@@McGeistly It is so stupid that the bosses cant be reset. From software being idiots for not considering the potential people might play for and actually, dare I say, enjoy the boss fights. May I have the nerve to suggest that I might be busy going to work and school and dont wanna start a new game every time I wanna fight the nameless king solo. Somebody once told me that it makes fighting the bosses more special cause you have to come a long way to fight them. My very reasonable response being that this cant be the case as I dont ever take the time to redo the entire game to do the one thing i wanna do, so its less special cause I never do it. If I did redo the game and got to that boss I would more likely be pissed I had to commit the time to somthing I dont wanna do in or to get to the relatively short lived thing I did wanna do. The REAL reason for having to redo the entire game to fight a boss solo is cause they dont want you to fight the boss solo. What they want you to do is be a phantom which less people like myself would do if resetting the bosses was an option. Rather then giving you a good reason to be a phantom, like a unique experience(as in not a 4 times easier boss fight but one that actually challenges you in a different way), they instead manipulate players into doing so should they dare decide they prefer to only a handful of late game bosses. I find it hard to understand that they make this work of art game that is so fun to play and then decide to ruin the potential enjoyment in order to accommodate this trash excuse for a pvp experience. An experience I ONLY take part in if i wanna do some boss fights. Overall I enjoy the game less and play alot less then I otherwise would all cause of the garbage pvp ruining my ability to go and play the portions of the game I want to play.

And you didnt even mention the best part: They teach you, the player, that they are still human. Their poise is not infinite, and their backs are exposed if they are alone after finishing a combo. These are just, people. People who have been horribly twisted, mind you, but people nonetheless. In a world where everything is so alien, so monsterous, so unexplained, its the little things you do know that make the world so much deeper. Also the Farron Greatsword is AMAZING because not only does it usalize the boss moveset, it innovates on it in a way that makes it feel its own. You arent just somehow doing everything the boss could, you are using the tools from a defeated foe in ways that are inspired by their attacks, but not exact. The parry, the latter hits of the L1 string, the way that R1 and L1 share a combo string leading into some really cool things. Abyss watchers, for me, were my reason for buying the game. The rest of it is amazing too, but they are what drew me in. My first character was dedicated to being a continuation of the watchers, I made up some bs fanlore for them and everything. Before the final fight, I did the collapse emote infront of the throne where you put the Watcher's ashes. Usually, when I play a souls game, I like to get to the part where im wrecking ass as fast as I can. But with the watchers, I just couldnt NOT take a moment to pay respect. @@ZaCloud-Animations___she-her Its been a while since I first came up with it (and I didnt write it down for some reason, probably because I was too busy playing the game) but I remember the basic structure of it: Long story short, Rose (the character), is not technically an abyss watcher. She never made contact with the blood, and as such, did no go absolutely bonkers like the rest of them. She was killed by them regardless, but her body ended up at the start of the game, rather than any other normal grave. So, she has vauge memories of being an abyss watcher, and belives she still is one, hense the reason she uses their armor and weapon. She also only used embers on second phases of boss fights to stay in-line with the true AWs. Like I said, some real BS fanlore, because I know next to nothing about the actual lore.

I would love to hear your thoughts about Pontiff Sulyvahn as I think he is technically the big bad of Dark Souls 3. Using some wierd flame to dominate what's left of Anor Londo, purging the Darkmoon Knights, cursing people into beasts, etc. He also has Aldrich, the giant man-eating slime of a Lord of Cinder thay he seemingly uses as a weapon of mass destruction and his cult of corrupt Way of White Clerics. Sulyvahn's a busy guy.
@lemeres24787 жыл бұрын
While pontiff might be the overall cause, the ultimate boss of every dark souls is simple- human failure. You are always team B- the big, important, noble man has failed due to some weakness. Often, it is a moral weakenss (the brothers were willing to sacrifice the world so they could have eachother, the king is afraid of his wife, and god overestimated his ability to handle things). Everything else is a symptom or just more messes to add to the pot.

As much as I agree with you, I think that a big part of the reason why Dark Souls 3's bosses are so much better is because you're not *supposed* to be able to memorize their patterns like in the previous games. That's one of my biggest complaints for DS1, actually, since the bosses' combos were so on-rails that I could eventually tell their entire combos (the few there were) from the first split second of the initial attack. Fighting the same foe on a second playthrough usually felt more like a chore than a battle, since the opponent hardly had anything unique and clever to surprise me with. Pontiff is one of my clear favorites because of this, since he is such a blatant exception to this silent rule. Everything he does to kill you feels dynamic and non-scripted: he can change his patterns as he sees fit, and can continue a combo whenever he thinks it'll give him the upper hand. It makes me feel like I'm not fighting some generic monster, but an actual, competent fighter.
@davex59696 жыл бұрын
And that's a great thing because it gives you some kind of situational skill, not a dodging and attacking script, and I think that's a behaviour picked up from Bloodborne bosses, which are erratic and hard to predict.

Dark Souls 3 has several instances where enemies with glowing red eyes will fight anything and everything, like they're hollowed by the Abyss. The Abyss Watchers have that in the first phase with the third Watcher. It plays out for players too with the Mound Maker covenant. Only thing I'll make a small comment on is that I wouldn't necessarily describe memorising enemy attack patterns as bashing your head against a brick wall. Memorisation certainly is a big part of Dark Souls combat. In fact, the process of going from finding an enemy impossibly difficult to beat, to dancing around them like they're nothing is what makes the game so addictive. But as I've played more Dark Souls as they came out I've realised that you can completely skip the initial step people often make of "Oh, looks like I can attack! Oh whoops, he did a follow up and now I'm dead. How was I supposed to know that???" You certainly can learn by making lots of mistakes, of course, but if you're patient with each new encounter, you certainly can "play it safe" and make far fewer trips back to the bonfire. The key is just being super patient studying attacks while focusing entirely on defence, until you're sure you can spot safe openings. Even the most difficult souls bosses can be beaten in very few tries like this. Of course, this playstyle is completely unintuitive. For most people, the quicker the threat is dead, the less attacks they have to dodge and the less chance at making a mistake, they think. Which is true, except it is 10x more likely that you're going to make a mistake with an attack, than with defence. Attacking requires a lengthy chunk of time, depending on your weapon, usually requires you to be positioned right next to the boss, and locks you in an animation. Defending requires watching the boss and timing a roll. Even healing at the right moment is harder to get right than dodging, especially in the later games that give bosses specific attacks to punish running and healing. Speaking of which, of course, as the games have advanced the designers have put in specific traps on enemies to prevent the same offensive strategies that worked previously. But for the most part, dodging is still just as easy (or EASIER if you stomached Dark Souls 1 with mid or fat roll). Basically, I just wanted to clear up the idea that combat is somehow trial and error. Nearly every mistake you can make in these games comes from a false and unfounded assumption about enemy capabilities (carried over from other action games or even previous souls games). And while dying is an inevitable learning experience, it's not the only way to git gut.

My favorite is Yhorm, not for his fight itself, but for the lore behind him. Yhorm was the king of a land that did not want him. A land where Yhorm’s people had been tortured and killed. The humans of that land saw him not as a leader, but merely a warrior strong enough to protect them. Despite this Yhorm fought valiantly to earn the trust of these people. He even went as far as to give them a sword known for killing giants, for if he ever failed to accomplish his job in linking they fire, they will be able to kill him. Yhorm fought for their trust, yet when it was time to link the flame, everyone burned to ashes. Was Yhorm not worthy of the flame? Was a giant not supposed to link the fire? All I know is that even through tireless work for the kingdom, he failed in every way they said he would... “Yhorm, old pal...” Siegmire

which is why i use cheat engine + agression mod + Health x2. it gives all bosses Bloodborne level health pool and makes the fight just more fun and not just who kills who first.
I'm doing my first STR build, and I killed the fiery watcher in 6 hits with a +4 heavy great club (I don't remember my STR stat). I was so sad. I've killed every boss in one try, and got help on vordts because he's boring and I wanted to get it over with, the deacons for the same reason, and Wolnir because I can never beat him and he can suck it for all I care. And yes, pontiff first try without a single parry, and only one estus sip.
@ambitiousjokester6 жыл бұрын
I've said it before and people get so salty about it, but the reason the abyss watchers fight and cutscene feel so awesome and fresh is because it's very very similar to bloodborne. Even the way the boss introduces itself. Kills something, looks down, looks up, bows/salutes or whatever. That's every humanish bloodborne boss right there.

What about a door mimic? Like, a large humanoid thing like the mimic and when you go to open it you'll be pulled into the door and chomped. If you hit it before opening it, it'll stand up and use the door as a sort of shield and attack by doing shield bashes. There could be variants that use dual doors (for areas where there's double doors). The reward for killing them would be progressing through the level, or access to a room with an item in it, etc.

When I first saw that door I didn’t have any potions left and was almost dead. I thought “this is too close to a bonfire to be a boss fight so what the hay” I had summoned a guy from the bonfire who loved backstabs. I watched the cut-scene and realized that this was an actual bosfight. I was so scared. I didn’t have any estus left and I was one hit away from biting it. Needless to say I just ran. I ran away as much as I could and dodged when I needed to. The summon kept on backstabbing and I turned around to shoot a magic bolt every now and then. I thought that I finally beat him and then “Boom!” He gets all big and scary. So I just ran and ran and he was agroed on me the whole time.so the summon was never in much danger and he just kept backstabbing and stuff. So that’s how I beat the abyss watchers on my first time with no potions almost no health and a single summon. I know that it’s not that impressive being as I only turned to attack a few times, but I thought it was a fun story.
