Great review! I reviewed the Tascam headphones on my channel a while back and said they were terrible, but for under $30 what should you expect?! At $99 it is wildly overpriced. At that price, it should be part of a kit that includes the TH-02 headphones, mic stand, shock mount, and XLR cable. I finally broke down and bought the RE20 for my home office. Probably the last microphone I'll buy.

Vid's not yet out. But the looks of the mic pretty much says it all hahaha

Sounds okay. I wouldn't pay $99 for it, but maybe when it hits a Musicians Friend SDOTD for $29.

Tascam gave up on great products years ago. Unfortunate really. They've come so close on several items. Not that this is one of them (for vocals at least). I've heard that mic on bass cabs and it works very well in that application.

Fisher Price makes a better microphone. Seems like this is the type of mic I would see at Guitar Center for on a flash sale for $29.95.

At this point in time when buying the MixCast 4 mixer, Tascam is giving away this mic and its accessories as a promotion along with their TH-02 headphones and an SD memory card - in this respect it's a good deal. I think the TM-70 sounds pretty decent for spoken word. I have all of these items (among other mixers, interfaces, control surfaces and mics). I'm considering trying the freebie TM-70 to record snare drums and modding the top screen to cover the side holes and maybe fill in that extra space below the capsule. A better solo price point for the TM-70 & shock mount, small desk stand, mic cable is probably, more realistically, $49.99 - $59.99, and $34.99 when on sale periodically. Behringer has dynamic mics for less than that that work well. That all being said, the design is also unusual given its condenser mic body casing look.

You're right, I think the Shure SM57 with A81WS also sounds more massive and powerful than this Tascam. Weird. I have very good recorder from Tascam, Mixcast 4 also looks fine - why this mic is so... average? :O

Compare it to the SM58... and now my mind is made up. There's a very good reason why the 58 is so well respected....

Sir exanple the TM70 it's only less than $50 including accessories. Target market. I got a TM-180 and 280 and both are indistinguishable compared to $1,000+ mics.

I have to keep in mind that this is in the same price class as my sontronics podcast pro in my country. This is absolutely ridiculous. I don't even think that the Shure is that good for the price but if you keep the reselling price in mind it's still a way better option compared to the tascam.

I couldn’t hear a difference at all in the video. I am a big fan of sure, but literally, this video made me want the tascam. It even sounded a little hotter than the sure but not a huge difference at all . I am listening with my phone though.

They both sound pretty indistinguishable. The tascam has a little bit less proximity effect than the sm58.
@johnj.doublej8721Ай бұрын
Tascam have made some beasts through the years, mostly recorders, not microphones, but that SM58 is a very overrated mic, and I had it years ago. In the end there are better than both out there by the same price.
@davidsillars31813 жыл бұрын
Over priced imo. I have had some good Tascam products over the years and still get use out of my old Tascam interface, must be more than ten years old by now. The current marketing strategies, not just Tascam's, seems to be: build 'em cheap, sell' em high and who cares about quality! Shame.

Tascam is not a "cheap" company, they're a decent company that makes solid and affordable stuff for the home market. That's an admirable goal. Marketing a $400.00 dynamic microphone to people, a microphone that they'll have to buy a $120.00 booster to use properly, is not, if you want to make this about attacking whole companies... I don't even have to mention the mic, everybody in "podcasting" knows it... This TM70 sounds as good as an SM58. And if you want to split hairs, the sm57 sounds better than the 58, the 58 just has a big ball on the end of it for troglodytes to slobber on. Aaand.. The sm58 is not the best choice for podcasting, in other words, hearing multiple people speak for a sustained period of time... In a multi mic set up, the hard peak of the 58 and the 57 will multiply and be annoying in your final mix. You can try to eq it out but it may make the mix sound unnatural... but if that's what you can afford they're fine. "The best mic is the mic you got." This tm-80 tames the frequencies that were intentionally placed on the 58 and the 57 for.... LIVE SOUND!! so they could slice their way over music and crowds of people. I can hear this just from your demo. So the "marketing" speak is accurate. It takes that 58 brightness and puts it up higher to accent articulation. The body? "It look like a condenser.." A pointless argument... There's plenty of high quality and reputable microphones that "look like" what they're not and use mass produced mic bodies. Resell value, okay, maybe you have a small point, but personally, I would never buy a used sm58 or 57, why? Because counterfeits are rampant among low end shures... Easily the most counterfeited microphone in the world. I would only buy a new one from an authorized dealer.. or actually I wouldn't, because for $50 to $100.00 more, there are better suited and more reliable options on the used market for "podcasting". Red flags?? Lol... I was just interested in hearing this mic, and for $100.00 yeah, I wasn't expecting the world on a plater, but I see this as more of a hit piece than a review.
