I have more hours in DS2 than any other game in the series (Including Sekiro and Elden Ring: BB I'd have more hours in if I ever had a PS4/5) and yeah, it's overhated. It's super different and the stamina management and ADP sucks but it did so much innovation and had so many neat pieces of gear to mess around with. It's fun to boot it back up every now and then and see what wacky build I come up with next. A lot of them are viable too. Poison/Toxic works on a lot of bosses and nothing is better than seeing a unprepared player just melt from toxicity after you apply it.

I like DS2 but the hate is definitely understandable. Combat can be kinda janky. A good amount of bosses are really basic and straightforward. Your dodge having to be upgraded with your other stats and hollowing are a little annoying. It’s definitely an acquired taste but it’s still solid.

I think Adaptability was not seen positively in the context of the Dark Souls series, but it would have been fine in other contexts for sure. A pure case of wrong audience. RPGs having a stat for how good you can dodge is super plausible, even in an action RPG. But the souls series so far was used to having that "stat" be managed by encumbrance (Endurance, Equipment Weight and the occasional Ring) instead of Adaptability. The change made people upsetti spaghetti.

same, thought long and hard about it. i just like the variety and unique combat styles and possibilities a lot. there are also quite a lot of different paths to go down and although they eventually all converge each gives unique items and loot and options. there is so much more choice in the first half of the game that are all fun and unique routes to go down. wanna make a PVP'er? get to bastille for the better blacksmith and agape ring from straid, clear the executioner for the covenant. could even go to earthen peak for a good poison build. i could make hundreds of unique fun builds like this in my head. and Darksouls 2 really rewards you for knowing its ins and outs. lots of hidden walls or shortcuts you can use, lots of hidden enemies. i still had a moment last week where someone killed a invisible enemy and i went: WTF that was there?! after like 1200 hours of gameplay if not more, i still learn new things every once in a while. but mostly i like its PVP the best, movement and camera isn't optimal like in DS3 its a bit clunky and slow. but rolling and estus are actually risks and investments, my opponent doesn't win because i invaded and he has 10 estus and i don't. because rolling away actually eats stamina and actually costs something. because armor and resistances, poise etc actually feel like they matter. they don't in the other games, because healing and rolling are so free. in DS2 i actually have to think and strategize to use my equipment to the best i can. because every knife throw matters, because having a spear and thus kiting using my optimal distance is most effective. in other DS games? nah, just roll.

Ive played all of the Dark Souls games at this point, Elden Ring and Kings Field included, and ive got to say that Dark Souls 2 is my absolute favorite out of all of them. @@TheHolyBongWater none of the areas after O&S (aside from dlc) were actually hard tho. Maybe new londo. They just weren’t fun to go through, they felt basic and lifeless. Ds1 is by far the easiest souls game, all the enemies are slow and predictable, aside from artorias, he was actually hard.

Dark souls 2 was my favorite dark souls game , definitely over hated

While the game has it's issues, it was a fantastic experience and a fun game at the end of it all :)
