the essential difference is that these are the same kind of soft plastic as the green and tan army men you get in buckets from walmart. they are indeed cheap and you can go a long way with these but people should know that this is not in the same league as wargaming minis made with the hard plastic. there's a lot of give to the figures which result in bent swords and spears and such. on the plus-side, they're far less likely to break.

1/72nd scale is huge in its own circles. The size was especially popular in the 1960's and 1970's due to Airfix and Atlantic. They are 20mm in size, usually more proportionally true as opposed to the 28-32mm "heroic" miniatures with ridiculously oversized heads, hands, feet and weapons.

I think this scale works very well for D&D. Many of the WizKids line and similar lines (like the Pathfinder minis) are on the smaller side, compared to Warhammer models. So a single box of the Orcs will be enough to supply an entire campaign's worth of encounters. (Barring bosses, of course). The Wargs and Trolls, though. Those I can see myself using for wargames. Their scale is ambiguous enough that they could slot into many armies. I could definitely add the Wargs to my Gnoll Beastmen army as chaos hounds.

For reviewing the entire line, including zombies, go to Plastic Soldier Review, all one word, dot comm. Also, if memory serves 1 72 depot dot comm. 1/72 is mathematically from bottom of foot to top of head is 25mm. It is called 20mm in the market and conflates 20mm, 1/87, 1/76, 1/72, and 25mm into a group. There are ancients to modern to super natural to samurai to medieval to fantasy available in 1/72 (20mm) scale. HO scale (1/87) Rail road trees and bushes work well. For hard terrain there are some building kits, else 3D printing or MDF. I wargame WW2 and Vietnam all in 1/72.

There are some big difference between 28mm(1:56) and 20mm(1:72) and that is that painting 20mm miniatures is even more a pain in the ass and less fun than with 28mm. Yes you can put more minis on your table, but you have to paint all those minis and because of that small scale it's all detail painting work. You also have less options when it comes to the miniatures, because kitbashing is also more difficult or depending on the mini's sculp impossible.

One thing to point out is that while these are a stretch for use in 28mm gaming, They do work quite well for LOTR Strategy Battle Game from GW (aside from those awesome centaurs and mummies) and most of the visual design is (ahem) "inspired" by the Peter Jackson films. Even if you don't use them for that. They could be great in Oathmark, Dragon Rampant or a "multiple figures to a base" game like Hordes of the Things or Mighty Armies.. If you like the models and are already 80 bucks in on them, why not grab an alternate rule set and give it a try. Oathmark is fantastic and Dragon Rampant is as well. They are miniatures agnostic and scale agnostic in as much as it comes down to what you think looks right on the bases. 1/72nd is 20mm for most historical miniatures but can swing to "true 25mm" . GW product, being based on fantasy and sci fi elements became the the king of scale creep and took that to 28mm then "Heroic 28mm" which is more or less 32mm.

These equal 20mm in scale a bit big for my 15mm armies. A lot of people want to get into war games but hit the GDW price wall and complexity barrier. There are many alternatives for rules, One Page Rules is free, Hordes of the Things is low cost, One Hour Wargames, whilst not fantasy can be easily tweaked for fantasy of the LotR variety. There are a lot of inexpensive and free rules options available. If you are building armies or dungeon crawling minis from scratch these are not bad. It will take some trimming, and scrubbing to get them to prime and paint to a table ready standard but that is part of the hobby. Obviously I am trying to encourage folks to look at war gamming from a unabashedly non-GDW perspective and not sweat having to expend huge dollars, thanks for showing these to us.

I've used this sort of figure before (WW2 and Ancient Romans/Celts). These sorts of figures tend to be cheaper and have good detail for their size. One down side to consider is that the paint tends to flake off them more easily than it would on hard plastic or metal. I remember having the battlemaster set and then getting inerested in warhammer and the size was a bit smaller and the trend seems to be getting larger over time. Centar is the worse one because we know size of horse+man but a small orc can be a goblin, andwargs are totaly right size of a wolf or monster wolf because those can range in all kinds of sizes of realistic smaller then man or bigger then man. There's a real argument that everyone not doing 20mm is doing it completely wrong. :) I really wish there were more companies like this putting out fantasy 1/72 lines. I've already been 3d printing up a lot of 20mm stuff for the sheer fact I can bring a lot of stuff with for TTRPG play.

I grabbed the cimmerians, "modern"/heavy metal amazons and the last box of Vikings. I figure they can at least make a nice tiny scale game or a skirmish. If i like them, I'll grab some of the Egyptian ones.

So, I've never seen your channel but this video was recommended on YT. As a mini painter, I feel you've just introduced me to a new alleyway filled with beautiful addiction... Those trolls and wargs are great, and I agree that it's unfortunate the orcs aren't larger. Oh also, 28mm is roughly 1:60 scale if I remember.

I think they are called 28mm as they aren’t to a specific scale - some details are overemphasised, others are diminished. Eg on 28mm models heads, hands and equipment are usually very large so it would be wrong to give them a ‘scale’.
@thomaschase70974 ай бұрын
28mm is 1/64. The math is based on the average male human height of 1800mm. 1800mm / 64 scale, is 28mm. The market place like to create and conflate scales based on a more algorithmic approach for "average height " using a range of averages heights. This is the pretext for including 28mm, with 1/56 and 1/48. Some people do go for larger vehicle scales to offset basing of minis. Personally I do my best to go all 1/72. There are good metal manufacturers that make 1/72 minis too. Then there is 3D printing. The hi res resin printer with new resin formulas are making much more durable products. Future is bright unless only a very small percentage have any disposable income in the future.

I wish you would show comparison of these miniatures up against WizKid and reaper miniature. For example, I am wondering if the or you’re showing would be the same size as WizKid goblin? I think they would be a good use if they do. You have an instant goblin army

Just checked, those Orcs are 16 bucks after shipping for basically 40 badass gnoblars in my Ogre army

those 'orcs' sure do look a lot like goblins at that scale...I'm tempted to get them for goblin army fodder! Honestly, the War Trolls could be orc warlords easily at that scale too!

From memory Dark Alliance does make some other larger monster models the same size as the Trolls.

Isn't heroquest scale 28mm meaning approximately1/48? So you would expect these (which are properly advertised as 1/72} to be quite a bit smaller...

ok, they are on a bit small-ish side... is this the 15mm scale?

Doesn't even need to be scaled. KoW just requires that the unit footprint be a certain size; it's pretty much up to you how big or how many minis are in that space. KoW is one of the first games I thought of for these minis.
@mattaffenit98984 ай бұрын
I have one issue with them, from having gotten a couple of the boxes, and it's that they're 1/72 scale. The vast majority of minis I use are 28mm with some 32mm mixed in, which is very noticeably bigger. Otherwise I'd be all over them for just bulking out monster numbers. I want to like them, though.

Direct ripoffs is more like it (not that I care about such things). I was actually wondering the same thing as this could be a way to get a MESBG army on the cheap.

Great video, would love to see more like this. Maybe look at some historicals for mercenaries/henchmen? Sure you could find some at victrix/perry minis/wargames atlantic/gripping beast/fireforge or more fantasy like northstar or if you want them really cheap em4 miniatures. Internet friend have made agoblin war band from the orcs, but have not seen them in real life, how do they scale with the hero quest goblins?

Oh very nice. Those centaurs could be chaotic halfling centaurs. :P overuse of chaotic/dread magic have stilled their growth. However they remain fierce and resilient, magic or ranged weapons is ideal in quickly taking these foe's down while in combat. :) The mummies a little small yeah, i would call them cursed children of the night. Cast away maybe like a version of a spartan warriors. :) The orcs look awesome. Id def buy a few boxes of those. :) Could have a bunch of them on a HQ base as a sort of larger snotlings mob. Little trouble makers. 🤣 The trolls are perfect. Could have a ton of fun homebrewing those. :)

1/72 should be true 25mm scale. 20mm should be very close to 1/64 scale
