DS is over, at least for the current generation of gaming, so don't get your hopes up. From is focused on Sekrio now, an action game with zero RPG/Multiplayer elements. Sigh.. will be passing on that one, sadly. The only thing we can hope for in the next few years is a Bloodborne 2, but we may never see another Souls game, and if we do it'll be 5+ years off I imagine. Anri Wedding = Dark Bonfire. Look at their positioning, the animations, and the dark flames that creep out into the player. It's totally a Dark Bonfire to link humanity. The only difference is that instead of stabbing the corpse in the chest, we stab it in the brain. Speculate.
@michaelfilippino40078 жыл бұрын
It does look like it now that you mention it, it could serve as a mockery to how bonfires are made. Plus all of the Dark Pyromancies of the game say that the Flames of Humanity are Black.
@OrphanMartian8 жыл бұрын
I'm convinced Yuria is some form of dark firekeeper who serves Kaathe and Velka, and their goal is to do the impossible: unite fire and dark into one entity. "Black flames born from the Abyss bear no shadow." By creating a black flame, there is no more light and dark, and no more cycle. If you let the flame fade, it will only come back, and if you try to keep the flame going, it will only fade. The only way to stop the cycle is to "wed" both light and dark together. Maybe that's why the ritual is conceived as a wedding in the first place. This unison is also reflected when Yuria says, "Make Londor whole." The gods broke the world by creating light and dark, shattering time and space itself, and Yuria is actually the good guy trying to reunite the broken world. Also, if you think about it, 8 dark sigils are needed because 8 represents infinity and cycles. Okay I'm done for now.

I have the Ring of Whispers from DS2, it lets me hear hidden things. For instance, you know what became of Ornstein and Smough? Ornstein searched for his old friend the Nameless King and pledged loyalty to the dragon covenant. He stripped off his armor, jammed the front gate shut with his dragonslayer spear, and became a dragonkin/full-on dragon. He might even be the Storm Drake for all we know. As for Smough, he hung up his executioner's hammer, joined the Way of the White, changed his name, ate so many men he turned into writhing dark humanity, then went back to get revenge on Gwyndolin. He ended up right back where he started. That might sound crazy, but don't forget you can only get Smough's set after defeating Aldrich, just like every other boss set. So yeah, Ornstein is Storm Drake, Smough is Aldrich, NK is Firstborn, Gwynevere is Queen Lothric, Ocelotte could just be Prince Lothric's birth name, and the "angels" are the primordial serpents. Boom.

I favor the Usurpation of Fire ending because it offers us a way out of the cycle. You unite the flame with the darkness of humanity and your own powerful soul. Creating something that might be a little... different. I always ripped on the "let the fire fade" endings because the Age of Dark would be a miserable place to live. Everything would be hollow, with no light, no civilization, just a savage orgy of violence. But with the Ringed City, we find out that the Darksign was the doing of Gwyn, and we know that the hollows of Londor retain their sanity and even form a society. The Dark Sigil is like the Darksign, but it's not a shackle. There's no fire to burn away your souls on death, to burn away your memories and sanity. As an Unkindled, you're not the kind of Undead that you were in previous games. Rather, you are a sort of magical construct made to link the Fire. When Yoel gives you Sigils, you become human again. You're reintroduced to the darkness of humanity that you lost when you were resurrected as Unkindled. And once you have enough of these Sigils, you are a worthy vessel to harbor the First Flame within yourself. The power of the flame, the good things it gives us, combined with the immortality of the Dark Soul. You might be becoming a flame that never fades, just as bringing the Dark Soul to the Painter is speculated to create a painting that will never rot. It's striking to see what a visionary Kaathe was. He must've realized after so many cycles that letting the flame fade was never going to be enough to empower an Age of Man. The Firekeeper tells you that the Flame will relight. The answer wasn't to destroy the flame, but usurp it. Use its power for humanity. And conveniently, the Gods created the Unkindled. A vessel for fire, but not a Hollow, not really a human. An Unkindled can't betray the flame on its own. You don't have the option ingame without discovering certain secrets, as you were created to be drawn towards flame. The gods must've thought that they'd created something foolproof, an instrument in the Linking that couldn't choose the path of the Dark Lord. But Kaathe outplayed them. He devised a way to reintroduce the darkness of humanity to the Unkindled, turning the perfect tool for the Linking into the perfect Lord who could harness the Fire for Humanity.

Letting the fire fade is the best ending; Gwyn feared the dark, so he linked the flame himself, going against nature. When you let the flame fade in DS3, the Firekeeper says that this is how it was meant to be, and that flame shall return, but without gods. Just a world led by humans, nothing else.

(Be sure to see the weird AF "joke" ending to the last game since that's actually canon) Then skip to the NieR series. The gameplay isn't by any means perfect in those games either but the story more than makes up for any shortcomings and it's still quite enjoyable. So I'm really hoping for 2 things from the Dark Souls 3 dlcs. The first being a "light" based DLC that digs deeper into the Lothric royal family and the existence of angels, because Angels are seriously the most mysterious and straight up alien concept to be introduced to the lore. The second being a "dark" based DLC, that focuses on Londor and the Sable Church, because that has been the most interesting new land/faction added in Dark Souls 3. I think that, thematically, the dichotomy of having Light and Dark expansions would perfectly sum up the spirit of Dark Souls in both an in universe, and meta way.

@pdragon6198 жыл бұрын
YouSoSpice Those are actually just winged knights,the golden ones implied to be somehow "ascended" or more powerful, but still human knights who worship the actual angels. actual angels aren't really seen in the game as far as we know. Though I do think it's really cool, because they don't really fit into the established lore at all. The gods in Dark Souls aren't actual deities, at least not in the typical sense. They're just pygmies powered up by the light soul. They're more powerful than humans yes, but fundamentally not that different from them. Also the gods aren't creators, they didn't form the world, they're not the ones responsible for any of the major laws of nature or metaphysical concepts, and most importantly they are all physically bound to the world. There is no alternate world or "after life" in which they live, let alone a "heaven", which Angels are normally associated with. The gods are just a race of really powerful people, and they don't use angels as servants, just other, weaker gods. So angels really don't seem to fit in with the lore of the gods at all, which means they must be a completely separate thing entirely, which makes them super terrifying, because if there really is some kind of heaven/celestial world where these beings are living in, then that means there are concepts and laws of nature and worlds that even the gods were completely ignorant of. They could be something on an entire different plane of existence, kinda like how love craftian entities are too us.

What if Velka is the old lady we hear narrating at the beginning of Dark Souls 1 and 3? The first thing we hear in DS3 is the same voice as the one from DS1 saying "yes, indeed. It is called Lothric". Sounds like she's responding to someone here, no? What if that someone was Yuria, and she was asking her something along the lines of "I hear there's going to be another linking of the fire soon. Do you know where it is?" Gwyn's linking of the fire is literally called "the first sin". Is it not very logical that Velka would have everything to do with restoring the world to its natural order, if going against that order is a sin? Also seems to imply that Gwyn's linking of the fire gave birth to Velka if it's true though. Can hardly be a goddess of sin, if there are no sins.

theory: the more sin there is in the world, the stronger and more influential velka becomes, as she has more stuff to punish people for. If this is true it makes perfect sense that she's punishing the world for the first sin and therefore is one of the most powerful gods, no matter how hidden and furtive she is

This probably means nothing, but I've noticed a couple instances of Sindarin in Dark Souls. Sindarin is one of the Elvish languages created by J.R.R. Tolkien. Anor Londo is one example, as "anor" means "sun" and "lond" most closely means "haven." This might be the same case as Londor, since "dor" means "land." Though the grammatically correct name would be "Lonnor."

Three humans being the child of a god would be pretty difficult, Light Soul and all. I wouldn't put it past Velka to not get busy with a human though. There were an awful lot of very naughty raven girls in the painted world. I'm mainly lingering on 3 to maybe get answers to the Primordial Serpents' motivations, and where the First Flame came from. If it's just "it's a cycle that always existed" answer, or isn't answered at all, well... whatever, I guess. 3's invented mechanics for sigils and deep waters and ingesting dead god souls that shouldn't exist are so all over the place that my brain has kind of shut off completely past DaS1.
@VaatiVidya8 жыл бұрын
But remember - the Witch of Izalith had humanoid "daughters of chaos", and I think that Velka's daughters could be much the same (if indeed they are hers). I agree that they added too much fluff by complicating the sigils / signs in ds3, I don't quite understand what they're getting at there. That said though, I thought the same way about the Unkindled before this video..but now i love the idea that the Unkindled is born from undead linking the fire so many times that a new type of undead has been created. I often run into the feeling that DS3 is trying to more clearly convey what DS2 tried to. You run into a lot of redundant concepts, and I wish they wouldn't get so mired in the concept of cycles and souls. Hopefully the DLC just..moves things along and shows us something new.
@MauOfTheDead8 жыл бұрын
Sigils/Signs problem = different translators + sloppy QA, maybe? Is it also different in Japanese?
@cvpxballer8 жыл бұрын
Honestly I thought this would be the game where you broke the cycle since the second game reinforced that it really all was just a cycle that never ended. I was really disappointed that we didn't get more clarity on things like the primordial serpents and all the sigils. I think DS3 is the sequel DS1 deserved, and it isn't to say DS2 is not a good game, its a great game, but I wish DS3 had been DS2 and we got a DS3 that finally tied it all together and broke the cycle. There are alot of loose ends and things I think that would really click and be rewarding if we had something more resolute for the various sigils and endings other than the continuation of a cycle that has been happening for 2 games already. But who knows, maybe the deep waters could tie in bloodborne? lol

It makes sense. In DS1 you leave the fire. You aren't really the dark lord. All you did is abandon your throne as the one who would link the fire. Nashandra wanted someone to smother the first flame, but she couldn't. She is pure dark, and so any attempt to link it would simply destroy her, and fuel the fire. Only one who is both light, and dark could take the fire, and then smother it. That's why she wanted you to be one with the dark.
@onyxtay72468 жыл бұрын
Also I just had a epiphany in regards to Velka. Look at the parallels between Christianity, and Dark souls. Adam and Eve committed the first sin by breaking the one rule God had made. Eating the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil. This first sin brought death into the world. Gwyn committed the first sin when he linked the fire. It was the one thing he shouldn't have done, and because he did death came into the world. In the form of the undead curse. A curse that makes you die over, and over, and over. Velka is trying to right this wrong, and smother the fire. The player even has a bit of that Jesus imagery. You died to save the world, and because you rose again you are the only one who can save it from it's sin.

STORM LORD I'd say its Frampt. Lucifer's name means "shining one", or "light-bearer" in Hebrew. Frampt works to make the first flame continue shining. It just seems to fit. 11:29 I like to think that the darksign in the sky is the literal sun itself, and that in the Dark Souls universe the sun isn't a distant star but instead is one of Gwyn's miracles to cast his light across the world and in turn is itself fueled by the flame and fed by the linking of the fire. As the fire fades it begins to falter and fail taking on an appearance reminiscent of the darksign, but you can see trails of energy drawing downwards from it like the flame is consuming even it to try and stay alight, or that it too is being drawn down to the eventual ashen remains of the darkened future world where you fight Gael.

I feel that the Lord of Hollows ending is the true ending. Humanity finally takes the flames for themselves and take back the world that was rested from their hands by Gwyn and continue the natural progression. (Ancient, Fire, Dark.)
@brainplot4 жыл бұрын
I found the ending of fire ending also very fitting. Paradoxically, the linking of the fire ending was the least fitting imo.
@will2fite344 жыл бұрын
I know this is a two year old comment, but I never understood this take that people seem to have. Usurpation of Fire is literally just you failing to learn the lesson that the gods also failed to learn. No matter how you look at it, you are also resisting the course of nature in taking the flame for yourself. The age of dark ending, which promises a proper renewal of the cycle is proper, I think. And it works this time because rather than just walking away and hoping no one else links the fire in your stead, The Firekeeper herself takes the flame to keep it safe while it fades and ensure it cannot be relinked
@j.avance90314 жыл бұрын
@@will2fite34 With the line of thinking in mind wouldn't you also say that by taking the flame within ourselves we are also taking the flame to keep it safe and ensuring that no one can relink exactly like the fire keeper would've done in the other ending? Sure it most likely will still fade, but while it smolders we could use the last of it's power to build a kingdom of man ready for the age of dark to come? I don't see it as making the same mistake as the gods because they have been restarting the age of fire over and over again, but by taking the flame away we can finally begin the age of dark. That's my line of thinking anyway, but as in most things in Dark Souls it comes down to your own interpretation of events. Nothing will ever be confirmed 100% because that's the true beauty of Dark Souls.
@will2fite344 жыл бұрын
J.A Vance Hmmm, good point. I guess I didn’t think of it like that because the hollows of Londor seem to want to use the power of the Lord of Hollows indefinitely. I guess in the end, whether or not it’s a proper age of dark depends on the player character’s intent. When the time comes will he let the flame within him fade? Or he will further pervert its nature and find some way to keep it going? All depends on role play, really
@Alex-bw6yd3 жыл бұрын
That isn’t the natural progression though. You are literally usurping the flame as Gwyn did, you are commiting the first sin, again. The natural progression, which is stated multiple times in the game is snuffing out the embers and embracing darkness. Taking the flame for yourself, for humanity, is not snuffing out the embers. What will happen is you will end up having to link the first flame again just as Gwyn did and then the cycle will start once again.

When Gwyn linked the fire he "recruited" Velka to create the undead curse; she did it willingly and has kept the curse reappearing for ages since she understands that a world without light would be horrible and enslaving humans is the only way to avoid it. However, with time she starts to feel sorry for her "children" (the undead) due to all the suffering she had been inflicting on them age after age, to help soothe this suffering she instructs her daughters to create the Sable Church as a way to offer comfort to the poor undead. The church became big and attracted the attention of Kaathe, who convinced the daughters to betray their mother and instead usurp the flame for the undead; now instead of serving as a way to comfort the undead, Velka's church has become the tool to destroy the Age of Fire she had painfully been protecting since Gwyn bid her do so. Velka must be a really sad character, she had to do horrible things for the common good, torturing her children for an eternity, and in the end it is her pity for them that dooms all

The Dark Soul was originally found by the Furtive Pygmy...in the First Flame itself. Thus, the Dark Soul is itself a Lordsoul, just like those found by Nito, the Witch of Izalith, and Gwyn himself. I think this is why Nashandra wanted the First Flame, because the Dark Soul and even Dark came from it...and is maybe even powered by it, just like Gwyn's own Lordsoul of Sunlight.
@punishedbrak42553 жыл бұрын
Underrated comment, people always neglect that fact. "Humanity" (The Dark Soul) was split amongst massive amounts of beings, similarly to Gwyn's splitting of his own Lord Soul but on a larger scale, and a large portion locked away by Gwyn using Fillianore at the end of time in the Ringed City, out of fear that it's power rivaled and overwhelmed that of the other 3 Lord Souls. The Dark Soul represents Entropy and the Opposite, not the absence, of Light; The Dark only exists because there is Flame, just as the Light. Pygmies (Humans) are "Pygmies" because we come from the same stock as "Gods" or Lords, we were the same beings before the Flame and the taking of the Lord Souls made small by the nature of The Furtive Pygmy and The Dark Soul. I believe the "First Sin" Aldia discovered wasn't the Linking of the Fire, but instead, the deception of Humanity into believing it was something different from what it truly was, and being forced under control by members of their own kind, "Gods" and Giants. Think of how much Gwyn went through just to secure not only his own strength, but The Furtive Pygmy's Ancestors weaknesses. He feared Humanity almost moreso than Dragons; Gwyn didn't need to deceive them in order to win the war, but he needed Eons of deception to put Humanity on the bottom of the ladder.

Hey, i wanted to tell you a theory about the firelink greatsword. I don't know if there is some similar theory in the internet but i want to talk about it. We always assumed the bonfires were created after the first flame and i think it's still true. But what about the first flame itself? We always saw it as a bonfire. But the description of the firelink greatsword says:.....this sword existed before the age of fire(or something like that)". So if the sword was created before the age of fire then we can say fire already existed during the age of the dragons. So what if the firelink greatsword was born from the tail of a dragon? I think this because of the weapon art of this greatsword. It's a flame attack in a direct line. Sounds familiar? It should because it's a similar attack as the dragon weapons from DS1. Maybe the once upon a time, a dragon like Sieth was born, a mortal dragon. After his death the firelink greatsword was born. (Continue in the comments because mobile)
@nitron54868 жыл бұрын
The dragons discarded the weapon as useless and pointless because of their size. So the weapon remained there, on the ground. After sometime the weapon fell inside an archtree until it reached a cave. The same cave as the one in the DS1 introduction. There the sword hitted the ground, accidentaly using his latent power. And like this, the first flame was born, and the rest is history. Thank you for reading this long theory, i literally made this in 15 minutes because i didn't have anithing better to do. The part of the description of the firlink greatsword was written without reading the wiky, i just tried to remember it. The little story i made up about the dragons and the first flame isn't supported by items description except firelink's. I just tried to imagine a story and this is result. Even if there are no description to confirm this theory, i think the story of Dark Souls isn't supposed to be fully understandable with the help of item descriptions. (Again see under for the

Few things off, and the first of which being that the dragon weapons all look like the respective dragon it came from or at least has a nice likeness to it. Secondly, no dragons were metallic. Third, the Firelink Greatsword is much too refined to be a dragon weapon as all dragon weapons save the Moonlight Greatsword all look a bit beastial and raw. That's just from the weapon standpoint though. There are quite a bit more things that also bunk that but it doesn't matter as it is but a theory.

Great video Vaati! I’m a long-time fan, first-time commenter. I especially enjoyed your insights connecting Velka to Londor as Velka has always been the most captivating mystery of Dark Souls lore for me and because the connections you pointed out support my personal theory that I have not yet seen discussed. I think her full name is Darkmoon Velka The Goddess of Sin. I believe that she founded the Darkmoon covenant which Dark Sun Gwyndolin inherited leadership of when Velka fled Anor Londo just as Yorshka inherited it from Gwyndolin. I believe that Velka is not only human but a powerful fragment of Manus similar to Nashandra. I think she is the first queen of darkness and attempted to corrupt the first king of light beginning a cycle that would be repeated over Dark Souls 2, its DLC , and possibly Dark Souls 3. I had hoped to keep this short, but I didn't manage. Here are some interesting pieces of evidence connecting Velka to dark: If I had to name Velka’s pardoner’s emote that we can’t get in DS1 I would call it “praise the moon”. Velka’s servant Oswald stands there in a pose that is an inverted praise the sun. (The “Well! What is it!” gesture Oswald gives us is quite different from his pose.) She is connected to occult damage through her rapier’s damage type and the occult ember being surrounded by crows. I think it is safe to assume that occult damage is dark damage due to the damage type of the dark hand in DS1 and DS3 and considering that Lords are weak to occult and the last surviving Lord after DS1, The Nameless King, is weak to dark. On a bit of a tangent I also believe Velka to be the mother of Priscilla the Crossbreed as Priscilla possesses the Life Hunt ability which the gods fear and the dagger made from her tail deals occult damage. It seems reasonable to me that Life Hunt is related to bleed damage and occult. And as I mentioned above I think it’s reasonable to assume that occult is dark. Therefore Priscilla’s Life Hunt is related to dark which I think she inherited from her mother Velka. Also Velka is always depicted as a woman with her face mostly covered by a hooded cloak and there is a hooded-cloaked-woman-with-a-child statue in the painted world that points directly to Priscilla. I think the religion in Irithyll was an extension of the Darkmoon covenant. There are all sorts of moon references in the city and in descriptions of the religion. I think that the people worshipped Dark Sun Gwyndolin until Pontiff Sulyvahn took over and manipulated the religion to suit whatever his own mysterious Profaned Flame related agenda was. The Pontiff’s Greatsword of Judgment description supports this theory, I think. I think it was Sulyvahn who declared worshiping the angels as heresy. The angels likely being the Corvian story tellers. Although I have always had a suspicion that the angels are connected to the Primordial Serpent(s) due to the statues depicting the serpents in Lothric all have angel wings. Now I’ll take a bit of a leap to connect some theoretical dots: Corvians tell stories about Priscilla. Priscilla is theoretically connected to Velka. Velka is theoretically connected to the Kaathe due to their mutual connections to the Sable Church in DS3 and the Darkwraiths in DS1. So, Corvians tell stories about Priscilla, Kaathe, Age of Dark, and Velka (The fuckered-up melted statues next to the serpent statues might be of Velka, but that may be a stretch). Prince of Lothric is into it, because fuck being burned alive to link the flame and likely his older sister Gertrude is into it. This not-linking-the-flame business does not support Sulyvahn’s Profaned Flame related agenda. Sulyvahn declares it all heresy and after imprisoning Gertrude for a while has her hauled off with the Corvian heretics to be devoured by Aldrich. Gertrude manages to not get devoured, loses here tongue and sight, changes her name to Rosaria, and starts putting to practice what she learned from the Corvians and/or Kaathe about Darkwraithing.

Vaati's stuff only gets better with age as we have the hindsight to see what he's right and wrong about and see how our views on the lore have grown over the years. Londor DLC prediction being prime example. That made the most sense from a lore perspective, but what we've got is equally as interesting now imo.

How quaint would it be for Velka to hold the final secrets and details. Her great crow delivers us into the Dark Souls world, and it seems only correct for her to likewise show us the end of all.

Wait. Look at the bonfires. They all constitute of a Coiled Sword, plus ashes and bones. The item that levels up a bonfire is an Undead Boneshard. Previously it was Humanities. If the Dark Sigil and Humanities are the same thing, burning Undead at a Bonfire (or maybe a larger, primordial Bonfire) might be the only way to truly keep the age of fire alive, by kindling the fire, and the only way to actually put an end to the curse of a Hollow, as everytime he revived he would be inside the bonfire, leaking his humanity in again. However, an "Ashen" one is someone who kept the perk of being undead, but lost the Dark Sigil when burned for a bonfire, as such, failing to kindle the age of Fire itself, and stopped losing humanity. A creature that can actually stop the age of fire and move into the age of men. Geez this channel gets more mindblowing every new video.

And although I have not played Demon's Souls yet and I'm talking out of brief readings, and I know that it is a spiritual antecessor to DS. This makes me think like there could be more than a virtual correlation between the two. Without the mechanic of humanity (through Ember, Effigy or Dark Soul), this could either mean that Demon's Souls happens during the Age of Ancients (There are Dragons, Serpent like creatures and Demons ruling over, and the world is covered in fog) or Demon's Souls happens during the Age of Man (the Gods are absolutely gone and the sigils no longer exist). It gives a new sense for Gods, as the few humans from the Age of the Ancients discovering the Fire, slaying the ancient creatures and vanquishing the fog and the darkness, and raising themselves to the level of Gods (seeing how you as a player who is a human can kill them without huge differences in stats). If Lord Gwyn as the main "God" is "afraid of the Dark" it would make sense for the Gods to want to keep the Age of Fire alight, and the way they did it was by creating a curse of Dark and offering salvation from it, this way they could always have the Dark Souls literally throwing themselves into the fire for it. This is so interesting.

New Londo is pretty much right next door to Anor Londo, though. And we see that what was once Sen's Fortress, Darkroot Garden, Firelink Shrine and the Undead Burg/Parish has mostly become the Boreal Valley. I believe the Profaned Capital is most likely the remnants of New Londo, whereas Londor is probably somewhere elae entirely.
