Today we are taking a look at how the Dark Angels feel about their new Primaris Marines, and the returned Primarch Roboute Guilliman!
The events we are covering today are from the Warhammer 40,000 novel "War of Secrets" I really recommend you read this novel for yourself first. I like that. He comes back and is extremely displeased at the way the dark angels have handled the Luther rebellion. And he handles the news with a repeat of history. He turns to the primaris, their abilities are better yes, but also they are untainted with the burden of what the chapter has hidden. Leaving the old marines behind like he did with Luther. A new rebellion begins, and the rock gets blasted into a pebble.

@@ryanlanca9927 I think not, besisde the fact that it would be a bit of laisy writing, i think The Lion will have learn about his past mistake like Guilliman. But it's 40k isn't It? Must be grimdark. I have an idea. Imagine the imperium is under a deadly threat (like all traitors primarch attacking terra). The Lion sees no redemption in his old sons and yet has hope in the new primaris and guilliman about saving the imperium. So he launched a suicide attack with all the old dark angels and they sacrificed themselves while pushing back the traitors. Jonson died alongside his old sons, finally redeeming the dark angels and allow the primaris dark angels to continue the fight... and he can have a glorious death like fighting multiples traitors primarch in single combat, imagine the Lion handling demon Angron and Perturabo, knowing that he will die and cannot hope to triumph against such foes but give time to explose some king of bomb or allow the emperor to be reborn... A knight's death, worthy and fitting of the Lion.

I like it. I wasn't really being too serious about mine, but I did think he wouldn't be likely to do a repeat. Yours is much better. I would like to see him kill at least one of them by his sword though. He was one of the best swordsmen amongst the primarchs. He was probably better than Angron but wouldn't win against daemon Angron. Perturabo, I think.

Don't forget that the Dark Angels were testing the primeras the entire time. They likely wanted to see what this whole cloak issue was about. They likely wanted to see how it would play out and if this is a flaw to be considered.

When Astellan was interrogated upon his capture, by his Dark Angels brethren, he warned the Chaplain that the Chapter's secretive and distrusting nature, would be their downfall. Clearly the distrust of the Primaris and their contempt for the very Humans they're supposed to protect (especially that without their Geneseed, they are Human, too.) that Astellan (one of the Fallen of the 1st Legion) is being proved to be correct.

Man I can't wait for the Lion to be the next Primarch to come out, the conversation between him and Guilliman will be awesome. Plus Guilliman won't be so alone and would have a defacto warmaster with Lion Eljohnson at his side.

Could be interesting, there is a theory that since the lion is the most similar in appearance to the emperor himself that the lion was suppose to be the warmaster and horus just got it because he was found first.

Lion would 100% act like Farron. He was raised as a knight, and would act as such, a shield for the weak. His sons currently have strayed from that path, barring exceptions like Azrael. Albeit his acts of kindness are few and far between comparatively speaking. Return the first and greatest legion to glory, El’Johnson.

Sure, The Lion was never as cuddly and jovial as Vulkan or Leman and at time, he could be as cold and unreachable as Perturabo or Dorn, but yeah, he was honorable to the core. Maybe he could have afforded to be less strict his those close to him and he did have his ruthless moments, but I doubt he would have been so callous as to let someone freeze to death in front of him, simply so he wouldn't "waste time" on an act that took all of 5 seconds. I really hope he wakes up soon. Granted, as a Salamander's fan, I want my boy Vulkan back next, but we REALLY need someone like The Lion alongside Roboute (plus, they need to patch up their little spat during the Imperium Secondus that Gulliman still feels bad about.)

True, but I can't see the Lion being in favor of primaris as a concept, as they are a deviation from his father's sacred work. I can't see him trusting Gulliman either, which is why I think he'd be the most interesting primarch to return.

Agreed. I love the sons of Vulkan. Not to say most Chapters are cruel. Indeed, the Primaris was right that letting that woman freeze to death in front of them was just downright petty. But I love that the Salamanders aren't just respectful to humans, they're actually capable of being friends with mortals. That, and I love how much they're into pyromania XD Friendship and Flamers solves all of life's problems.

Fun Fact! Techmarines in the Dark Angels chapter are not a part of the Inner Circle and as such are not privy to the Ancient technology form the Dark Age of Technology that is within the Rock! The Chief Techmarines of the Chapter are entombed within the Rock alive to help The Rock's technology running smoothly. This is due to the Loyalty that Techmarines have to Mars as a part of their relationship to the Adeptus Mechanicus. Perhaps I am the odd one out in my opinions but I feel like voicing them anyway. I do not remember where I heard this from but I think it goes somewhat like this. "The Dark Angels Legion is unique for the fact that they were the first and therefore grew up alone and trusted only their own." Probably heard it from one of the Dark Angel Videos on KZbin. The Dark Angels have been on their own in the search for the Fallen for nigh on 10 millennia and now a bunch of new marines of whom you have no experience with is suddenly thrust upon you, it is hard to accept those who have not gone through the same traditions and rituals as you have with full trust. The Crimson Fists upon receiving Primaris Marines are a shining example of how well Primaris Marines can be integrated in the a standing Chapter's culture. But the Dark Angel's culture and that of their successors is defined by their hunt for the Fallen. As is stated in the novel Ravenwing Captain Sammael of the Ravenwing, the ones that search for clues and leads for the Fallen Angels, once wondered what the Dark Angels were without the hunt for the Fallen. Personal conjecture: I understand the Dark Angels Legion better by understanding the Alpha Legion and vice versa. To the wider Imperium of Man both Space Marine groups keep secrets form all others and share a perspective of us versus them in relation to other races of the Galaxy. The Dark Angels had a tradition and culture from both Caliban and Terra that was created by the Emperor and molded by Lion El'Jonson into an exceptional weapon. That the Dark Angels and their successors actually have more accomplished honors than either the Ultramarines and the Blood Angels (Totally debatable by the way.) speaks to the level of skill that the !st Legion developed as a result of their training and experience. But the Destruction of Caliban and the Splitting of the Legion between Luther and Lion El'Jonson broke the Legion. Bereft of their Primarch and their Homeworld of Caliban, The 1st Legion lost their base for what they were based upon, Loyalty and Honor. But how could they have honor knowing a single traitor existed that could inform The High Lords of Terra that the !st Legion had broken away from the Imperium's rule. This was right after the Heresy and tensions were running dangerously high. Alpha Legion: Known no homeworld where the Primarchs landed, Last Legion to come into full being, Numbers unknown, and their method of waging war not honorable, but certainly effective. From an age standpoint the Alpha Legion could be considered the Runt of the Space Marine Legions, they were the Last to find their Primarch, Last to become a Legion, and with so much of the Galaxy conquered, the Last to leave their mark. Their culture and structure is unknown to all, but themselves as is evidenced by the Trademark reply to Outsiders "I am Alpharius." But with the Loss of their Primarchs and their Scattering at Eskrador the Alpha Legion became easier prey to Chaos. Summary: The 1st Legion had a culture that was shamed by Luther and the Fallen's actions so much so that until they were made to repent, they could take no pride in their actions. The 20th Legion has a culture that is so hidden and mysterious that much of the Alpha Legion seek out identities to call their own. Both hide their secrets, but the Dark Angels do not give out information and use their longstanding loyalty to the Imperium as a cloak to hide their shame. The Alpha Legion hide their secrets with evasion, lies, and their allegiance to Chaos, so anything they say be it true or not is automatically suspect. Sorry if I got a little off topic, I am new to Warhammer 40k since I am only a 3 year initiate, but I found alarming number of similarties between the First and the Last Legions, 1st and 20th, Alpha and Omega, Primaris and Vicesima. Understanding how one operates or does not operate gave me insight into how the other Legions operate. Have a good day and I enjoyed this!

I’ve really fell out of love with the Dark Angels in recent years. They were the first Chapter I collected back in the 90’s because they were just so cool. But after all that’s come out about them, killing Guard regiments and wiping out whole populations only as a just in case a Fallen is amongst them or someone might possibly maybe perhaps know a little bit about them, has left me disliking them even more. Johnson and his 30k Dark Angels are still my favourite legion but how they’ve been shaped in 40k really doesn’t sit well with me, and makes me wonder what the Lion would make of them after all this time

Love or hate the DA, their lore tends to be a cut above the rest simply because they aren't bolter porn. Their lore allows for a more engaging story. In a similar vein I hope they expand more modern day Alpha legion lore and Blood Ravens. Both have the same opportunity to fun lore that doesn't swirl around blasting Xenos and fancy close combat fights.

@Lepszy Komentator indeed. In my case I am drawing from Roboute's response to his own Chapter and even Chapter Master. He was shocked at how they venerated the book he wrote in an almost religious manner. In a similar fashion, I feel that while the Lion is secretive and understands trying to protect the honor of the first... they've sought to protect their honor by dishonoring themselves and becoming more like the rebellious Dark Angels than the one's that followed the Lion, at least in manner and function. Don't recall which book it was but there was a book where it talked about the massed expansion of the dungeons in the fortress. How they started what amounted to Interrogator Chaplains, and kept people and space marines in those cells. A practice that continues now. In the end all that they do is to "hide their shame" which is extremely dishonorable. That alone will piss off the Lion who is all about Honor and the Code of the Knightly Orders of his homeworld.

Good job as always Rho. I am a devotee of the Lion and the Dark Angels, and this books was indeed a must read for me. The best part of the novel I feel was how the events came to a full circle at the end and the primaris marines the novel centers on, learn the truth about the Dark Angels and the price of treachery, and the older marines come to accept these Primaris Marines as true brothers because of the events of the novel. Definitely a must read.

This book was very badly written and contradictory to previous novels and codexs. Unless the fallen were involved the Dark Angels are very protective of human life (read purging of kadillus).

This book was utter garbage and not true to DA. Also in pandorax Azrael wants to protect civilians first and foremost whereas the Grey Knights want the opposite, they basically tell the DA to forget about civilians and focus on fighting only.

Leman Russ is my favourite Primarch. The Horus heresy series really made him into a more complete character with much more depth than the typical barbarian we had before. But I love most the Primarchs!

As far as I can tell by reading the Plague wars: the primaris marines; for example the primaris Space Wolves act very space wolfy. Also that guy had never even been on Fenris. All he wanted was to go back there. So, no I just can't agree that all primaris are trained Ultramarines in other colors. Also Roboute Guilliman (not Girly man) is frigging awesome. Give the man credit for all that he is trying to do. Like waking up blacked out from yesterday's party and finding out your home is wrecked. All you can do is trying to fix what your asshole guests ruined thoroughly.

Guilliman isn't stupid, he would have to make the primaris marines as close to the originals as possible while also improving them lest the originals not accept them, all the primaris really need at this point is more combat expirence and to be exposed more to the chapters culter that they were made for, at the end of the day even if modified they were still made with the geneseed of a primarch.

If you read the Apocalypse novel, it's the same. The Imperial Fist dude was blunt, straight forward and always busy calculating stuff while the Raven guard guy jumped straight into his detective work. The white scar guy described him as : bigger and more cramped inside but he's a brother just like every space marine. In fact, the Ultramarine guys in the avenging son acted the least like Ultramarine. He kept asking his captain questions about everything like a child first time went to the zoo

Im a wolf through and through and have no love for the sons of the Lion but I dont trust or like the primaris at all not in lore not in game.They look too modern day special ops like and that just dosnt sit well with me and I dont like being replaced Our sagas are long of heroes battling the most monstrous of enemies and sometimes dies glories and then these young brothers of ours come fighting like Special ops and gunlines that is not our ways The sons of Leman fights in close not like sissies from far away. Ironically, I think most of the Primarch would find it easier to understand the original Primaris marines than their current standard SM sons and probably even Primaris created by the chapters later on ... The main reason being that almost all of the Unnumbered sons were drafted from people of the same era as the Primarch so their way of thinking and view of things would be closer to the Prmarchs. Add to that that in the Dark Imperium novel we see Space Wolf Primaris quite Space Wolfy ... the best I can describe it is a Sapace Wolf that was on a long term exchange at the Ultramarines ....

Funny thing is that the current(8th Ed) codex dark angels has Primaris librarians. All Librarians in the Dark angels are automatically inducted into the deathwing when they rank up from acolytum(Scrub, scouts with psy powers) to Lexicanum. So being in the DW they learn a fair bit about the Fallen and Luther. so how can they let primaris libby's know that if they didn't trust them? Bit of a paradox there me thinks. As for the mundane primaris we know that Master Belial has a liking for Hellblasters at least. I should imagine that the DA also would try to keep the primaris away from sensitive warzones or possibly throw the primaris into battles with hopeless odds. i would love to see the casualty figures for such warzones, bet the primaris have way higher casualty rates as they'd be used cannon fodder.

Dunno if they are *right* to be suspicious, but it is definetely a very realistic and sensible reaction and I wish a lot more chapters(like...almost all of them really, even some of the Ultramarines successors) reacted to Primaris this way. Also very in-character for the DA.

There were alot of mixed reactions across Chapters regarding the Primaris. Some were gateful about the reinforcement to their diminishing ranks, but others were rejecting the Primaris entirely for a multitude of reasons. Because they felt like they would be replaced or be it that the Primaris weren't trained by their Chapter and don't know their habits.

I think the number one problem with the Dark Angels is that they're not always written well. Too many chefs in the kitchen as it were. They make the DA seem like cartoonish villains (insert mustache twirl). Like when the DA ignored the distress call from that planet being invaded by orcs. They smoked some of the citizens and didnt really bother with the orcs at all. I think too many of these authors have drunk deep of the meme-aid.

1d4chan's page on the DA shares this opinion. The DA ARE loyal and fight for the Imperium. They are shady and secretive as fuck, sure and they've done a LOT of questionable if not outright immoral things to cover up The Fallen, but a lot of authors, like you said, have made the cartoonishly dickish about it. They don't like having to these things. And that scenario with the Orks and the civilians is tantamount to this meme getting out of hand. Even IF there was something Fallen related on the planet, a bunch of mortals that can't tell an Aquilla from a parrot, let alone a DA in Black and a DA in Green probably aren't worth them risking even more attention to themselves by wasting Imperial lives.

As a DA player, i share that opinion as well. The writers seem unable to create a story without involving the fallen. The DA have been defending the Imperium for ten millennia, and they can go centuries without even a single clue or rumor about the fallen, yet that has become their schtick. It is ridiculous. For a small example look at the game Space Hulk: Deathwing. It is a space hulk game, terminators vs genestealers. Sounds simple enough, but Gav Thorp was involved and he had to shove the fallen into it.

After the Horus Hersey Guilliman would be unwise to not spy on other chapters knowing all too well that it was his own brothers and their sons who betrayed the Emperor I beleive the primaris were to not only help the dwindling numbers of the loyalist chapters but yes also be the eyes and ears of the primarch they have had alot of years to potentially become treacherous not to mention Guilliman has met with Cypher already and may not know how deep the rabbit hole goes with the DA . I don't know if the Iron Hands primaris would be obsessed with augmentation like their counterparts. Also in one of the more recent books about the iron hands they find out that Mars has been controlling their history and chapter for centuries so I think they would be reluctant to accept the primaris from mars but on one hand they value strength sooooo. They are very martian in that aspect. But the adeptus astartes have several tech marines trained from mars as well. I wonder why the sons of the lion are so removed to the primaris in that aspect.

Is Guilliman spying on his fellow chapters? A: Of course he is. But the Primaris project is not a espionage effort in my eyes, remember, they were originally planned to be an intended upgrade to the emperor's design to continue the great crusade. Are the Dark Angels right to mistrust their primaris? A: They have every right, given the gravity of the truth of their time during the Heresy. Also, are there any primaris on the inner circle??? I haven't read much of the new lore.

I personally think that every move guilliman has made serves a secret purpose only known to a few. I think there was a reason he made the blood angel's chapter master Dante the warden of the imperium nihilus. What better way to keep someone like him preoccupied with duty and away from the goings on in the main imperium. I mean we're talking about an astartes who bested Skarbrand in single combat and cleaved him in two with his power axe. You dont wanna fuck with someone like that no matter who you are..even Guilliman.

I feel like the Iron Hands would accept the Primaris at first, but as the process of erasing their humanity goes on and on I feel like the Primaris will reject a lot of that. Making a rift of mistrust between the Primaris and veteran Iron Hands. I wouldn’t be surprised if down the line there was an All Primaris Iron Hands chapter that wasn’t so depressed with the death of Ferrus.

Roboute is facing threats greater, or even arguably equated to Chaos from within. Human nature, is unable to change when it has too and the Imperium in my mind is a product of their own experiences, naturally reasonable yet insane enough to laugh in the face of hope itself. For hope was what lead them all into their present state, to know harboring the kinder and more complex will to know when, or where to do good when everything is always unable to relate to their perception. The Inquisition is the worst and greatest of them all, if only in deed through actions without ironically including Roboute's own contingencies that will...inevitably shatter the Imperium, not because of disgust but of unrelenting sorrow knowing they'd become what was needed to become to have humanity just survive. Not bashing the morals, or lack of them in such a degree but with Xenos whose very existences were crafted, or forged to be what no natural being can ever convenience...how can humans even in vain nightmarish hope when their 'Leaders' like the Lion, Roboute, Dorn and those who are the best embodiment fail to fundamentally lower themselves because that's what a human has to do, if only in name to see everything and be capable to destroy the established chains locking those into humanity itself? The Lion from what I've read in the Horus Heresy from Descent of Angels, is simply when men give everything without question and ask for nothing in return...to have their purpose never forgotten, or willingly does not lie to say how it is. El'Johnson and Roboute are both fighting themselves, humanity, their enemies and their own kin because none of them save for a few know the the inevitable truth. Unless humans in this universe laugh in the faces of hell, or Chaos and hope? They will break under woeful experience for survival is what they're naturally incline to uphold, because it's human nature to resist and sneer against something telling you to change because it demands it. It's fascinating to my view, I love the Imperium, the Guard and seeing humans who we ourselves can easily envision contending with cosmic horrors that simply...exist without us, knowing or knowingly are ten steps ahead for several act we commit, or think as Roboute has learned all too well. The only questions I have are thus: "Will the Lion finally unveil the lie, or preserve the lie of his own doing because it's what made him understand that truth is stranger than fiction? Is the truth so simply taken, or upheld when it'd break a man's soul into pieces? Will a man accept the truth because he fundamentally believed in a beautiful lie, if only just to think it makes his world so much easier and clearer to live in? Or will they reveal their true natures...to destroy everything, if only to keep that lie in place?"
