I found Sam's interviews the most informative of all. Writers are the most crucial element to any good story.

Grayson's over acting was one of the great charms of her character and the show.

I Never thought Grayson overacted. She had Genuine dramatic skill... I think today's actresses are boring as hell.

I guess being a good story teller is part and parcel of being a good writer. The dialogue on Dark Shadows was so elegant and refined, and these anecdotes are wonderful. Especially the one about his wife looking like Lillian Gish in reaction shots and the one about Joan Bennett being so grateful to be asked to wear period costumes again. An interesting, talented man.

My understanding is that getting Sam Hall on the writing staff was also one of the best things that happened to Dark Shadows - that and getting Jonathan Frid as Barnabas Collins. :-)

Jonathan Frid was getting tired of carrying the show, so he asked for a "foil" that would take some of the pressure off of him. Enter David Selby. Fact.

There was no way that Dan Curtis could write the Dr. Julia Hoffman character (played wonderfully by Grayson Hall) out of the show by having Barnabas Collins or some other character in "Dark Shadows" kill Hoffman because the Julia Hoffman character was too integral and important a part of the show, even if writing that character out of the show would have, as Sam Hall suggests, "open up so many other doors" to new storylines. Dr. Hoffman's unspoken love for Barnabas was a key appealing element of the show. Also the camaraderie between Julia Hoffman and Prof. Timothy Stokes (played by the excellent character actor Thayer David) was so appealing.

@4:49. Sam: "She would look like Lilian Gish!!" What a great line from Sam Hall. These are great interviews!

he looks like my grandfather. but he also favors Alastair Cooke and Alfred Hitchcock in looks, in intelligence, as well educated and in professionalism of a proficient person.

I wish they would stop remaking this show- the magic was the company of actors that the genius of dan curtis cast, and, the spontaneity of the daily production

They should make a movie akin to “My Favorite Year” about the making of this show. 😊

@@marilynwillett804 And I believe Quentin at one time knew also in 1897 but I'm pretty sure he still knew when he came to the present time as well. Professor Stokes is a character who was always very close to almost knowing but really never found out.

Grayson Hall was like the worst student from the William Shatner School Of Acting. "Josette -- must -- leave -- this place."
