Long ago, during the Age of Ancients, the Dragons ruled a boring, one dimensional setting. The Dragon version of Tolkien was said to have once put to pen the idea of a tree that was sort of a brownish gray, instead of just gray. He was immediately executed for his dangerous, heretical ideas. It would take the four Lord Souls - weird spirit things that some naked zombies found in a fire - to put an end to this era of stupidity. The Souls transformed these naked, on-fire zombies into naked, on-fire humans that would quickly learn just how on-fire they truly were.
The Furtive Pygmy was the least popular of all the four Lords. He was slammed against many lockers, and was totally turned down by the Witch of Izalith when he asked her to prom. But the Pygmy understood how to play the long con, and set a dark plan in motion: to have sex with countless numbers of zombies. Like, thousands of them. No butterface was too stank for the Furtive Dick, in those days. From this long period of weird, secret corpse fucking, there arose all of humanity.
All humans today are descendents of a single corpse fucker. The gods - descendents of the other three Lords - were totally freaked out by this. From their big ass ancient city, they would rule over this sea of incestuous corpse fucking murder-happy pedophile weirdos, who also were all midgets. This would later be known as the glorious Age of Fire. Eventually, the gods would leave the capital of this age of horrifying sexual frenzy. Human historians would be totally confused as to why.
And so was set, the stage for the possible beginning of a new, Dark Age. Where supposedly it'll still be corpse fucking, but without light? I guess? Set forth, noble sex weirdo, to claim your birthright and fulfill the dark wishes of the Furtive Pygmy. It'll be rad. Probably.

I only recently learned (largely from reading "The 8th Son, Are You Kidding Me?") that a duke is actually really high up in terms of nobility. It goes Monarch (King/Queen), their immediate family (Princes/Princesses), and then Dukes. So making Seath a duke was literally the highest title that Gwyn could give him, and likewise granted Seath a lot of privileges/leeway in Gwyn's kingdom. We also learn in DS1 that Gwyn gave parts of the Light Soul, HIS OWN SOUL, to his immediate family & most trusted allies (Gwyn's Children, Seath, the Four Kings, various unseen but referenced gods, etc.) I think this portrays Gwyn as a fairly cool dude. Charitable and respectable, at the very least. Perhaps even honorable, if he was especially good natured in life (we have sparse details there). He's still the actual, literal antagonist of the entire DS timeline (as of the revelations in DS3), but it's hard for me to hate Gwyn. He was just a guy who happened upon the source of all that was good in the world, and he tried to make that good last. I think it's hard to objectively judge him. He did about as much good as bad in life, and sacrificed himself to save the world he loved. I'd be interested to know how many players actually hate Gwyn after playing through all the games, considering all that we know now. Edit for minor spelling/grammar, also can't believe I wrote all this out. What is wrong with me.

I always thought of him as a good guy. The only reason Lordran fell into disarray is because Gwyn had to leave the kingdom and send his knights to deal with the growing abyss. And he only left the kingdom to literally sacrifice himself in an effort to keep the dark from encroaching on the world. Hes only a boss because he knows that the chosen undead (us) that collected all of the original souls is attempting to end the age if man, making us a threat to humanity. He may not even know the world is ending, his kingdom was still alive when he left it. He just sees some asshole trying to usher in an age of dark and tried to stop it.

I don't think Gwyn is bad guy per-say. I pity him more than anything; he was just a scared old man who tried to hold on to whatever he built for himself, even if he screwed up the world trying. Regardless of the consequences, I feel that's a very grounded and human choice to make. He did sacrifice himself after all, but that doesn't absolve him of ensuring humanity could never grow, thus, albeit accidentally, creating the undead curse by introducing the darksign

Gwynerear is a daughter of Gwyn, and they are all giants. Gwyn looks small in the final fight, because the first flame consumes him. Gwynerear left Anor Londo when the crisis began. Gwyndolyn created an illusion of Gwynerear and the sun to convince everyone that the world is not dying.

In Dark Souls, all of the characters (who are human) have a very human design, no exaggerated proportions. Then you see Gwnevere, who looks like a goddess,(because she is a goddess) and you are supposed to be taken in by her. A first time player would have no idea that the entire undead quest is a trap to lure you to your doom. I didn't even know about Kaathe, the illusions or the dark/good ending until my second playthrough.
