Willie was perfect because he had no ego. He was Barn's slave but he always remained himself, always respectful of his boss but he kept his humanity, his caring for others and sanity.

@ Susan C. John Karlen's Willie Loomis character was one of my favorite characters on "Dark Shadows" as well. I have always found it humorous that his most well-known line of dialogue , which the writers of the show were constantly having his character Willie Loomis say is, "Mr. Collins, he ain't here.....I don't know where he went......I don't know when he'll be back" whenever someone came to the Old House to see Barnabas either during the daytime or just before sunset!

Fantastic actor John Karlen he was/is totally captivity all his Classic charactor Roles on DARK SHADOWS: Willie Loomis (he was not totally Cowardly; he stood up to Barnabas Collins many times), Karl Collins (the Jokester, so flighty-funny..."when he saw Quentin as the zombie/looking ghostly..."just incredible Acting!! Made one shiver from head to toe), the dashing Desmond Collins (Scary/creepy, bringing that disembodied head of Judah Zachery to The COLLIN'S Mansion Estate) in Parallel time, is one of "many" fav DS's Classic Storylines.

The interesting thing is that of the 5 major stars on Dark Shadows: Jonathan Frid (Barnabas Collins), Joan Bennett (Elizabeth Stoddard Collins), Louis Edmonds (Roger Collins), Grayson Hall (Dr.Julia Hoffman) and David Selby (Quentin Collins), it seemed to me that Jonathan Frid relied upon the teleprompter the most. I rarely saw the other 4 major stars of that show glancing towards the teleprompter to remember their lines of dialogue. It is amazing that they all didn't rely on the teleprompter a lot because they had to memorize so many lines of dialogue for each individual episode of the show and they had less than 24 hours to memorize their lines. By the way, when I refer to those 5 actors and actresses as the stars of the show , that is not intended at all as a slight against the other well-known actors and actresses that appeared on a regular basis on that show such as Lara Parker (Angelique), Katherine Leigh Scott (Maggie Evans), Nancy Barrett (Carolyn Stoddard), David Henessey (David Collins) and Thayer David (Prof. Elliot Stokes), Jerry Lacy (Reverend Trask), etc.

Not to slight the other cast members because I loved everybody (with the possible exception of Sarah Collins!), but John Karlen was the only one to totally inhabit their character. He never seemed like he was “acting”. And to hear him talk about how easy it was for him (because he only worked 1-2 days per week and didn’t have that many lines), makes me appreciate even more what a truly great actor he was. And the only one who would later go on to win an Emmy!

Karlen wasn't so much an ''actor'' he just let lose and became Willie. Frid on the other hand A-C-T-E-D in every sense of the word. I can't quite put it into words like Frid would, but Jonathan Frid was the consummate actor. His face, his expressions kept you riveted on HIM in every scene.

Jonathan's facial expressions, the nuances, and his speech, diction, pauses, passions ... just all phenomenal at conveying the story.
