Believe the reason Hellkite killed each other is they are already coded to do damage to any enemy, If you the player and normal enemies are coded like teams. Hellkite is coded the be not on a team.

I did an early great scythe run and got wrecked in the catacombs. Pinwheel was brutal! Scythe was very satisfying but I gave up on OOSS and killed them with soul spears instead. I managed to kill artorias with iron flesh+firestorm but gave up on manus
