I know many people have dissed it, but I actually found the first season to be very entertaining. The black-and-white cinematography gave a mysterious look to the show.

Sadly..After 1795, Victoria Winters storyline became more & more watered down. Kathryn Leigh Scott, Lara Parker & Nancy Barrett ALL got more interesting, vital stories during this time period. But, I agree that MOLTKE was charasmatic & wonderful as VICTORIA and truly was key to the first 1 year and a half.

We loved your voice Alexandra. You had such an on screen presence. To hear it once more as we did long ago brings back such good memories. Thank you

I absolutely loved this series...particularly when Victoria Winters got transported back in time to the OLD HOUSE and into the history of Barnabas Collins and his love, Josette! WOW! Such a fantastic plot!! Victoria was always so beautiful and had fabulous HAIR!!

I always loved the first episodes. The outdoor shots were fantastic and made it more real to me as a child and even now! I liked the hint at supernatural goings on at Collinwood by all the locals Victoria met in the beginning.

I liked the outdoor shots too, but they proved to be very costly. The actors, cameramen and producers had to travel all the way to Connecticut, Rhode Island or Upstate New York (depending on the scene) just to film a few seconds of action. They dropped this after the first season due to expenses.

So much going on in the first year. I found Bill Malloy's ghost getting conjured up while Victoria was trapped in the upstairs room very eerie and scary. Even more scary is when Matthew went insane and tied up poor Vicky, only to be scared to death by the ghosts in the Old House. LOVING Laura and the Phoenix. Very scary! Kudos to Ms. Moltke! LOVE her!

I am re-watching the entire series just now and Bill's ghost just showed up 2 episodes ago! I am now on episode 88, Season 3 Ep 18 where Victoria is trying to explain seeing Bill Malloy's ghost to Elizabeth and Carolyn.

The first year was so different in that its target audience were the housewives interested in soap operas with a bit more intrigue and mystery. Even the background music was more typically soap opera style. But the ratings remained low, and that was when the producers decided to go the supernatural route (complete with the macabre background music) while targeting the school kids audience. With regard to the supernatural effects, they started off low key (the ghost of Josette walking around the grounds of the Old House), but then turned wilder and wilder.

That's not what I remember about the background music. The background music was consistant through out the whole show, even the beginning, which gave it it's errie feeling. Unusual because this was a time soaps tend to use piano or organ music for their background music.

@@wiseguymaybe I was talking about the very early episodes before the show went supernatural. It sounded more like Another World or As The World Turns music.

@@nassauguy48 Actually this was what As The World Turns music sounded like during that time period kzbin.info/www/bejne/roLEZJ-BeK9lY7s&ab_channel=ClassicSoapOperas and this was the very first episode of Dark Shadows kzbin.info/www/bejne/npepZIKDabGUf6s&ab_channel=CynthiaRobersonv=hfF3OM4LaII&ab_channel=CynthiaRoberson And that music stayed consistant throught out it's run. Please understand, I'm not trying to be a know it all or a troll, but our memories play tricks on us as we grow older.

one thing of what David Collins inspires me is that even without any schooling, he's still very well educated, intelligent prominent proficient and very well matured.

According to fan literature, and I think at some point in the show, it was revealed that David had spent some time away at a boarding school, and one of the DS novellas said that it was a military academy. Another version showed that there had been a previous governess to Vicky, and that she pretty much left because David was a handful. But he also came from elite stock, and so those genes were handed down to him. And, remember, his mother was a phoenix!

Hulu is now running many episodes of the "Dark Shadows" series...but the very early episodes of the first year are missing. This is a nice introduction to the series...and fills in some information not provided in the episodes available on Hulu. Thank you for this upload. ~RED ☮♥♫

I love the early episodes, they really ground the more adventuresome later years. Such a strange editing decision to use that creepy actor who played Sam Evans for about 5 minutes before being replaced! or to show Maggie Evans with a blonde wig which she wore for exactly one episode! no matter, Dark Shadows will always be my 2nd favorite soap opera (sorry, nothing ever matched the fast pace and wonderful Henry Slesar writing of The Edge of Night)

First time I noticed Mathew Morgan was not Thayer David in the early episodes. I was aware of replacements for Burke, Sam, the Sheriff, doc Woodard though...

I liked the original Matthew better than his replacement, but my God that first Sam Evans was an awful actor! fortunately they dumped him after only a handful of shows.
