Here is the thing, I don't think Sulyvahn was a follower of Aldrich at all, his aim was World conquest and he was just using these clerics of the Cathedral of the Deep. I've been watching these videos about what was lost in translation from the original Japanese text, the text in Sulyvahn Soul implies that he left Gwyndolin for Aldrich to eat but in the original Japanese there is no implied intention, he imprisoned Gwyndolin and then Aldrich came and ate him but that was not planned. And then there is Archdeacon McDonnell, who is locked inside a well being watched by 2 of Sulyvahn Beasts, why he's there? Because Sulyvahn didn't want any true believer mucking up his plans, he was just using them and since McDonnell was a true follower of Aldrich he had to be taken out. But why he decided to associate with those guys at all? Maybe they were just a pliable bunch, but I really think it's because all these things associations with the Abyss, Sulyvahn was still using the power of the Profaned Flame and working with the deranged survivors or the Profaned Capital, he needed a way to introduce his Abyss touched Sorceries and Pyromacies to the the Way of White and the Clerics of the Deep were just the ones more open to these Dark practices, what happened with Aldrich was ancient history at this point so Sulyvahn knew he could use them. And then Aldrich was raised by the Bell of Awakening and ruined everything for Sulyvahn, which is why when we find him he seems to have Hollowed.

> what the word pontiff means, which is simply: the pope (paraphrased) Actually pontiff is derived from Pontifex, meaning "bridge". The Romans had a Pontifex Maximus, an office for the man who would serve as a "bridge to the gods" . So Pontiff in this context could be any title that relates to Suly being a bridge between worlds, (possibly being the one who controls access to the world of Irithyl, or something more abstract) not necessarily head of the Cathedral of The Deep

Somewhere, there's evidence that there's a distinction. I think it's that Abyss is humanity gone rampant, and the Deep is, imo, the accumulation of soul dregs. "Human dregs are the heaviest part of the soul, and sink to the lowest depths imaginable" "He [Archdeacon McConnell] delighted in the Cathedral's stagnating souls" I think he delights in the stagnating souls, because stagnation of souls means that their dregs fall as sediment, forming the bedrock of the world. I believe that one day, the accumulation of dregs will cause them to overflow onto the earth, drowning it in the dregs, a dark, heavy sea of the densest part of a soul.

The Pontiff had his hands (eyes) in everything in DS3. Consider the locations of the Outrider Knights, the regular ones as well as Vordt and the Dancer. His Coup in Irythyl, alliance with Aldritch, and influence on Lothric... it's no wonder he was originally considered to be the final boss of the game. His eyes seem to have a similarly corrupting affect as Aldritches Ruby and Sapphire rings interesting enough. It's also interesting to me to see him in his 3 stages, as I call it, how he looks early on, coming from the painted world, as depicted on his doll, he wears a headwrap similar to pyromancers.. How he's depicted in Lothric atop the fountain, having discovered the profaned flame and wielding only the profaned greatsword. Finally wielding both profaned greatsword and the greatsword of judgement having overthrown Gwyndolin, solidified his power in Irythyl. I would like to point out the use of Giant Slaves in the Deep. It's actually unique to the Cathedral and the only place-time we see slaves like this in the souls universe is in DS2. I know we hate to consider DS2 lol but this may be significant. They also seem to be GIANT Giants which I never hear anyone addressing...

I think when you talk about the Deep and stagnation you have to mention Shintoism's relationship with pollution and water. Much like Bloodborne while there's lots of use of western iconography and references (especially religious) Miyazaki clearly doesn't mind mixing it with Eastern philosophy and religious beliefs. Sekiro carries on with many of these themes without the western influence and so it becomes much clearer to see.

Hey Ashen, any theories on why hollows become trees like near the tower on the wall bonfire?
@Lord_Raptor4 жыл бұрын
I always assumed since at the end of the game everything seems to be converging in on its self to begin anew. ( Kind of like DS2 when it says "All this will play out again") the hollows are reverting back to arch trees and the pilgrim butterflies are reverting to dragons. All the ash that surrounds the end of the game hardens into the "grey crags" that DS1 talks about. Pretty much the world is "resetting" to its original form so all of it can "play out again". Edit: Also, you fight the Soul of Cinder in what I believe to be the arch tree where the first flame came into existence.

Personally I pegged Sulyvahn as Ciaran’s son Also, I’d also like to point out that in the Ringed City it is implied that the Dark undergoes states of matter as it ages. The new, recent Dark is gaseous, as seen with Wolnir, and is known as the Abyss. Older Dark condenses into liquid, the Deep. Finally, the oldest, most ancient Dark crystalizes, seen in the formations in the Ringed City swamp, or on the body of Midir

+Monocle Squid I both agree with you, and think there's slightly more. Like how Manus was a bundle of tortured rage, and his humanity does seem to take certain forms. If anything, I'd say it behaves liquidly when puppeteered by him. Like rain, like a splash of water, like a ripple for the closing in... Perhaps it's an expression of his sadness? Rain is sad, the splash is like pushing away, and the closing in ring I is like the humanity is giving him a hug. The daughters/shards of Manus all bear powers that correlate to the emotion they have/are, Nashandra of Want, curses you and curse is strongly tied to desire to move forward and Want to continue, Elanna with rage that constantly seethes as poison, or explodes as fire, Nadalia, the lonely (by my reading), broke her soul to further bind her body in the form of ash to Brume Tower, her ash being a representation of her smothering loneliness, her flames as frustration at even being too lonely to reach Brume Tower in time for the reign of the Old Iron King, and the FUGS is an object of both ash, and the notion of solidarity, as it was a gift to the also-lonely Raime, a gift of solidarity, hence it is as solid as stone. Also that her idols heal and protect him and those of the Iron King, and that her chime boosts faith, which I think represents her fealty like this, is like her flames and ash are warming and protective here. These are all powers wielded by beings made of pure Dark, just varying amounts and committed to different purposes. I was going to go into how Alsanna's ice is fit for purpose, and my personal thought that the Light miracles of Londor and Gertrude fit the role of Dark miracles that are kind of Light-friendly, like ones developed to not directly use the intimidating Dark in the same way as classic Dark, and reach a wider audience, but I've been writing this for a while and want it to go through and sleep.

What's the connection between the Deep and the Abyss, and why do human dregs look like deflated humanity sprites? Another thing I've noticed its that the Embers in ds3 take the same general shape as the humanity sprites/human effigies, but on fire. Maybe the Embers are remnants of the Humanity fed to the Bonfires/First Flame throughout the eons? And maybe the human dregs are weakened versions of Humanity that was in the process of "drying up", like the Pygmies' Dark Soul. I think the connection between the human dregs and the embers have some support, given that an Aldritch Faithful can only pillage these dregs from Embered undead.
@OfficialFedHater4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, DS3 is close to the end of the cycle. The flame has been waning and humanity, the dark soul, is deteriorating. The deterioration leaves dregs behind which sinks to the deep, the deep is what washes the current cycle away, be it the age of flame or darkness, the insects devour the world and nothing but the ash remains leading to the rebirth of the world we saw in the age of ancients. The ashen hollows become the archtrees, the pilgrim butterflies and the way of dragon members become dragons, the ash covers the landscape creating the crags. At the end you either let the cycle go on, rekindle the flame to keep the age of fire going longer, or bring about the age of dark which I'm not sure how the latter stops the deep from wiping the slate. Of course, there's the new painted world as well, created with the dark soul.

This video just got me thinking. Possible that the Witch Trees found in the painted world are Pyromancers from the great swamp who literally took root and changed in their new home. We’ve seen hollows becoming tree-like across the High Wall of Lothric. Many of the painted world’s denizens may indeed be those who were forced to leave the Farron Woods area of the outside world. We have Corvians of varying types, The Legion Followers, and evening Great Wolves who seemingly inhabited the Farron region at some point seeing as how their is the Great Wolf Corpse and the Legion’s worship of wolf’s blood. Whatever happened in Farron caused many of its inhabitants to either flee or be exiled from their home and end up in the painting. Sulyvahn being born in the painting to one of these pyromancer women never new exile himself. He saw rot and grief and powerlessness, something he wasn’t about to give into. These origins could help to better explain the state we find Irythill in naturally. Cold, dark, full of pyromancers and hollowing life forms who feed on blood. The roots of humanity or simply sentient life, which anchor us to the deeper (The Deep) parts of our psyche (possibly our Id; cannibalism, greed, lust, fear - all aspects we see associated with characters/enemies involved with this seemingly nebulous concept). The baser roots literally grow and manifest themselves from the bodies of certain individuals.

Great video and I have a theory about Aldrich as he is a big part of the Church of the Deep. I believe that Aldrich was the most resent Lord of Cinders and responsible for the 'Pus of Man'. First is the visual similarities between Aldrich's true body and the Pus of man. Second all of the other rebellious Lords of Ciders had their territories consumed by what they were trying to prevent. The Abyss Walkers the Abyss and Yhorm the Gaint the Profaned Flame. Finally if as stated in the video Aldrich's Church of the Deep is still active where there is next to no followers left of the other Lords of Cinders.

Maybe the god that Aldrich ate was Nito, and eating him caused his body to decay or become corrupted due to the whole "miasma of death" thingy. Gwyndolin probably wasn't a god, he was just the son of a god. Perhaps becoming a god isn't a given via birth-rites, maybe it's like if you're the son of the president then you aren't also a president. "Gravelord Nito, the First of the Dead, was one of the original four lords that fought against the dragons." Perhaps Gwyn bestowed upon Nito godhood after this. It could explain the gravelord sword of Aldrich, and perhaps eating Nito gave Aldrich the idea to go to Anor Londo from the becoming part of Nito and absorbing his memories.
@MsVector6664 жыл бұрын
Nito is slain by the chosen undead, like Gwyn and all the others. Gwyndolin is, technically, the last decendant of the gods in this world, so that is why he is considered god, just because he is the closest one to Gwyn. Well, there is also the Nameless King, but he is long forgotten

...you are making some HUGE leaps trying to connect Nito to this, and it just. doesn't. fit. The "connection" of the mention of eyes is not enough to overcome the fact that Nito isn't even the same species as Sullyvahn, or existing in the same time or world...

Nah, the connection is fine. Idk why you'd bring up species, which is irrelevant because we haven't a clue what most people's species are in Dark Souls, lol. Things don't have to exist at the same time to be connected? Again the connection is fine and the "father" part was more for fun than tied directly to the theory in this video. But Nito is defiitely tied to Aldritch and the Pontiff in some way. I don't understand the complaint or the use of the word "fact" when you didn't present any. O_o

I don't really like you tying nito into this. Theorycrafting is what souls is about so I'm not going to say you're wrong but I do think you're off mark.

You don't like that I'm tying Nito into a character that literally uses the power of the Gravelord??
@whippolo34484 жыл бұрын
@@TheAshenHollow no no no I'm sorry i think we're misunderstanding each other. I should have clarified more, I didn't like the insinuation nito could be the pontiffs father. I love your content tho man, don't think I'm disparaging you:)

Gotcha. Yeah, that part was mostly just for people to chew on for fun. Doesn't take away or add anything to the theory! =]

"Pontiff" does not translate to "Pope" as in the title of the head of the Catholic church. "Pontiff" means "the speaker of," and has the same root word as "pontificate," which means to speak as an authority. "Pope," also comes from this word, but is not the actual word that "pontiff" comes from. The Pope is the speaker for the church in the same way Sulyvahn for the speaker for (presumably) Aldritch
