Another thing I really like about DS2's enemies is the fact that pretty much all of them have a unique (although sometimes limited) moveset. Look at basic unarmed hollows in Things Betwixt, Forest of the Giants, Lost Bastile and Huntsman's Copse. IIRC they all have different animations for walking and attacking. As somebody who played DS2 first, I gotta say I was a bit disappointed when almost all hollows throughout DS3 were just reskins of each other.

Huh, what a weird way to pick on Ds3. Ds3 has way more variety in ennemy moveset than Ds2. The base hollows you're talking about are recurring enemies in similar areas (Lothric Castle and surroundings), not reskins. The only reskins of them in the game are found in the Cathedral of the Deep, which offers a dozen new and unique ennemies on top of these. Ds2 ennemy patterns all boil down to the classic "swipe, swipe, thrust/long swipe" combo or some variation of it, plus one "rush" attack that will track the player until it has connected/been dodged, no matter the size, weapon or lack thereof, of the ennemy. I don't see much variety when Velstadt's moveset is basically the same repetitive thing as your basic hollow's, except this time, he's 4 meters tall and wields a hammer.... Compare him with Dragonslayer Armour, and you'll see where I'm getting at.

His experimentation on undead, hell just the way all the cultures made use of undead, the giants, the abominations, the unique far off cultures like the varangians, the flexiles, the golems, the dark daughters, all of it was just completely ignored. It's a shame the reason why Dark Souls 2 turned out the way it did was because of an extremely hellish development cycle. The original director, Tomohiro Shibuya, screwed up a lot of things before Yui Tanimura replaced him. Tanimura, of course, not only had to clean up the mess Shibuya made. He also had to finish designing the game before mirror-polishing it entirely; all of this he had to do when the deadline was getting tight. Dark Souls 2 may have not been the Souls game we all wanted. But it is the Souls game that had survived miraculously from an incredibly disastrous development period.

The Concept art for these enemies look really great. I feel like The incredibly dark color palettes used on the In-game models blur alot of the fine details and make them look blobbier than they actually are.

Dev team really looked at the Ashen Warrior concept and said "nope, I don't think so".

I wish they had stuck to the concept art more directly. The first mad warrior design looked amazing on the page with the solid mouth piece. I still don't understand why the Manikin mask is missing as well. It's such a mystery to me why it's missing to this day.
@red_menace1829 Жыл бұрын
You're kidding right? It's literally been discussed why lol. Some other game at the time had a similar looking design and since it came out before DS2 fromsoft changed it for copyright reasons.
@exbelion3543 Жыл бұрын
The developers really took liberties by making as twice as much enemies compared to the first game and with more variety. Among my favorites are the half dragon undeads with a miserable face, the Imperfect Ones with their horrendous hitboxes, the parasite spiders and their hosts, Demon of Song, Prowling Magus even if his boss battle is shit, Suspicious Shadows and all of Alva's twisted creations

The great thing about top notch Art and Design is that no matter how old a game gets it would still look great. Tech wise it might reveal it's age but it's never a tall hurdle to get over. When you look at Sekiro or Elden Ring, they're not the most extravagant looking games on a technical level but art and visuals more than makes up for it.

DS2's character design is a shame, really. These artists are obviously very skilled and their work is incredible, but it's let down either by poor modelling/texturing, bad placement, bad animation/pose direction, or all of the above. I don't mean to disrespect the 3d/texture/animation artists, but they should have gotten better direction or more time to work. There's also a lot of designs that are _good_ but not quite there. I wholeheartedly believe that a lot of DS2's character design could have been amazing if many of the designs just went through a few more iterations with more focused direction. Not to mention the graphical downgrades that had to be made that can make the models look worse.

Interesting, I had never noticed the Prowling Magus has the same pale green skin as the Grave Wardens and Royal Sorcerer Navlaan. Is there a version of the Magus without its helmet, or can you camera zoom in to the mask to see if it has the same red eyes as Navlaan?

The enemy designs and variation in ds2 is just so freaking majestic, even the enemies look like they're long lost relics of a bygone era.

Every DS2 enemy was terrifying….. because you always had to face like 6 of em at one time. Those enemies were really on JJK timing with how they never have 1 on 1s.

Now that I really look back at my time playing DS2, I realize that I never really got a good look at most of the enemies. Almost everything from that time is a bit of a blur in that regard, and its weird seeing them so clearly now...
@griffin1095 Жыл бұрын
Cause the game doesn’t usually do a great job of showing them, either due to smokey effects or how small the enemies are. That’s why most enemies in the other games are bigger than the player, they’re more imposing, bigger targets to hit, and you can see their designs better.
@jongaraizar5798 Жыл бұрын
Yeah they generally all end up looking like lumps of grey with a few spikes that scream or moan. One of the biggest issues with the game.

@Touma13411 ай бұрын
Man the concept art is great on these but some of the in game models don't do them justice. Mad warrior in concept looks sick but the in game design isn't as sleek and they added skull teeth that gives sit more of a generic look.
