In fact, HG Tannhaus was the most successful person in this series. 🔥🔥Without even realising he created the time machine to bring back his dead son alive. And no one in the original world knows this. Not even the man who made the time machine. 🔥🔥🔥🤯🤯🤯 Time machine was created so that time machine won't be created. 🤯🤯🤯

Just as a random insight I just got. Young Ulrich is showing the ultimate fate from the start. His leather jacket has the line "No Future" written on his back; and someone painted it on the concrete parking lot of the powerplant where we see middle age Helge trying to wash it off (to limited success), showing what the show is about as well: this world has no future because it should not exist in the first place!

Yeah. It's not even open to speculation. That guy wore No Future on his back for years, and then had none. He was an ass, but still, two different women came to get him out of an institution he had been in for years, and both women left him stuck in there. That is some depressing shit. Ok can you explain this logic mistake to me then? Why did Adam send Magnus and Franziska to alternate Martha to save him? Cuz the Jonas that doesnt get saved by Martha becomes Adam. The one that does get saved ends up getting killed by alternate Martha 2 (from the loophole). So how would Adam remember being saved by alternate Martha and sending his guys to make sure it happens again when his personal past did not contain being saved by any Martha?
@Skarrgan89
@Skarrgan89 4 жыл бұрын
@@andyreacts Because it had already happened. By the time that happened Adam had already sent Magnus and Franziska to get Martha 2, Martha 2 had already saved jonas and alternate Martha 2 was sent back to Eva's world, and Adam had already killed Martha 2 and realized it didn't work. No logical mistake at all.

This was the best ”Dark Ending Explained” I’ve seen so far! I like that you mention the theme of Ariadne and the St. Christoffer necklace. There’s a song during the montage where The Unnamed is conceived following the theme of the metaphor of the string of Ariadne. St. Christoffer protects travellers. We follow the medal back trough time where Egon gives it to Hannah, who then gives it to Helene, who loses it while fighting her travelling daughter in 1986. He did not protect a traveller, but the owner of the medal, Helene. Then Jonas finds it and gives it to Martha. Did he take it with him when his Martha was killed? My memories of Season 2 are fuzzy.

This is hands down the best tv series ever made, "The Leftovers" comes close, but this is *the best* in the *history* of *television* . Fight me. The writing, the tone, the acting, the complexity and thematic depth and ambition of its narrative, the soundtrack, the coloring.... everything screams perfect television. My favorite thing about the amazing ending, was that Jonas and Martha are actually a very good representation of human existence (personal reference here don't come at me) as they just cease to exist, as if their love was never really there, disappearing and fading into nothingness, with no one to remember it, or remember them; it's love for love's sake, and that is actually what human existence is really like: life for life's sake. One day, hopefully a long time from now, human life won't exist any longer, and there will be no one to remember it, everything we do and are exists and ends with the human race. People remember people and that is how they keep existing, but one day there won't be anyone to remember us anymore, nor what we did or who we were. It will all just turn quiet forever. I also love that "the quote" changed. At the lake it was " I think we are a perfect match" (ich finde wir beiden passen perfekt zusammen), and at the end it simply is "We are a perfect match" (wir passen perfekt zusammen), and they don't kiss, they hold hands, because he is not her Jonas and she is not his Martha. Everything went the way it was supposed to.

@OllyMorozova

But the origin world WAS first, so Katharina has always been named so. My understanding of it is that during creation of the two worlds some of the events from original world received different "causes", because there were so many new characters influencing the reality
@OllyMorozova
@OllyMorozova 4 жыл бұрын
I'm also thinking it might be similar to how our dreams are influenced by reality, so there might be real characters or pieces of real events all being part of some crazy story. Martha opens up a possibility that the two worlds are like a dream in the very end
@tritone11
@tritone11 4 жыл бұрын
Not likely. Katharina exists in the origin world, so her being called Katharina in the other worlds is an echo of that original reality. The REASONS for events change, but the events still happen. So she can be named Katharina for different reasons in different alternate realities.

the letter Clausen received in season 2 was written by 'no name' (Adam and eve's son). What is written in the letter is exactly the same that 'no name' said to 1888 TanHouse when they killed him. The letter is very important because it is the letter that makes Calusen go to Winden and makes Charlotte open the yellow barrils that make the apocalypse happen in Adam's world
@avajohnson6992
@avajohnson6992 4 жыл бұрын
I've been wondering about the purpose of Claussen and Boris/Aleksander myself and your theory makes the most sense. Now that I think about it, it's also when Claussen insists on questioning Regina again (with Charlotte having to drive him there) that she gives them Stranger Jonas' things which leads Charlotte to look deeper into the clues on her wall and things started to make sense for her. I think Claussen was meant to be a catalyst, and there would be no Claussen without Boris/Aleksander.

I was thinking on the finale and I realized that they didn't really destroyed anything. They just created another world and another loop. Because if Martha and Jonas stop the accident, they cease to exist and their worlds with them, but if they cease to exist then there's no one to stop the accident and Tannhaus still builds the time machine and accidentally creates the other two worlds. So, like in the schrödinger's cat theory, the two alternate worlds both exist and don't exist at the same time, and the origin world itself is split in two: in one world the accident happens and the time machine is built, in the other the accident never happens and the time machine is never built. And so the cycle continues. The beginning is the end and the end is the beginning.
@coisasdasuacabeca
@coisasdasuacabeca 4 жыл бұрын
If we throw the idea of the Schrodinger's cat into the mix, there's no need to worry about paradoxes. Jonas and Martha arrived at the original world at the precise moment when time stopped; so in this moment, all 3 realities exist in superposition with each other, but only in that moment, like the cat scenario where he is alive and death at the same time until we "measured it". But when they stop the accident, it's equivalent to "measure" a quantum particle, which makes the superposition collapses and the "particle" is now in one place only. Better saying, the original world is the cat, and they prevent the accident while the box was still closed. Preventing the accident is equal to open the box and seeing that the cat is, for example, alive. That's an explanation for the Big Bang as well. How can something be created out of nothing? In the quantum world, it's entirely possible. So, back to the finale, it's not a paradox; they both existed to prevent the accident, and never existed at the same time "because quantum mechanics said they could", hahauhaahaha

Those awkward family relations is actually one of the dilemmas that was meant to be tackled and resolved by this time travel series. That using time travel instead of making a paradise without suffering actually does the opposite: causing murders, messing up peoples lives, kidnappings and missing persons, unknowing consanguinous couplings, using this power for their own personal agenda, apocalypse, and so much death. It was meant to be messed up and dark to show what would happen if time travel were to exist. Adam and Eva also played an important role as they are both a product of this dilemma. That their desires is NOT meant to be glorified but rather have it seen as something not right, like every dark aspect of the show. I remember myself having this 'no God stop' feeling whenever they have sex or kiss after knowing they wer auntie and nephews. It was meant to be this way and it was perfectly executed. I also like how Jonas/Adam at first accepting their role in the cycle like not returning Mikkel to the real timeline and Adam doing some maintaining of the destiny, which in the end had some character development to finally wanting to end it all but dont know how, and their methods (Adam murdering Eva and vice versa) is actually all predestined... until Claudia did something and figured out how to undo everything, inspired by wanting to save her daughter die from cancer. It was really a well put series since episode one. Time travel in different timelines, the existence of quantum entanglement where both worlds collide, parallel worlds, etx. And it ended beautifully.

This is a great explanation! One thing I would correct regarding the motivations of Adam and Eva - Adam was hoping to destroy both worlds. He thought when he destroyed the origin that the world would end. For some reason he didn't realize that there was another pregnant Martha that would grow into Eva and perpetuate the cycle (the one taken by Bartosz before she could bring Jonas to alt-world.) Eva's plan was to continuously perpetuate the cycle, thereby "saving" both worlds. Her plan actually worked an infinite amount of times until Claudia figured out a way to simply remove the characters tied up in the knot and restore the original world.

I really like how these paradoxes work (the ones where you are you own grandmother). While two parallels worlds constantly creating a lot of time-paradoxes and imposible things, the origin world trying to be paradox free and created just main one. The origin world and subworlds even have different laws of physics. It's like the Universe itself trying to get rid of paradoxes. I love this time travelling concept that you can't time travel in the your real world, only in parallels worlds but they would be so messed up that the Universe do anything possible to prevent you from time travelling in the first place. p.s. Thank you for you deep analyz, it's been really intersing. And also thank you for the explanation why Regina didnt end up with Boris/Aleksander, it's make sense. I like the idea of angels which was was hinted at in the end. It was even mentioned by Tannhaus' daughter in law quoting his son. Jonas and Martha were like two angels that saved a family from dying in a car crash. Imagine that time travel always results in endless knots which eventually always get undone. In the end always something that goes wrong before the knot is formed is fixed by those trapped in the knot who appear to be angels which eventually dissolve into emptiness.

I have so many questions... - Why was Ines torn out from some of the pictures in season 1? - Peter's story is quite cryptic. For a brief moment I thought he might be Hanna's child in both realities. - What's the story behind Boris/Alexander and Clausen? Did Klaudia send a letter to Clausen or was it the Nameless Trinity? - What's the story for the spherical apparatus? We know that the original one was planted by Eva but who planted the round one? Adam? - What's the point of the chair? It makes completely no sense in both realities. - What's up with 1800s Tannhauses? The blind man seems very important yet his appearance is very brief and his father is on the photo of Sic Mundus from season 1. And it looks like he is killed in mirrored universe to fetch the "for Charlotte" clock. The show is sometimes so confusing that I probably misunderstood some events so please feel free to explain.

- I think Hannah ripped Ines out of the photo because she doesn't get along with her. When Hannah calls her in the first episode, she's angry at her so I assume their relationship was strained and she ripped her out after Michael died. - Peter was Helge's son from a woman named Ulla. The show doesn't go in too much detail about it but all we know is that he was raised by Ulla and only knew who his father was when his mother died, so he came to Winden to look for him. - It's not explained much but Alexander killed someone and then he met Regina and decided to stay in Winden because he fell in love with her. We're never told who wrote the letter so it could be anyone - The spherical apparatus is alt world's version of the time machine. We don't know what it's origin is but it could be similar to that of the time machine in Jonas's world. - The chair is just a prototype of a time machine. It's mostly important for setting up the course of action that leads Mikkel disappearing, etc - The Tannhauses are the one that founded Sic Mundus. They wanted to find a way to time travel and blind Tannhaus helped Stranger Jonas and the others

Another is that it was well-thought upon that almost all the aspects of time travel is tackled and put together in this series: So what will happen if time travel exist and: 1. You met the murderer of your relative as a child. 2. Choose to live in the past and disappear from your own timeline. 3. Prevent a disaster before it happens. 4. Commit a crime in the past. 5. You meet your younger self And many many more. Lol.

Great recap and explanation! So many knots to untangle. I absolutely loved the full circle of Dark, but a few things will continue to haunt my quest to know everything... I have to assume Jonas’ mutation into Adam physically was left on the cutting room floor. I have a feeling it just wasn’t shaping up to the quality of the show’s impeccable visuals so it was cut, and we get the slightly earlier version of Adam we see in the show. I wonder how Helge (being as odd as he is in both split timelines) manages a relationship or semblance of one to birth Peter. Lastly (in this rant anyway) do we ever see that OG Hannah isn’t both Hannah’s?

At the end when they are sitting at the dinner table, Hannah speaks of a dream that she had the night before. She tells the guests that she saw in her dreams the destruction of the town and everybody dying. When asked what name she will give her unborn child, she says Jonas. So it starts all over. But the town will not be destroyed by a nuclear plant because that does not exist but still some form of disaster will occur.

This was a great review. Here are some interesting thoughts I have: A. Really appreciate how they have used the triquetra not just for time but for space as well. Almost like a fractal, which is pretty much consistent with the theme of symmetry in this show. B. I found it very interesting that the only way the family of Tannhaus could have survived is through the creation of time-travel which allowed Jonas and Alt-Martha to warn them. However, if they were saved, Tannhaus wouldn't have had any reason to invent time-travel, causing his family to be in that accident. This paradox is pretty much a call-back to the Schrödinger's cat experiment wherein both of these states (creation of time-travel thus saving the family and no time-travel thus accident happened) are existing at the same time. I think it takes a very bright and artistic mind to come up with this masterful story C. As for Silja, I think it was only heavily implied that Stranger-Adam sent her into the future (as she's not right here, in this time)
@mistershax9478
@mistershax9478 4 жыл бұрын
for B. I understood it as Tannhaus created the 2 worlds accidentally, splitting up his own world quite some time after his family died, making his own world kind of "stop". That would also explain Hannah's dream she mentions at the dinner table in the end, about everything going to black and nothing existing anymore. It then took the 2 worlds and especially Claudia to solve and erase themself while saving Tannhaus family back at the moment before they had their accident. So basically the origin world ended with Tannhaus attempt to bring them back until the 2 new worlds solved themself and then the old world could start over, but with the Tannhaus family alive and without any further time-travel.

I have a major doubt or confusion regarding the show when Martha gets the cut while entering the powerplant at epi-3 24:05 when Jonas tells Martha that the Martha (who brought him to this world) had the cut too, but I went back to season two last scene and to my surprise the cut wasn't there on the right side of her cheek. We see old Adam send Silja back in time to 1890 to meet Bartosz and have his kids (and keep him there); but we dont see where he (transition Adam) takes here before that. Must be sometime between 2020 (after the apocalypse) and 2052 when she greets young Jonas with her "welcome to the future" line. I dont think we really need to know to what time specifically it was. You can guess what year it was based on her age; but she does not do much apart from gain some rank in the Sic Mundus cult of Elizabeth there. Maybe around 2030ish?

I’m guessing she’s supposed to be around Bartosz’ age when the travels back, so perhaps 18 something? She looks like she’s about 7 when Hannah brings her there the first time. Wonder if she remembers her first encounter with older Bartosz when she goes back there? So I think Adam places her under Elisabeth’s wings sometime after she’s lost her family, in the 2040is.

Awesome review! I'm amazed at little details I missed even when I was hyper focused on everything. Like the worlds and the triquetra. Also, young Charlotte kept questioning the possibility of bringing people back from the day. I assumed she meant her parents but I now think it was a clue to the conversations she was having with Tannhaus. And was he really crazy. But we didn't really have a concrete reason to focus on him at the time. Great writing.

I realized 2 things: 1) In the origin world, there is a chance that Bartoz could be born. As his father Alexander/Boris Niewald was never part of the family tree/knot, he would still exist in the origin world, meet with Regina and have Bartoz. This would mean only Bartoz can be born again in the origin world. 2) Even though I like Magnus and Franziska, they actually have no real contribution in the 2 worlds. They have no children together that will contribute in the family tree for creating their own existence, and the time older Magnus and Franziska saves alternate Martha before the apocalypse, it could've been done by just about anyone, Elisabeth or Charlotte or even Agnes could have gone saved Martha. No need for Magnus and Franziska. It is disappointing for me because they spent much time on their characters in season 1 and 2, but ultimately have no real contribution. Let me know what you guys think? My theories might be wrong.

Chances are slim, though. As said, Ulrich doesn't texist, so him and his future wife can't bully Regina, thus he doesn't need to save her from them. There's also no power plant, where he would start to work and her mother would be the boss, so him and Regina wouldn't probably meet that often.

I took it like.. Jonas was always going to be Hannah’s firstborn son. Even if he doesn’t have the same father. Biologically speaking, sure it’s a stretch to consider but so was most of this show. But Dark pulled off its immersion. Some things will always happen. The show has a lot to say about fate.. and how an ending is a beginning. Everyone will somehow get another chance, Martha will meet Jonas, though things will be different just like the Alt-world.

The only thing that is not really conclusive is the thing with Schrödinger's cat. So that time suspended during the apocalypse for "a few miliseconds" (again: time cannot suspend for a unit of time, but ok) and causality with it. So there were two Jonas and two Marthas. In the series itself, this was called a loophole, and it was. It was a necessity so that a change could be introduced in a reasonably logical way. Otherwise everything would be fixed and the protagonists would never have been able to dissolve the two worlds! This could also be the place where the timeline is repeated. Only during the apocalypse, for those few milliseconds, can changes be made. One can do two mutually exclusive things at the same time. That makes for the dual existence of humans. Only as soon as they leave the (I call it) "causality gap", they are part of causality again.

Yes, this aspect makes zero sense. Two realities, yet alt world Martha is able to meet Stranger Jonas in his original reality? And how does the actual 'time stops' mechanic work? We never *see* time stop, we just see stuff happen. Both things feel like a big handwave to allow for change to be mind within what had been clearly established as an immutable self-consistent time loop.

So here is a brain melter - when Tannahaus accidentally creates the two split universes, one would assume they would have a common shared past up until the split point in 1986 and then diverge form there, but we can clearly see that their pasts are very different as far back as 1888. So, if the pasts before 1986 are indeed different, how far back would these universes go? If 1888, why not 1288 or 88 or 1888 BC, do these worlds have a past back to the beginning of time? the series kind of implies that the events that keep looping are only focused around the existence of Jonas/Marth and Adam/Eva, but that really can't be the case, simply form the fact that the world they live in must have taken a billion years to form.
@Mr_gepardas
@Mr_gepardas 4 жыл бұрын
What I find quite interesting and mind-bending is that in the original world Tannhaus builds a time-machine, because of his knowledge and determination to bring his family back. In the split-worlds he makes it all thanks to the bootstrap-paradox (even though not really sure how he makes it in Eva's world, they don't really cover how their time/world travel machine actually comes to existence, but can guess it is most likely made by Tanhaus, again all thanks to bootstrap paradox), so in a way his path was already predetermined as the person who will make a working time-machine. On further note, I think that the Adam's and Eve's world has not really disappeared, or the loop for them is still going, never ending, just on a different split. As this season introduced not only traveling between the worlds but also allowing 2 outcomes at the same time. Martha takes Jonas to her world / she travels with Bertosz. So we have at least 2 original worlds one, where the knot is broken (the show's ending) and one where the knot is still there. I think this is strongly hinted when Jonas and Martha appear in the original world and both remember that they saw each other as kids. Which would imply that this already has happened, and they did not disappear, they failed to break it, and maybe even were the cause of Tanhaus son and his family dying. Or maybe there is only one original world, that was stuck in a loop and it took them thousands or millions of tries until Claudia finally realized what was actually going on, and what steps to take to exit the loop. Almost like some sort of Machine-learning algorithm. Kind of like that Doctor Who episode "Hell Bent" where the same loop and actions are repeated, millions/billions of times, taking away at the wall bit by bit, just to exit the loop. As we see on the last episode how White Devil is talking to younger self giving some details, before travelling to meet her father one last time, before being shot by Noah. So it could be that at that point she always gives herself just enough detail, to repeat the loop, but also figure out just a little bit more, how to play the game that Adam and Eve have no clue how to play.

Couldn't she save tanhaus' family since she already traveled there instead of waiting for adam and eve? Any idea what happened in origin world after tanhaus turns it on ? We aren't told if he does use the device to time travel. And wouldn't it make sense that he'd be the one crisscrossing all three worlds instead of the main characters?

1. Claudia speaks to Adam explains this, then goes back in time to get killed by Noah. 2. Everytime during the apocalypse time stops for a brief minute. During these changes in the cycle can be made. Small changes can change the total outcome. Claudia over many cycles uses this loophole to manipulate herself into finding out about original world. 3. Claudia says that when tannhaus switches on the time machine, the original worls gets toyed into two, aka prime world and alt world we see. Hope i made sense.

Adam knew about the two world's but he didn't knew about quantum entanglement. He only knows one path where Martha 2 can be brought in his world so he can destroy the origin.

Cool video! The part with Katharina in the lake totally got me. Spooky! I would really like to watch your review of Jonas/Adam storyline. I guess I need to rewatch season 3 since I am since missing the part becoming Stranger, I understand it happened in the future with Claudia, but there he got after giving Michael idea to suicide. Then they left with claudia, he come back to the day of apocalypse to get Claudia to bunker and in one reality Jonas get killed by Martha, in other he stay in the house, so I guess he dies during the apocalypse, but nothing much is seen (or did I miss something?) and in third possibility he goes to the origin world. But that's still young Jonas. Then he is in the future and knows about Martha's death and became Stranger but when did he got there? Also if there is a loop, how will Adam die? I guess I just miss some sentence. I have fastwatched season 3 in 1 day. :D Also how come he travelled to the future touching young Helge? Shouldnt the swap be involving only their timelines? Since Elisabeth took Charlotte into hers? But I guess the portal just take you to the end of timeline. I need some clarity or my head will just explode :D

Absolutely loved it made my weekend. Beautiful the passion between Martha and Johnas was So real it has to be said the emotions each actor put into One scene alone... was sometimes mesmerising. I think u got it right Chris it has no flaws in this world . Alas in an other it will. Germanic. Good review 💯💚

Thank you very much for this video! This is the first time I really understood the plot👏 I tried watching other videos that made me even more confused than before🤦‍♀️ I think Dark is best watched three series one after the other otherwise a lot of things get forgotten and it’s hard to catch some interesting facts.

I totally agree with watching it all together, you really get to see how they're connected and pick up on smaller items. I'm excited to rewatch the series again and see what all I missed!

My biggest takeaway was that Boris wouldn't protect Regina, because there was nothing to protect. So they wouldn't have hooked up. Regina was only in the woods because of Ulrich.

Just finished the series finale, and it was amazing. To me, the final theme of the show is not as nihilistic as it claimed to be. The answer to the question the show asks of "Is there free will or are we doomed to repeat the cycle" and the answer is "kind of." We have free will but we'll repeat cycles because we can't escape our emotions. It splits the difference. Genius.

I think Claudia is Ariadne - she solved the knot (arguably, depend on how you think Dark really has ended) and led both Jonas and Martha out of labirynth to original world.

Hi, l really enjoyed your video. I just wanted to add that l thought from the beginning of the series that there were 3 worlds based on the intro. I was on a Facebook group and when l posted this one of the people from the series made a post.

Just hallucinations. Probably because of their connection that they look similar

I always thought of it as a vision or hallucination, so it was strange that Martha had a similar one, but of herself instead. I think the showrunners just wanted to show us the mirroring of the tho characters and worlds. But there was no dead parent for Martha to see, which I always thought was the logic behind Jonas seeing Michael (several times).

I like how they compare the 2 worlds with cancer. The complex time loop that they were trying to escape from is like a metaphor for cancer that some people try to find a cure.
