Dark Souls Lore: Marvelous Chester
Carim Part 1
First in a three-part mini-series about the land of Carim and its occupants! In the first episode, we look at Marvelous Chester and the Earl of Carim. I also try and explain the English peerage system and do some cospvp as Chester, which sucks. And because it wasn't very clear, the hacker in Smough's armour was the same one who wore the Giantdad get-up, he was wearing something different each time he invaded.
Look forwards to the next episode! And how on earth do you pronounce Shotel!?
Like the awesome picture of Chester? You can grab it on shirts/hoodies and stickers here!

To be serious though, as cool as it would be to have a chester cameo in Bloodborne or even references to Dark Souls I, I feel like bloodborne will more likely have references to Demon's Souls. Have you noticed that the devs almost never mention Dark Souls when talking about Bloodborne, but they do reference Demon's Souls all the time? Perhaps this is simply because Sony is telling them to do this (Taking credit for a game they originally didn't want to release stateside, lol) but maybe...

WAIT A MINUTE. Knights of Carim never use a shield. In Bloodborne, no one in Yharnam uses a shield. Chester looks like a hunter. Everyone from Carim has an odd twisted sense of humor. Yharnam folk also have a twisted sense of humor. Could it be that Carim is an older name for Yharnam?

Here's a little theory. Chester was a man of Yarnem, wealthy but untrusting of others, having seen the very worst crimes humans had been capable of committing. His accent and choice of vocabulary are certainly reminiscent of the Yarnemites of Bloodborne. Imagine he explored the dark chalice dungeons, deep below the land, in search of the old ones and their famed blood, but instead found remnants of some primeval darkness far older still, the abyss. The last scraps of the darkness of manus, deep below the concerns of modern men. As he gazed at this anomaly, a 'shadowy limb' snatched him and brought him to the past. Relieved of having escaped the troubles of the great hunt, but unconcerned with the troubles of the bloody mushroom and the abyss, he does his best to relax, always keeping humanity he finds and never trusting those he meets. Having run out of bullets long ago, he crafted two elegant crossbows using the advanced weaponry concepts invented in Yarnem. He avoids close combat...
@OuterRimPride
@OuterRimPride 8 жыл бұрын
So as to not remind himself of the bloodlust seen in the hunters of his time, to keep himself calm and collected. In sharp contrast to the beasts and hollows he has met, he wears still his black, civilized coat, his elegant top hat, his classy ball mask, and his leather suitcase filled with souvenirs of his journey through time. His cloths are of a style popular far, far in the future, his weaponry and secret darts unique to himself, and his mask snickering at the problems of lordran, childsplay compared to the greusome atrocities he might have experienced in the future. Adventuring aristocrat, untrusting wanderer, crestfallen timetraveler, medieval hipster, and part-time asshole, Chester is the most interesting man in Lordran. (After Smough, of course.)

Silver Mont i agree, maybe he was a prototype of bloodborne hero, and devs were interested how much players like him, and i think most of the players like his look, even the whole dark souls DLC resembles bloodborne, there are no hollows (as far as i know expect the chosen undead) but there are corrupted and twisted creatures, just lik in bloodborne, even in looks they are similar to bloodborne, i mean the creatures also, it looks to me that the developres are selling the same game, but it looks to me as if they are trying to perfect both the gameplay AND the story, first demon souls then dark souls I & II then bloodborne, all three games look as if they were sort of a series, but officals say they are different game, but the story always similar to others, so its kind of cheap way to make money, but i think most of the team wants to perfect the game and the story wich is forgivable, mostly becuase they are making great game that entertain us,still,kind of wierd

Here's the thing. I don't think Chester is from Yharnam, but I do think Yharnam is in Carim(or at least the Carim in the future), and is one of it's major cities (such as Izalith, New Londo or Oolacile are technically part of Lordran)

from my point of view, i imagined carim to look kind of gloomy and foggy but filled with the most illustrious and intricately designed churches in the world. lautrec and oswald are clearly very religious so i imagine there might be some politics going on between the various religious sects and that some churches might look different depending on which gods/goddesses they were designed to worship for.

Silver Mont I always imagined Carim to be somewhat similar to Finland, or some other cold and densely forested place with long, dark winters. Although, an interesting thing to note is that the shotel is actually an East African weapon, specifically from Ethiopia, and like its in-game counterpart was designed to arc around shields to stab the wielder's opponent in the lungs or kidneys. However, given how the in-game skin tone for Carim is by far the palest, I cannot imagine Carim being the Dark Souls equivalent of East Africa.
@SilverMont
@SilverMont 10 жыл бұрын
Vlakvark Yeah, it's interesting when you compare it to real world places and items etc. We know that Dark Souls 2 has a coastal-town, so it's possible we'll see some Scandinavian influences there. Also, in a semi-related note, I've generally imagined Catarina to be something like a Central-American country. Although I'm not sure how that would really work with their heavy armour... then again, the armour does look like it'd have lots of room for air to flow!
@CriticalFeline

Silver Mont I had a similar thought to Catarina (based more off the default character appearance than anything), but instead of Central America thought more along the lines of Moorish Spain, since I always thought of the Dark Souls world as very Euro-Centric. However, the only characters from Catarina we encounter both have obviously Germanic names and wield a german sword. Perhaps Catarina is simply a massive land, with lot of ethnic diversity?

@livale8337
@livale8337 9 жыл бұрын
THEORY! (or at least Fan-Canon) Time is convoluted in Lordran, and so is Space. As such, you can come and go between dimensions and timelines. This also holds true for Yharnam most likely, but wait, there's more. Mannus pulls Chester from wherever he was, and the same with us. His clothing style matches that of Yharnamites, as does his voice for the most part, and also his fighting style. Yharnam was built over the ruins of an old and powerful civilization, who fell due to their abuse of the Old Blood. Lordran fell due to it's own hubris. Most people would be utterly distraught and confused if they were just pulled through time by an angry hand with eyes, but Chester doesn't seem all that phased by it. He also must have been in Lordran or at least the surrounding area to be aware of Knight Artorias. So he can't have just been snatched up during Bloodborne. Conclusion: Something happened in Yharnam that sent Chester to the world of DS, most likely the same thing that brought Patches into Yharnam in the form of a spider with a human head. Chester spends some time in Carim, the closest equivalent of his homeland, before becoming undead. He then travels to Lordran to avoid his fellow aristocrats from sending him to an asylum. And once there, gets forced through time and space again, possibly because his scent bares traces of the Old Ones (he seems like someone who'd worship them) which Mannus may well identify with. This is less of a theory and more just random fancanon I just made up, but still

+Liam Powell it's probably just one of the concepts for Project Beast that Miyazaki played with during development of dks 1 dlc. Since hoonters didn't used crossbows nor in bloodborne nor in expansion trailer that is unlikely that he is actually a hunter, u might speculate that he lost his firearm but that's just silly.
@livale8337
@livale8337 9 жыл бұрын
Сергей Федотов Why would it be silly? It's fairly common for people to stick to something similar to something their familiar with. Especially in fiction. In SAO2, for example, Kirito stuck with swordplay in a game where there is only 1 or 2 bladed weapons. It's especially prominent in gamers, when transferring different games most gamers look for the weapon they are most familiar with, even if it's a completely different time or setting. I always go for a bow in medieval based games because I like playing a sniper in modern based games. Chester having a crossbow makes sense, he likely had a flintlock rifle and upon it either breaking or being lost he got the next best thing.

i really feel that chester was from bloodborne since as soon as AOTA was released they started bloodborne and chester uses a advanced futuristic sniper crossbow his fighting style was much fast passed he hates shield users as in bloodborne shields dont exist i think... all of chesters moves make you bleed and he wants your blood like bloodborne he jumps and spins and dashes and doesn't drop a humanity he wears all black victorian clothing and wears a V for Vendetta mask which bloodborne and the movie are based in london. I personally believe either chester was from bloodborne or chester inspired the new game bloodborne what do you think Silver Mont?

So, the only reason anyone assumes this man, who seems out of place for the typical Dark Souls world you've seen, is from Carim because... He wields the Sniper Crossbow? I don't think he is from Carim, personally.. I think he's got a much more mysterious place of origin.

I know the lore pretty well. People speculate he is from Carim, but the only proof anyone has that he is from Carim is the Sniper Crossbow, which, honestly, with how items from Carim seem to be pretty well spread out, it seems just as likely he is from anywhere or any-when else.

It only mentions his coat is an "exquisitely sewn aristocratic suit", but every part of his outfit mentions he is "a man of mystery lost in the past", and never mentions Carim or anywhere else for that matter. His Crossbow is from Carim, and he seems to have a thing for vicious and devious actions... But neither actually firmly set him as from Carim.

You are right that the bite rings mention him as Sir Arstor. But the purging stones mention him as "Arstor, the Earl of Carim". I believe that there wasn't one assasination attempt, but two. I think that the first would have been made by a superior, maybe a Viscount. However, it was discovered before it was carried out. Sir Arstor, as one of the conspiritors, became parinoid and created the bite rings because he knew that however he would be punished it wouldn't be direct. After all, it rarely is with Carim. But he wasn't punished because he wasn't known to be a part of it. So he decided to give it another go. He succeded by using curses to overpower the current Earl and became Earl Arstor. It was then he created the purging stone so that if anyone were to ever try the same thing on him he would have a way out. Sadly, this is all speculation and I have nothing to back it up, but it's what I believe.

I learned this in History class: An Earl is below the king in the hierarchy of a country. Earls are mini kings that own and are responsible for a part of land such as villages, towns, cities. Also when the King loses his royalty, one of the Earls may be chosen seeing as the King can suffer loss from family etc. If an Earl fails to protect their land from invasions and rebellions, they will be exiled to a faraway land and are banned to return. Also, there have been cases of Earls rebelling against a King and lose, publicly executed along with their men. My fingers ache.

I always figured Chester was from Carim but set so many years after Dark Souls. This was because while his crossbow is a Carim Sniper Crossbow, he fires it so much more quickly which would suggest it's more mechanically advanced. Of course you could also think that he simply managed to afford a more advanced one by being the Earl.

But sometimes it feels more like a Warf effect. especially in an old-school RPG they hype up a character and he sucks. I was using the Sniper Crossbow and the Avelyn was the one I pulled out on the left hand now and then - you can find it in Duke's Archives, it fires three bolts at once, so it's very good for surprising people. Chester doesn't actually use it, but a Chester build is so useless in PvP I thought I might as well. I thought it was appropriate for him anyway, to have something powerful hidden up his sleeve.

Almost want to believe that _he is a dimensional time traveling Hunter_ ! It would be nice to see a bit more easter eggs in relation between to the two gaming franchises. In way it would make some sense since a handful of fans are in some agreement to Carim being described to be much like one of the places in Bloodborne. Another interesting fact is that I too feel that M.C. is dressed like an early prototype for a hunter since Dark Souls came out long before Bloodborne being first featured in D.S's DLC as I see here and from other fans pointing this out. In a way there's little hints of from software's previous games being referenced in both Bb and DS but then again everything we assume M.C. to be are just theories. It could almost be possible for him to actually have been in Yarhnam before the scourge beast outbreak occurred. So yeah even if they are indeed not set in the same universe it's still an interesting fan theory over all.

What if in Chesters time line, he was the last and final monarch? We know that the person who allows darkness to come becomes hollow to be bested by another monarch. What if he ended the curse? Broke the curse? It could be a reason as to why he knows about the hollows, or maybe because all of this was written history by then or just tales that people thought were fake. What if Mannis brought him back because Chester was that last monarch? If Mannis could kill him, there wouldn't be no last Monarch, darkness would keep coming. Mannis brought him back for a reason. So the cycle of darkness could continue.

Even despite the games not sharing lore, what makes Carim not necessarily Yharnam is that the Yharnamites in the lore developed techniques to hunt beasts, and shields were found inefficient. A very good point! Of course, he is better than the ones we can use - faster reload speed, amongst other things. But that's probably just a gameplay mechanic, but you could always look at it from the viewpoint that he has a more advanced sniper crossbow than what is found in Sen's. I'm not really convinced of it myself, I just think it's an interesting thing to consider. Seeing as how Chester is like a variation of the Fat Ministers, maybe we'll see something similar in Dark Souls 2?
