Nice beginner guide but if I may: 2:33 In the "desperate few" you are spending or refilling the "flame" not the "hope". Flame value is what determine if it's you or the enemies who get advantages in a fight. As you said at 13:34 Hope is the experience points to level-up your profile between runs to unlock characters and new items. Hope can be earned just by going as far as possible or with special biome mission. One more tips: Prioritize the level-up of the 5th skill of the plague doctor in the first Inn, it helps managing the stress level of your team, hence their relationhip, and is a must-have for the first few runs.

Flame is the representation of hope, btw. Flame cannot fade because hope will die with it. it's literally said on the start of the game. When it comes to your profile, hope is the equivalent of ex basically, nothing more.

There are a bit more precision to give about the relationship system and it's many interractions : - each decision at a stop can increase or decrease the relationship of the chosen character. It's quite significant. - Inn items, you said it. - Hope/torch : the lower the torch, the higher the chance of negative reaction instead of positive. - Listing all combat action succeptible to trigger a change. The most frequent one being a skill that target an ally (man-at-arms protection can increase several point by triggering several time). Though it does also trigger the negatives chances when under heavy stress + low light. - You can check the current relations progress in the character sheet. - There are sometimes minor malus to good relation, and bonus to bad relation. Most frequent one being a +1 stress to someone when he sees a positive ally get hit (Lover or codependant). There is the opposite with the hatred that reduce stress by 1. Sometimes it wrecks you because of a lack of stress management intead of being a good thing :/. - There are rare traits or coach items to trigger more/less bad/good relations. I think that's most of it. Comments will correct me.

Question, so on skills like Noxious blast, it doesn't say the % it has to apply the effect, so is it assumed to be 100% all the time? Like if an enemy has a 30% chance to resist, I'll ONLY ever have a 70% to apply the effect? Because in DD1, you can obviously increase the base of such a skill well past 100%, especially with trinkets.

You definitely do not. The games stand apart, but the worlds are intertwined in a sense. There are small elements that carry over but nothing that would make me say you need to play the first game fully to enjoy DD2

You don’t need to play the first game but you should cause it’s amazing and very different from the sequel. Plus it’s more complete at the moment, DD2 is significantly easier though and takes less time to beat so it’s up to you.

I think there will be a lot more characters by the end of early access and beyond. I’m really hoping for new characters as opposed to returning ones, but I wouldn’t be upset to see houndmaster arbalest or vestal return as right now PD is the only character who really fits in the 4th rank.

Almost impossible to beat the game on the first go? Nah, it's easy(-ish?): cheese the relationships to the max and create an unstoppable conga line of polyamory. At first it can be pretty hard, as even on neutral your four little turdnuggets want nothing more than to sabotage each other. But keep the stress low and find try to get the friendly at least to start. No spoilers, but the last boss is still almost unfairly strong and needs foreknowledge and the right preparation so it doesn't just push your shit in. It straight at the end of the road, you'll probably know when you're about to face it,you definitely want to prepare everything you can before initiating the fight.

The game is good in its current state, and because I can see where it’s going I think it’s going to be great. Roguelites aren’t for everyone so that’s a big factor, and a lot of people are mad they didn’t just make the same game with better graphics. Mostly just doing well on the relationships and predicting the nature of the final boss correctly enough (or by looking up a guide, if that's your thing). I went into the boss with wrong gear and skills and almost got bootyblasted. Nobody died, but everybody were under 25% health close to tipping.

Yeah, Beautiful game. Immediately love the look. But calling it an improvement that they took away gear, and allow you to only equip two trinkets and a single upgrade via the mastery system is definitely not something I'd be quick to say. I really thought they would go deeper, not more shallow with customization. I'll be there to support it the whole way, but man i hope they get busy in Early Access. Also, my characters constantly talking beforte every single turn makes me want to put 5 minutes into the game and quit each time. Combat is slooooooow.

It's not Darkest Dungeon 2 at that moment, feverishly managing despair and barely staying afloat, it's an episode of Maury.

@@iw5162 prioritize having very low stress and your heros will stay mostly positive. Using the PD stress relief is essential, upgrade the spell on the first run. Also bolster from MAA is important. On my run we get almost all maxed out relationship status and the result is a rather easy run.

Thanks for this video. Now i know that this game is not for me, as i hate roguelites with a passion and starting the same shit over and over is like antithesis of fun. DD1 was also quite boring after few hours, as it required a lot of grind to level characters up. Seems like this studio has a great talent of creating awesome looking and atmospheric games, but containing annoying, grindy and tiresome gameplay. Not for me.

I like some changes, and I think artstyle is pretty cool, the "2.5D", but it needs balancing. There are way, way too many thing that negatively impacts your heroes and party and there's really no way to manage it like you could in first game. No ability to camp and refresh HP and stress like you could in first game (in mid run). Limited amount of items that can be carried, but you can't use most of them while traveling, which results in bunch of items needing to be discarded. I had one run where my party was relatively ok, then some random event happens and two of them have meltdown and lose all of their HP to like 2-3hp left, and this was one node right before stage boss fight. So of course, I get random ambush, followed by lair fight. I somehow survive that, but nope, there's still one more ambush fight right before boss. Oh and you know how happens to be that? The space alien thing from first game. It's way, way too OP for such early game. Sure, you could fight it in DD1 as well very early, however there you actually had to trigger that encounter, while here it just happen randomly like basic ambush. Game balance is way too broken right now. It's fun when game is challenging, but not when they just throw random shit at you like this and call it difficulty.

I feel like it's a downgrade in both gameplay and art style. I'm especially annoyed at the change to 3D. There's just something about indie 3D that never quite looks right. DD2 isn't as bad as Risk of Rain 2, but still, it just feels empty (travelling down a road looks so bad). Actually travelling down each road seems like a chore that'll serve no major purpsoe other than slowing you down. There's a reason games like Slay the Spire just immediately get you to the destination you picked on the map. Micromanaging multiple teams was so good in the first game, I cannot, for the life of me, understand why they would get rid of such a great feature.

I agree. Obviously the art and presentation and everything is amazing but the pointless carriage sections just don’t make sense to me. I wish their time and resources had gone into something else. The hallways in the original weren’t anything special, but there was a lot to manage during them and i think it added another element of depth to the game. This seems to lack that. I didn’t want a copy-pasted version of the original game or anything, but it’s systems and gameplay loop were so good that I can’t comprehend why they would change the core experience so drastically. Not having The Hamlet/a hub town is a baffling decision considering so much of DD1 revolved so heavily around it. It was literally half the game. I thought the sequel would double down on that and make it feel like more of a living, breathing town with even more resources to manage (like imagine it having a shop system like Moonlighter/Recettear or relationships to manage between townspeople like Stardew Valley or one-time game changing decisions of some kind). I don’t know. I’m going to wait and see how it changes between now and launch but as of right now it seems like an inferior experience to the original in many ways. I’m salty about the Epic Games Store exclusivity so I’m probably being a little needlessly harsh on it, and I’m sure the game is a ton of fun as is, but it kinda seems like it could have just been an original IP instead of using the Darkest Dungeon name. It seems like an almost entirely different experience than the original minus the returning characters.

You press W instead of D. It's not much different from the original walking mechanic in that respect. I'm sure curios will be added later, or some other wagon mechanic. That change to the party system is the only part I feel weird about, but I'm just glad it'll be less grindy.
