The Souls universe is one in which the most highborn and honorable of nobility can be reduced to snarling, sub human beasts consumed by their own fear and obsessions. Yet, its also a world where a lowly deserter, an undead notorious for thievery and subterfuge, can be given a greater purpose and even mourned after his passing. Its not exactly a "rags to riches" story, but Greirat did teach us that in a world of criminals and monsters, sometimes a petty thief is the most valorous one in the room.

Lore theory theory that someone might have already said: What if Greirat didn't just want to snoop around to get out of the Shrine? Look at it this way; Greairat, directly or indirectly, was caught and imprisoned by the Lothric nobles, rendering him unable to save Loretta's life. When you save Greairat, he recognizes you as an Unkindled, bound to eventually fight the lords of Cinder. What if Greirat went thieving in order to gather supplies for you, knowing full well that you would use them against the Twin Princes? Is his entire questline just a bizarre revenge quest based around avenging Loretta?

What I really dig about the questline too is that the key to his cell in the High Wall already warns about Lothric Castle and how thieves who dare go there never return. The game already warns you about the outcome before you even first talk to Greirat. Also Patches does still leave for the Castle. After telling him about Greirat, he's gone from Firelink until one boss is slain, and returns with a Hidden Blessing. Which kinda makes me think that Patches did head to see if he can rescue Greirat, but failed to find him, yet he did return alive from the Castle, cementing Patches still as the #1 rogue in the series!

I think Loretta was still very close to her, but that he did make the mistake of stealing her ring, which is why he askes us to take it to her. He then regrets his mistake for doing so once he finds out she's dead. This is most likely why we find him curled up in a ball, mourning her death; not even able to recognize the champion who had set him free from his cell in Lothric because he's too caught up with griefing over Loretta's death and thinking it was all his fault.
@OHG_Fawx7 жыл бұрын
If Greirat really was this robin hood character, then it seems to me that he stole the ring FOR her not from her. Knowing that she was old, the blue tearstone ring would strengthen her in her weakened state. When the Evangelicals came spreading the teachings of the Cathedral, those who were not converted to the light of the Profaned Flame were killed. I believe that's why Loretta died. I think Greirat was so sad because the ring was stuck in prison with him for so long when he knew someone needed it.

Miyazaki really knew what a gut punch it would be to find this admirable man’s ashes in the filthy sewers of Irithyll. But those moments of tender friendship in firelink shrine with Greirat made it all worth it.
@apotato62782 жыл бұрын
Greirat dies in the sewer, Anri loses their friend and goes hollow and Siegward... well, if it wasn't abundantly clear that Miyazaki absolutely detests hapiness you haven't bumped into an onion knight yet. Through the entire game this man is an absolute beacon of chivalry and friendship. After every great victory together he offers you a toast, his mugs of Siegbräu reminding you that all is not lost in this crumbling world. Finally Siegward fulfills his duty, kills his old friend and pleads you have a *final* toast with him. You toast, you down the Siegbräu and the brave onion tells you, like so many times before, that he's going to have himself a little nap. Well, of course, it's the only thing to do after a proper toast. "You are a true friend. Best of luck with your duty." and as soon as you leave the room he kills himself. Damn it Miyazaki, why!?

I never told Patches where Greirat went and instead let Seigward rescue him, since doing Seigward's story line removes the armor from Patches' possession entirely. Less lore in that path though, I suppose, since Siegward would just be doing what Onionbros do best.

A few missed details: 1. Greirat uses a bandit's knife, not a thrall axe. 2. The "peculiar onion knight" saves Greirat even if you don't tell patches where he has gone. 3. If you kill Greirat in firelink shrine, then patches will attack you near the giant tree.

Dragonbasty He didnt mis it but simply chose this story line. He might inglude the other one in the onion knight lore video.

Greirat is always saved by an 'onion knight'. Who it is depends on who has the onion armour. Seigward saves him if you gave him his armour in the well by killing patches or buying the armour off him after returning to firelink. If you do neither of these things and leave seigward in the well, then it is indeed patches that uses the armour to save him.
@nandooliveira41508 жыл бұрын
Dragonbasty Siegward only saves Greirat If u already give him back his Armour saving him from the well. If u don't and let Greirat goes, Greirat dies.

2. not really. For that to happen you need to have bought the armor from Patches and given it back to Siegward. If you don't do that you need to tell Patches where Greirat is for him to be saved.

If you send him to Lothric castle and get his ashes and give them to the maiden in Firelink then she will have everything he had and at his prices as well as a few things that he stole from Lothric Castle before dying. I mean it was the characters in Dark Souls 1 that drew us into the world and the story not the other way around. Here is something that may be interesting when it comes to Greirat. Most NPCs fight in a similar way but Greirat is a little different. Siegward, Hawkwood, Eygon and Yuria will all retreat and use an Estus when at low HP up to 4 times but on the fourth they will show that their estus flask is empty. Greirat on the other hand will not use an Estus no matter how low his HP gets. Whether this actually means anything or is just a quirk is just conjecture but could it be that Greirat is not undead?

Greirat, more a rogue than a thief. A thief knows his boundaries, but a rogue acts upon emotion. A damaged hero, be it by a fated brith in poverty, or a crippling incapacity to accept the sacrifices a hero must partake. Greirat and Lothric aren't quite so different from one another. Greirat, willing to sacrifice himself for a cause is given none, thus he must steal one from those who do. Lothric, born weak and sickly, was given a task he couldn't complete. Overwhelmed by the fate which had been forced upon him, he escapes. Waiting in the shadows for an answer to come. Hoping one would be foolish enough to steal his fate. Opposite sides of the same coin. One capable and willing of this sacrifice, born poor, thus eliminating any chance of him being given the task to make the ultimate sacrifice. The other, weak and unwilling, born to the bloodline of the gods and lords who have sacrificed themselves to keep the world alive.

Something I've noticed that's very different in Dark Souls 3 than in the previous ones, is the strong presence of the moon. In Dark Souls 1 the moon wasn't even present. The Figure of worship was the sun, and the Sun only. However in Dark Souls 3 the Moon is the noble's figure of worship. It's presence is very obvious in Dark Souls 3. All throughout Irithyl, the main source of light in the sky is the moon. The cool thing about the moon's strong presence in Dark Souls 3, is that the moon is incapable of shining by itself. Some poets call the moon a thief or a rogue. A vain miss, who could not shine shine by herself, and so stole the sun's own light to glow brighter than any star in the night's sky. This has some parallels in Dark Souls 3. For one, the knights of Irithyl, are all women, or womanly in aspect. Gwyndolin, despite knowing full well that he was a man by birth, was treated and trained like a daughter due to his affinity to the moon (which in the lore is womanly). I'm not sure what to do with these bits of trivia, or even if they are even related to anything. However I feel like someone more insightful than me, can make something out of this. Lastly one bit of odd unrelated trivia. In the Shinto religion, the sun deity is a woman (Amaterasu), and the moon deity is a man (Tsukiyomi). Its funny how certain things are very European (western in the context of Asia) about the Souls series, while others are very Japanese. *P.S. I'm aware I'm replying to myself

Dear VaatiVidya, As with many of the videos I have watched from all the way to Demon Souls to Dark Souls 3, your videos have provided with excellent content and narration from your part. As a game and you already know this, Dark Souls in particular does not explain the story directly like most games. The player, who is willing enough, goes to explore this massive world: Fighting undead along with hideous yet amazing creatures, meeting NPCs, playing as to the player's wishes cooperatively or hopefully in friendly sport ( I say sport kind of loosely but hopefully all in good fun haha), and not just play but also experiences and immerses within this world. There are multiple KZbin channels that do play Dark Souls, however among them, I would say that you are one of the most detailed oriented. You not only immerse but rather you give your own interpretation of the world around and provide information researched around the world of Dark Souls. Not only do you do these videos such as your "Prepare to Cry" videos, but you also find the smallest details that people tend to overlook within the environment which gives even more lore to this story. This narration/story telling is enchanting, in fact, I go out of my way to find your Dark Souls/Bloodborne videos in particular because I learn something new, even small fun facts. Of course, your videos that involve Edward Emberpants are delightful and it reminds me of the times I co-op with my buddy. Overall, along with many KZbinrs who do play this game franchise including yourself, have inspired me to go to this fantasy land to not only play, but be the character I created and explore and fight these undead and learn so much about Dark Souls/Bloodborne. I ask that you continue your journey: Play more, learn more, make more of these videos if and when you can, and continue being you. To quote Solaire of Astora- " Now that I am Undead, I have come to this great land, the birthplace of Lord Gwyn, to seek my very own sun". Seek your Sun VaatiVidya. Hopefully when the next Dark Souls III DLC comes out, there would be plenty of content that can fill even more gaps to this complex yet intriguing world. Sincerly, A Fellow Undead seeking his own Sun

Dark Souls is a series that shows us the struggle of living, inevitability of death, and the choice of how one dies. You can be like Gwyn and try to preserve what you had and lose yourself to power forever, give up trying and be hollow inside and out forever, or try to do something of worth and die trying. There is no absolute victories, only small battles and smaller people winning them, but even so, the humans who win these small battles meet a nobler end than the kings and 'gods' who try to preserve their power, who often turn into monsters and suffer for all eternity. Something to consider.

I never know if it's better for Greyrat to die in Lothric Castle, or to deny his last pillaging trip and let him witness the Ashen One's decision regarding the First Flame (whether you link it, take it, or simply let it go out). Greyrat didn't want to die a rat, but would it have been wrong for him to witness the end (or continuation) of the world with his friend? I'm not sure what he would have preferred. (I was a softy; for my first playthough I left most of the NPCs alone (I was swimming in Gold Winged Knight souls and didn't want their clothes) and left each of them an Ember while I let the First Flame die and my Ashen One goes Hollow, their journey completed...)

A lot of NPCs are like that. Laurentius is the same too. Either let them go hollow and die, but complete their life goal. Or keep them safe and protected, but never to find what they are looking for.

Same with Siegmeyer. You either let him die in glorious battle on your behalf, or fight alongside him, saving his life but depriving him of his purpose, making him go hollow.

and lets not forget Alfred from Bloodborne, in wishing to follow in his master's ways, leading him to the immortal vileblood queen only to serves to undo Martyr Logarius' methods of keeping Annalise locked away from the world. But if we were to never help him, his mission is already fulfilled to its best possible outcome.

And then there's me who killed everyone left in Firelink at the end of my first playthrough because I wanted to have everything on that character. I mostly only felt bad for killing Orbeck.

Really? No pity for killing Irina, Greirat or Karla?

Im here after playing around 40 hours of Elden ring and I must say that Dark Souls 3 is by far the best souls game so far. The deep stories behind the characters and all the details that every structure has a meaning for the lore and nothing is done randomly and everything is done on purpose and it’s your duty to search for their meaning. Everything just fits so perfectly there and after nearly 400+ hours in Dark Souls 3 in the last 2 years imma about to cry when I see this…

Greirat was always my favorite NPC and now I feel like I fully understand his story and character. This video killed me Vaati, thank you.

Greirat is the best character in the series. I miss him so.

Dude, I don't even play Dark Souls, 'coz I am such a scrub, but I've learned I all know about Dark Souls and Bloodborne from you, and boy has it been interesting and amazing to listen to what you have to say. From your theories, to your prepare to cry, to your playthroughs... Everything is an easy ten out of ten. Keep up your amazing work. :D

This is one of the best videos I've ever seen. I'm late to getting into the Dark Souls series (I haven't even finished DS3), but watching this makes me want to start over (again lol) and leave the tearstone ring by loretta's body in the undead settlement to honour her, like leaving flowers by a grave. The way you tell the story it's so easy to get lost in the lore. It's so emotional. Time to binge watch all your videos and subscribe!

I feel like people don't talk enough about how fantastic the voice acting is in these games. There's so much emotion and depth behind Greirat's rapsy voice.

I never send him off to any outings. He seemed like a genuine good guy ever since first met him and I don't want him to get hurt. Just stay here at firelink buddy.
