Still seeing Dark souls to this day, I will never forget the words I heard regarding the end of the series: "In the end, you're just two nobodies, fighting in the end of the world, for the dark soul of men" I mean, this one line means so much, for us, for the story, we always fight and fight, always going for harder challenges and opponents. And in the end, you fight a Slave Knight, a nobody, just like what you are now, no one, there is no one left to acknowledge your existence as "important" anymore. No one except Gael, who still looks for more blood of the Dark soul, and you have a little bit on you, that makes you his target as well, going insane or not. This ending is perfect, and there was no other way to end it as best as this one

@@jinx1987 flakes don't mix with water to create a plausible color. Sure it may look like it's paint but when you apply it it'll just smear over the canvas like water color. But with water color they use a water soluble binder that is not present in dried blood flakes. Because blood flakes are not engineered to be painted with. Thick viscous blood will be your best friend in achieving a worthy paint. I have experimented this using my very own blood. EDIT Oh, I also forgot to mention that blood turns from it's original hue to a brown orange. So yeah get that *thicc* blood.

I have a strong feeling that the painting Aria paints is likely an ocean. I recall that Aldritch had a vision of a future as being a deep ocean, along with dreaming of a "Pale, young girl in hiding". This comes from the Lifehunt Scythe miracle description, so I of course thought it referred to Priscilla, but now I believe Aldritch was dreaming of Aria and her painting. So, does this mean that the original world of Dark Souls also takes place within a painting?

I was very afraid that the series would end in a rather somber, anticlimactic fashion; as that is the nature of souls games. All the death and sadness that inhabited this world would lead to nothing. Even with all the great lore and stories, it rendered this journey to be something meaning less (to me at least). But Gael's quest gives it all a purpose. His quest ultimately lead to the creation of a new world, a better one. Gael is truly the hero of the series
@OperatorHark

At the end of the world fighting Gael, it felt super final. Two undead who have been around since forever (Gael in character and you IRL since Dark Souls 1) both fighting for the very thing that split into Dark Souls. The world is dead and everyone you saved and fought alongside are gone. It felt so hopeless, yet in the end you still had a goal to make something out of it. It ended in the most Soulys way possible. Total futility, but still some hope. I felt like the Ringed City and Dreg Heap segments of the DLC just tried to tie in lore to explain things while the last segment was supposed to make it all meaningless in the end.

After 3 Long Years, I think I have finally figured this plot out.. *When Shira, Knight of Filianore said: "thy treachery, thy profanity, and thy shameless yearning!" ... She was talking about how you ended your Journey at the Kiln of the First Flame, how you betrayed the fire and became a Lord of Hollows. You betrayed her elders, embraced the darkness and proclaimed yourself Lord. This proves that the area you were teleported to is indeed in the future. Her words were gentle when you both spoke back in the city. If you pay attention to this scene, you'll see that it is darker. Lit, but darker, very similar to the tone of light you see in the Lord of Hollows ending. Your journey in DS3 was not to link the fire and bring death, but to reclaim the Dark Soul of man and move to the new painted world, a world tailored to humans/pygmies. "Thy lowly kind..", She is not talking about just the unkindled, but all hollows as well (humans), who usurped the fire and embraced the dark. You have essentially ENDED Gwyn's legacy and the Age of Fire. And Aria (painter) said that the world she will be painting will be "cold and gentle and fine home for forlorn ones". I am now certain, she was talking about Hollows when she said "Forlorn Ones", Forlorn meaning "sad, abandoned and lonely", which is exactly how Dark Souls portrayed man. Considering how difficult it is to get that ending (Lord of Hollows), I honestly think it is the 'True' ending of Dark Souls, where the Amalgam/Son of all of the Ashes of former Unkindled has finally came to understand and embrace man's true nature; dark, lonely and cold. A very sad and painful ending, for a sad and painful storyline. I think it is very fitting. It is fitting for another reason, it is ironic and poetic. Since the dawn of time, the Lords have been shaping the world in accordance with their own egoistic visions, ignoring the natural flow of "Life" as it once was before the first flame. 'Man' or 'Pygmy' were always subjects to those mighty creatures (Gwyn and his people), even the Pygmy Lord was faceless, nameless and forgotten, because it was never a Pygmy's place to be remembered among the Lords. Pygmy (in anthropology) is also a word that refers to ethnic & simple tribes that were unusually short and primitive. That's how the Lords saw man, short, primitive and weak. Dark Souls in my view, is essentially the Revolt of the Pygmies, where they will bring order to the chaos that fire has caused. It is very poetic considering we assume order comes from light, but I think the writers wanted to flip that subject on its head. You, the player, the amalgamation of those Pygmies whom have sacrificed themselves to Gwyn's fire & corrupted vision, have chosen to rebel and embrace the true nature of man, dark & cold. Ultimately proclaiming yourself Lord, not that of light, but of Dark. Dark Souls 3 is the milestone that marks the beginning of the age of man, the age of Pygmies, where none of the former Lords exist, only a species of dark hollows led by Ash. These hollows have ultimately abandoned the world that Gwyn has shaped and moved to a world painted by a mixed-breed girl (half man - half dragon, the creatures Gwyn had enslaved). They will leave their former world ablaze, where time and space have shattered, where no life can be hosted, hoping that one day it will collapse on itself. This could very well set the scene for a 4th installment of this series, as it opens numerous pathways for a totally new storyline. But I might be wrong, I would like to hear your opinion on this. EDIT: just a theory, but I think this whole Pygmy rebellion was orchestrated by Gael who has witnessed all the events of Dark Souls since Gwyn's first age. Also, if I recall correctly, he has the name "Gwyn" in his original name. Additionally, pay attention to how this battle with Gael contrasts with the battle with Gwyn in Dark Souls 1, both bosses are polar opposites but exhibit the same might, one has brought the age of light, while the other was bringing an age of dark. Might be something worth looking into.

I hope there is no Dark Souls 4. This is the best ending I could've ever hoped for. The poetry of how the story's conclusion rhymes with its beginning is simply beautiful. The world's final stage looks almost exactly like its first one - a dead grey land overcast by grey skies, inhabited only by beings that are neither truly dead nor alive. In the beginning there were only the stone, immortal dragons, in the end we have only the immortal undead. The primordial land was filled with grey archtrees, the world's end is littered with gray ruins. Ringed City shows us that the entire world of Dark Souls was, in a way, undead. It honestly should have been obvious to us before - it's locked in a cycle of death and rebirth, each subsequent one being more and more rotten and insane, and then in Ds3 we even see the Sun become a dark sing - as if the world itself was bearing it. This reveal did not come out of nowhere, it was foreshadowed as far as Ds1. I love it. It's beautiful how the Ringed City arranges all the information we already had to show us that Gwyn, by making the entire world undying, has made it impossible for the age of dark to truly take root. Kaathe's dream from Ds1 was impossible. The Dark was supposed to naturally evolve once the flame died, but fire itself became undead and never truly died. Gwyn broke the world's natural order completely, but Kaathe's dream is finally realized at the DLC's ending - the paintress avoids the problem entirely by pouring all the dark of the undead world into a new one, finally allowing the universe to move on and restore its natural order. It's the perfect end for the series.

Since DS 3 made more than DS 2 I'd be shocked if they don't do a remake SOTFS style for DS 3 eventually. I also feel that this game could continue with one more dlc, the 'city of light' dlc. You start it by a bonfire at the old church at the end of the world which takes you to lothric, it's outter walls turning to sand the instant they're touched, but the closer you get to the center the more stable the buildings are. As you delve deeper and deeper the groans of foes beginning to surround you making the torch necessary for once to see what you're doing as you get down into this seemingly endless pit. Then you fight a boss that represents all of the darkness and evil that's collected in the deep. After beating the boss when you light the new bonfire it lights up the deep burning away the darkness of man and it's architecture built inside before a massive roar makes the dot of light at the top vanish all the buildings turning to sand plugging the deep like a sand stuffed gourd. Returning the deep to how it was before humanity as 'the deep' is not darkness of man it is a magical pit if you will that humans found sometime past the timeline of Dark Souls 2 and the darkness of man corrupted it over time. This bonfire then takes you to the city of light with as much fan service and references to DS 1/2 as they can think of with the final boss either being all father loyd or multiple bosses involving time travel via a magic mcguffin to do with bonfires explaining (in the vague not really explaining way From does) why time is so fucked up for you lol.

But at the same time, there will always be people like Gwyn, Kaathe or Vendrick; people who seek to manipulate the state of the world. The outside, undead world has to keep existing as a play-thing for people like that, to keep the new painted world safe. Dark Souls 2 shows us that a new First Flame can be lit. The cycle in the world outside the painting will keep going, no matter what we do. If we look at it like this, like our happy ending was already achieved at the end of Ringed City, I'd be perfectly happy with a Dark Souls 4 as long as it's a genuinely good game and doesn't muck up this bit of story.

I feel somewhat the same way, although my case is a bit different. For me, Demon Souls triggered a depression I never knew I had. Strange, I know. It reminded me how lonely I was during childhood, but tried to ignore it and went on with daily life. But then came Demon Souls. Maybe my subconscious mind was attracted to it for some reason. Just from the atmosphere alone. First time playing a video game that made me feel intensely lonely. It somehow reminded me how it reflects real life but also the spiritual side of things as well. How difficult and impossible life can seem, but can be rewarding as we overcome it. And that there is always that ray of hope, as we all feel when we see an unexpected bonfire. Help from others(players) gives us that bit of comfort, but only temporary, before they say goodbye and head back to their own parallel world to face their own challenges. Ultimately all of us is truly alone in our journeys, although the knowledge that other people are also feeling the same makes it less lonely.

Well for one most of the power of the bonfires would be burnt away by then. Even in the age of the gods the bonfires were waning as fire keepers were killed or abandoned their duties. The fires burn the bones of undead, so they would run out of fuel if left unattended no? Not to mention in the time that you skipped after touching the egg, its likely the fire hasn't been linked in all that time. Another theory is that most undead are simply weaker than the ashen one and chosen undead. Even patches began loosing his mind and that was before you time travled into the future and killed gael. Also its possible gael cured his undead curse by consuming the dark soul.

Right. I simply don't get how people find the quality of this series to be comparable to the Witcher series. It's not a bad game in it's own right, but DS is something else. Besides having a generic story, Witcher's motifs are very simplistic and surface-level.

@@fiso64 It's just very different kinds of stories. Dark Souls is a very abstract, epic tale of the passing of ages, gods and humanity; While The Witcher is a personal tale about very human issues, emotions and difficult decisions. It's not right to compare them like that, they don't try to go for the same target.

I have a pretty unusual name. I started my dark souls journey a long time ago. Like many others; I always shared my name with the characters I played as along the way. When I started DS3 I couldn't believe all the little references, it wasn't just a cool coincidence to me. It really felt like those heroes from the past stories had led me to this. That I truly was a part of this legendary tale of cycles and I'd chosen to use my name for a reason. When I finally defeated Gael at the end of the world and handed the pigment of the dark soul to the painter and she asked me my name, at first I was ready to tell her, to honour all those heroes that had led me to this moment, but I paused. In my mind the cycle of death, deception, and suffering had to end there. I'd watched the world destroyed by fire over and over again and all that was left at the end was me and I had no place in the gentle world to come. I told her I had no name. She still named the painting after me.

I think Gael is among the most fascinating characters in Dark Souls, because in a very real way, he goes against the meta-narrative. The entire Dark Souls series is themed around entropy, the eventual grinding of time, and the decay of the world. The characters are ground down, the places are ground down, everything is. At the end of DS1, we link the fire, much in the same way Gwyn did. And the Kiln then was a monstrous tower of metal and possibly glass, warped by the firestorm of power that occurred when Gwyn did it. But Gwyn linked the Lord Soul of Light, and not even all of it. The player, to accomplish the same feat, uses the Lord Soul of Life, Death, and the fragments of soul held by the Four Kings and Seath, taken from them at their lowest point. See what I mean? The quality of the fuel is degrading, and more is needed to fuel the flame. At the end of Dark Souls 3, the Unkindled must link the flame, using the souls of Lorian and Lothric, as well as the Lords of Cinder who previously did it. None of these entities are as strong as the gods, save perhaps Aldrich. And they have already been burned, so you are essentially throwing already burned wood into a fire to eke out some last bits of fuel. And at the end, there is no firestorm, but the player simply catches fire and falls to ash, like a mild cooking fire, taking place not in a kiln, but in the ash heap of previous failures, the landscape occasionally studded with a remnant from the old Kiln. Part of the appeal of Dark Souls as a series is its ability to tell a story through game-play mechanics. And from a meta-narrative, the player character represents a spark of fire, reigniting that which already has burned until it grows enough to revitalize the fire. You start as some low level undead in the first game, and begin to sweep through, decimating the population of the game, growing stronger and stronger as you do, until you rival the gods, even when they are at their lowest points, slaying them and adding their power to your own. The third game makes the metaphor literal, as you are unkindled ash, the amalgamation of that which has been burned until you too rise at the toll of the bell, gaining the strength of flame and consuming souls. And Gael, I see not as a reflection of the Soul of Cinder(Though he absolutely is that as well), but rather as the only character who mirrors the player. All other characters endure, from Shira, to Midir, to Patches, they endure or they go hollow. Gael has been enduring since the time of the gods, but he has never gone hollow. He outlived his masters, and found a place to be safe. And when that was threatened, he found the player, and set us on the path of conflict with Elfriede. He alone of the characters we see through the series, noticeably increases in power and strength. The player slaughtering their way through the base game is mirrored in Gael, a simple undead of humble origin, killing his way through the Ringed City, and devouring his enemies. Which is why it is a fascinating boss fight. Gael is the only boss in DS1 or DS3 (haven't played 2) who is genuinely at the apex of his power. He has devoured and internalized in truth the Dark Soul, the last surviving Lord Soul, and this is the clash of the titans that the series never really gave us. You the player, are an apotheosis of flame, the incarnation of all that is left to burn in the world, from the Lords of Cinder, to the last remaining gods, to even the dragons, representing the tortured revitalization of the Age of Fire. And he is the apotheosis of dark, who devoured all that was left of the race of pygmies, and represents the oncoming age of Dark, and the frenzied insane power held within. And when you finally win, you realize that Gael, hero of his own story, has knowingly sacrificed himself to create the world he would want to live in, in a dark mirror to how the player sacrifices themselves to link the fire.

Slave Knight or not, Gael was a true hero. Despite his ordeals, nay because of them he wanted to break the cycle of rot and rebirth in the painted worlds he sought refuge in. With his knowledge and loyalty in hand he set forth to not only find a Champion worthy of ending the lethargic tyranny of Friede but also set out to acquire the very essence of humanity - The Dark Soul - to create an entirely new world, one that has never been fathomed before. Given the evidence telling us Gael has been around since the age of gods, I believe he knew the state the Dark Soul was in, and what he had to do in order to utilise it for the new painting. He could have known about how the Dark affected Manus and Artorias but I think regardless of that he knew it would drive him to ruin. This is the reason why he chose you to complete his quest. Eons of endless death and rebirth led Gael to develop this plan for change. And is it not change and adaptability that defines the power of humanity? He did what no other dared. Gael is the epitome of human capability and hope despite his tale only being known by one other - you. And he was right. We thank him. Everyday. Because without him, there would be no ambiguous ending and therefore little to no hope for another Souls game. A true hero.

Makes you wonder what the actual fuck took him so long to find Filianore's Church, especially after we clear the way to it, made even more odd at the fact that Gael is hinted to have at least made it to the Shared Grave bonfire judging by his final cloak scrap waypoint mark before us. Did the Spears lock up the Church the moment we got sent to the future or something? Because that would have been a hell of a dick move/hilarious event to stop Gael for so long that he had to indiscriminately kill everything until the end of time just to wait out the door lock's lifespan.

Interesting that once Gael goes hollow in phase 2, his purpose in seeking out the pigment and then drawing you to the end of time to slay him so you could bring it back to the painter being complete.. THAT is when he strikes the pose of an old knight and starts fighting like a 'human' would again. Prior to that, he fought more like what a hollow would. Once he actually hollows, he fights like he would have always fought in the past. That part always got to me. I also never understood how Gael could be considered hollow when in essence he has damned near all the human souls in the world, all the pieces of the Dark Soul, combined into one within him. If anything that would be the exact opposite of hollow..

I'm very late to the party but I thought of a nice parallel: Gael is to the Dark Soul as the player is to the First Flame in DS1, and the Painting is the equivalent of the Kiln. We were this lowly undead who at first was just hanging around and didn't have much purpose, but as we got stronger senpais all around noticed and we were asked to take upon the task of linking/stealing the flame, which is basically going around collecting all its remnants and murdering their owners when they refuse to comply to build it up inside us so it's whole again and then feeding it to the Flame in the Kiln. Gael was a slave knight to the gods, who most likely was also just hanging around being unimpressive until he was left unemployed by their disappearance. Then as Vaati stated he eventually found his way to Ariandel where he was waifu-baited by the little painter's mother (because the painter herself doesn't seem to give too much of a f***, but she has some lines which imply her mother was also knowledgeable in the whole worldpainting thing, and who knows maybe Friede killed the mother for it) to beget the Dark Soul which would be able to create a new and better world. Gael then learns that the Dark Soul has been pulverized across a gazillion humans/pigmies and hunts every single one of them down and absorbs the dark soul within them, becoming fit to be the Dark Soul's equivalent of a Lord of Cinder. You can tell when you meet him that he's become this massively powerful being, nothing like the shriveled little dude he was when he first started. The player characters (Chosen Undead and Ashen ones) don't change much in appearance for gameplay reasons, but you could imagine that the lvl 100 you that stepped onto Gwyn's door at the kiln was an absolute monster and looked as badass as your imagination allows, because at that point you have literally stomped all the most powerful gods and heroes and absorbed their power. Anyways, Gael then collected most or all of the Dark Soul and sacrificed himself by having his blood drained and delivered to the girl, who paints a new setting with it. This is already a much more "cold, dark and gentle" way of kickstarting a reality than having a dude blow up in flames in a giant kiln, so maybe the Painted World of Dicklicker9000 has potential for not being as much of a violent fiesta as the Age of Fire was. Anyways thank you for reading my essay if you did. I'd love to hear everybody's thoughts on this, even though it probably isn't that original of an idea.

The saddest part of this is Vaati's farewell. The dude has been a staple of my Dark Souls experience for like 4 years. I would play the game. Wonder about it. Then watch a Vaati video to clarify or sometimes argue an alternate perspective of the story. Vaati's farewell was frighteningly final. I need his voice and his reason for... Ever I hope. Vaati's skills are amazing and undoubtedly useful in other industries. I'd watch a nature documentary with a Vaati commentary any day. Or anything with voice acting. IDK I just don't want to forget this voice or way of telling a story. It feels like the end of an amazing book and IDK how to handle it.

Actually I'm 100% sure because of "Skill: Feasting Branch Use souls to weave a sharp branch to fillet prey." they say "I shall partake" only when they summon the feasting branch and try to kill you, presumably to then eat you.

Gwyn was a loving fatherly sun who valantly burned himself alive to allow the fire to burn...And in reality, He was but a coward, Someone who hated humans, Someone who feared the abyss. Someone who sinned and toyed with the natural order of the world to further his own insecurities. Gael was a Monster. A pointless undead who hunted and slaughtered those he wanted in order to gain his own selfish human desires...But in reality, He was a sad man, With a iron resolve who worked and did unimaginable things in order to complete a cause he thought Nobel. Dark souls was always a story about Gods oppressing those they feared, Only to be consumed swiftly by those without fear of the dark. because, I believe, At least in the beginning, The dark was a far more calming place, Far more calming then the flames of a bonfire.

Now that we've had the chance to examine all the dark souls lore we may ever get, would you consider doing another Lorethrough of all 3 souls games? That would be amazing

An audiobook would be pretty neat. Imagine driving somewhere and just getting to listen Vaati's voice and here him talk about the lore of Dark Souls everywhere you go.

If VaatiVidya wrote a comprehensive... tome... compiling all the Dark Souls lore out there... shit take my money. I would hope he brings together a lot of fans and content creators to collaborate with for some dynamic perspective. Might even lead to a Dark Souls series of movies that would be utterly horrifying to watch.

I have such conflicting feelings towards Gael, viewing him both as a person and then as a character. As a character he's great and amazingly tragic, but as a person... ... Goddammit man. I thought we were gonna fight the Primordial Serpents together or some shit. But here you go off and just start eating people and become an absolutely horrific monster and just expect me to clean up your mess for you. Never even stopping to see if there were some other, better way. I cry for you and I absolutely detest you for betraying me in such a personal way. 10/10.

I'm not sure you can count it a betrayal. He must have known what consuming the Dark Soul would do to him, would turn him into, and yet he didn't hesitate. Given his age, he probably knew there was no other way to unite the dark soul but the consumption of blood. For it is the blood that contains the soul. He sacrificed his humanity and his sanity in an attempt to create a better world. *manly sniffles and wibbles*

FurnaxIkki but he trusted you to uphold the birth of a world that is (very possibly) truly permanent due to it having been made with the blood of the dark soul. In a way, he had more faith in you than anything

Man, after years, those lines at 8:40 still hit deep in me. The power in those words and the trembling voice at the end of the phrase perfectly portrait Shira's will of duty and resentment. I always remember that VA line and it ALWAYS gives me chills.

For the painting is a dark, and gentle world. Painted with blood and the blood of the dark soul. A world painted in blood is but blood. Soon a sea would over take it. Not yet. Not until the blood has been spilled. As Aldrich foresaw there was a sea of dark. Painted with the blood of man. A layered world haunted by the very thing that gave it life. Blood.

"One day, flames will dance across the darkness" I think when you consider that in Dark Souls, areas have eternal night or eternal day, this means you created a day-night cycle or the lords of cinder's souls became stars.

As cool as it would be for them to make a game off that premise, elden ring probably isn't it. 1. Just based off the fact that miyazaki said himself he is done with the souls series and miyazaki is directly working on elden ring, probably means it has nothing to do with dark souls. He has been very verbal in the past about wanting to do something that isn't dark souls. 2. Also based off the fact that george r.r martin wrote a lot of the lore for elden ring is another hint its unrelated to dark souls, because why would he collaborate with someone to write lore for a game with lore thats already been established. 3. Elden ring sounds like a completely new game with completely different lore/setting, and if a game were to come out based off the continuation of the painted world from the blood of the dark soul, it would still have dark souls lore, considering everyone/anything who would enter the painting would be from the dark souls universe, regardless of how new/different the painted world is, all lore would still have to stem from dark souls. Unless they made it so far into the timeline of the painting that all the lore from the souls series is irrelevant, but then whats the point of even making elden ring the painted world if they're wouldn't be any connection? Then again this is just speculation by me and i could be completely wrong, guess we'll see when there is more information.
