Dark Souls Lore: Siegmeyer
In the final episode, we discuss the Onion Knight and Onion Bro - Siegmeyer of Catarina, and his daughter, Sieglinde AKA Lin, also of Catarina. I felt it would be fitting to end this little series with a more human element. No dragons, no gods, just a man and his daughter. An undead and a human, and their journey throughout Lordran.

I actually see Seigmeyer as one of the most competent characters in Dark Souls. Of the times you meet him, he's only ever stumped by actual enemies once in Anor Londo. Every other time he's stumped by things that are generally out of his area of expertise, namely puzzles or natural issues. Boulders, gates, poison swamps. He seems to have very few issues combat wise which leads me to believe he's more than capable of fighting his way through Lordran, if it weren't for some obstacles that are kind of out of his control.

No one in Dark Souls is Hollow at the start except the enemies, Hollow is the thing you become when you give up and lose your mind. Undead is what everyone started out as. Then people around you gradually start to become Hollows, like Solaire. Being Undead and being Hollow are different concepts. Being Undead means you're already dead, so when you are "killed', the Darksign brings you back. Being Hollow means that you were Undead, and the Darksign drove you mad.

Methinks that Siegmeyer left to adventure specifically to avoid harming his family should he go hollow. And this got twisted into him thinking that by adventuring, he somehow thought that he could prevent them from dying. That would be why he goes hollow after hearing about his 'wife' dying. Again, he has failed, as he had so many times during the course of the game.

Why is there nothing on letting Siegmeyer kill the chaos eater...? If you do, it preserves his pride, he doesn't go hollow, and Siegelinde gives you a titanite slab when you witness their reunion by the Ash Lake bonfire!

Well, it's very unlikely that he will manage to kill them all on his own. If you help him by taking them all down to low health before he drops in, then yeah. I've never seen him fight them all at 100% health and live, though.

Something that i always found is that Siegmeyer seems as though he is almost sentient (of course a inability due to him being a program) but the way he is coded it seems as though he is always trying to get better, but due to him being a NPC he is unable to do anything apart from his coding. But when we roam around, being in our own mental capacity, we always one up him in a way. His coding seems to me that he is supposed to want to be real...

I'm actually working on another two right now, as it happens! I tallied up all the requests I got (not that it took long!) and the most popular were; Leeroy, Patches, Oswald and Chester. So that should give you a clue as what to expect. Due to extenuating circumstances, the first should be up next week (Saturday the 5th) and it has absolutely nothing to do with GTAV being released! But IRL injuries are involved (nothing serious) and they delayed it a week or so. Also... chocolate dick?

What if he forgot his purpose in Lordran? Isn't one of the first signs of hollowing losing your memory? Perhaps his incompetency is part of this as well? During my playthrough I assumed Siegmeyer was an old man losing his touch but perhaps hollowing has made him a bit out of it and unable to complete the tasks required to progress. If he is slowly going hollow it adds everything up. Add that to your theory and you could say that he gave up and let the ever growing hollowing consume him.

and what about the places you meet him at? (talking about heights) first you meet him ''ground level'' so to speak, then higher up (sens), highest point (Anor londo) and then from there it keeps on going lower and lower, and he eventually dies at the lowest point, ash lake.

A note on the German origins. In addition to the, "Sieg-" prefix to the name, the weapons the two of them are using also have a German heritage, more so the Zweihander than the Bastard sword. The thing that really sold me on the connection however was the helmets used for the Medieval German sport of Kolbenturnier, in which two competitors used wooden clubs to try and hit the top of their opponents helmet. The helmets they use are very similar in shape to the Catarina helmet. Whether this has more lore implications or not I can't be sure but I think it does point strongly to at least a German inspiration for the duo. The developers said that if you summon him against Gwyn (or in other words, if he doesn't go hollow in Izalith) then he will link the fire in his own world. We never see it, but that would be a fitting end for him - he becomes the 'sun' he was seeking.

The way you described Carim and Catarina based on their real world geography gives Dark Souls a whole new freshness in my eyes. My current thinking is that the sequel takes place on a different continent entirely, based on what we've seen of the map and the info we got from the network test (which I talked about in the DaS2 lore vid)

A strange thing happened in my fight against the Chaos Eaters. Siegmeyer survived, and asked my why I didn't run away, and that he would rest. But then he dropped dead, and said his last words about his Little Lin. It was only afterwards that I realized I was poisoned, and he probably was too. Poor man... :(

Alex Kirk Yeah, there's a few different outcomes to that battle. If I want him to survive, I generally kill most of the Chaos Eaters and then let him finish off the last one or two etc

+wally russ Yeah, I kinda agree with that. It's almost like when somebody summons you and you flatten the entire area for them, and then they rush ahead to try and fight a tough enemy - usually getting pancaked in the process.

Zweihander phonetically in Japanese is ツヴァイハンダー(tsuvuaihandaa), and the way it's pronounced is pretty close to the German pronunciation.

I was quite convince the city in the intro was Lordron, the center piece is incredibly similar looking to the architecture and size of Anor Londo. I haven't looked enough to check for any specific detail that may repeat but that was my thought for sure.

I seem to recall that when the game came out, or in pre-release builds, it had a "YOU HOLLOWED" thing coming up on screen when you died or something. I distinctly remember that, because I (at the time) had no idea what it meant and was terribly confused. It got patched out or something, you know how they always change with the text? Like "You defeated" became "Victory achieved!" etc

To be fair, he might've not known about the bells. Especially since the only people that arrive by raven (cut content) are the player, Solaire, and Oscar. Everyone else got to lordran via their own means. So how could've he known about the bells. Except maybe the undead parish.

Maybe he leaves in order to protect his family. His adventuring is a reason to him keep from returning home. He goes to Lordran, a place so unbelievably out of the way that surely his family would always be safe from him. Except he daughter finds him, putting herself in the most dangerous possible place, bringing news of her wife's death. So not only has he failed to keep his wife alive but he has also caused his daughter to be in the most dangerous position possible. Until his daughter arrives and tells him of his wife's death he falls into despair. Not only that but this would mean that his pride of family and pride of him being their protector are smashed. With this knowledge he falls apart and, with no purpose or hope he hollows completely. Just a thought.

That is what I am thinking, yeah. I feel like the more determined they are, the further they are from hollowing - Solaire was starting to doubt himself, and then we soon after can find him turning hollow from the maggot. If he had found that maggot in say... the undead burg? I doubt it would've ended up the same way.

I don't think it was a case of damaging his pride that causes him to hollow out. I think that undead will set an impossible task to maintain a purpose and when you help them complete their task they lose their purpose. Then they lose the last string holding onto their humanity, that's why merchants maintain their sanity while their body corrupts around them.

To be completely honest, this might sound a little stereotypical, but I always assumed that Catarina was based on either Ireland, Scotland, Wales or Romania. I've also thought the hollow player character was like the Undead Merchants. Physically hollow, bit still mentally sound.

Has anyone ever gone through Siegmeyers plot but killed Sieglinde? I've never done it since she gives us one of the few guaranteed Titanite Slabs but does it just cancel out the questline all-together and we never see Siegmeyer again? Or does he continue on unaware that his daughter was ever there and the player winds up having to kill his hollowed form in Ash Lake like we do a lot of the NPC's that eventually leave Fire Link? (And a thought does occur that if it's the latter it certainly gives a lot more weight to the fact that the player is the catalyst for him going hollow, and not the news of his wife).

Hey Silver Mont, I have a theory regarding Hollowing: what if one's purpose helps determine how long they have to hollow? Siegmeyer is only adventuring around for fun as far as we know, and Solaire is clearly searching for his own 'sun'. Yet how long have they been doing their goals for? If it's been a long time before the game, then maybe the laughter does show some sanity slippage? I also feel that the undead who don't laugh have a more 'greater' purpose so they take longer to hollow.

The whole pride aspect explains this storyline the best. It's MMORPGs and such in general, some players will ask you to help them slay a boss or give them some items/equipment. Others will shun such ideas thinking that it defeats the purpose of playing the game if you just get your hand held through all of it. Also Siegmeyer kinda makes you wonder if he's really such a nice guy or if he's kind of a douchebag to his close ones when he insists to go on with his carefree lifestyle. His wife died, his daughter is desperately looking for him risking hers own life in doing so, and he's still running off to have fun in his adventures. Some would think "it's his life (unlife, ha!) - it's his choice what he does". Others will think he's selfish.

Silver Mont Selfish may be kind of a strong word, yeah. Let's say inconsiderate then. =p The weirdest part about his story though is that he's the only NPC methinks that's mentioned to have been killed before and come back non-hollowed from it. Although it's a game mechanic and mentioned in the Darksign item's description, most of the time the Undead coming back from death isn't something brought up too often throughout the story. Personally I think letting Siegmeyer die rushing the Chaos Eaters is the "best" ending his story can have. We don't see him again since and he does drop some personal equipment and humanity when he dies, so it's kind of unclear if this was a final death for him. If it was, maybe for him this was still the most favorable way to go, seeing the man gets to retain his honor. Which is kind of selfish (argh) to his close ones yet again, but in the world of Dark Souls that's far happier an ending than many other stories get. Matter of player's own mentality again on where their values lie. Would it be better to let the man live another day albeit in shame, or let him die for his own personal pride as he desires to?

Seems to me that Sigmeyer is searching for a pourpose as he always has been. Yet unaware that he is close to being fully hollow. Hollowing looks to be a gradual process. Sieglinde (LIN) knows her father is close to being fully hollow and that is why she is tiring to save him from that fate. Perhaps she has killed him before because of how close Sigmeyer almost fully hollow by that time. We know that human are creatures of habit. Perhaps Sigmeyer has been adventuring for so long that he knows nothing else. Each time he dies he inches closer to being fully hollow yet the process unaware to him. I don’t think Sigmeyer ever mentions anything in regards to being hollow or it’s process. It’s possible that Sigmeyer is unaware that his wife is dead. I like you’re theory that it’s because of us that Sigmeyer becomes hollow but I don’t think this is the case. Hollowing is a known as direct result of dyeing over and over again, not a result of getting your pride hurt. I think Sigmeyer is unaware he is gradually hollowing and looses it completely after hearing the news of his current state and the fate of his wife.

I am replaying DS for the coming of DS3 right now, and today, Seigmeyer killed himself. For a moment I was lamenting my own incompetence and dread the moment when I shall rescue Sieglinde what I shall to her, despite I have absolutely no control of how the characters would reply. Damnit Seigmeyer and you foolish pride.

on the topic of being able to reverse hollowing and lore, I've always made the assumption is that's what sets you apart from the other undead, is your ability to reverse your hollowing.

It is also possible that Siegmeyer faked his own death in Ash lake. Usually, when you kill someone who has gone hollow, like the Crestfallen Warrior or Oscar, they slowly fade away, and eventually disappear, leaving only an item or humanity. In Ash Lake, you can see Siegmeyer's corpse on the ground. Also, though I have not checked myself, I have heard that you can still see him breathing if you angle the camera inside his helmet.

I think the reason his corpse is there is so that we know he's dead. That scene wouldn't have such an effect, if it was just Lin standing there by herself.

The city in the game intro is actually Boletaria, if you you compare that scene with the one from Demon's Souls you'll notice that they are identical, so yeah, it's Boletaria.

Has anyone noticed the similarities between the cut encounters with the onion-bro in DS1 and the onion-bro is DS3? You were going to meet him stuck in a cage, which is also one of the encounters in DS3. You were also going to meet him when he was perplexed about getting past an enemy, while in Dark Souls 3 your first encounter is meeting the onion-bro having issues getting past a contraption.

Not sure if this has been mentioned before but in traditional weddings it is mentioned to those getting married that "Death do us part". Perhaps Sieglinde was made a bastard by her own father whom has become undead (seeing as you must first be dead to become undead). Not saying His first death had anything to do with him becoming Undead or that Sieglinde was said "first kill". also, the whole father creating the bastard/abdonded family of adventurer theme seems to play into one another too well.

Yeah I'm with you on that. Also If this theory has credit It does baffle me about some npcs, since I would think that Laurentius could make it to the Fair Lady and how Griggs could have followed Logan but just sorta gave up. Any way we look at it, Hollowing seems so simple but it's just so complex, how the npcs have more time as opposed to others and such.
