels and bridges.

"Kasto Mazza" song in Darjeeling Toy Train.. The composition of the song is beautifully matched by the dream like vintage toy train in every frame and angle. So much so, that we filmed our own version aboard the same train that was boarded by Saif Ali Khan & Vidya Balan. Another dream fulfilled with use of just a mobile phone and lots of enthusiasm 😉 @Cttg

Definitely well preserved and impressive railway. These small narrow gauge trains are unique in their own right. I shot one recently "Smallest train in Africa" when ever you can check it out. Greetings from Zimbabwe:-)

We have that in Peru too - to go from the capital, Lima, to Cerro de Pasco, in the Andes Range highlands, (almost 5,000 m.a.s.l. there are good zig-zags as we call them I used to work in Casaracra Ranch near la Oroya and watched the zig-zag mornings and evenings.
