Video is great, but very “beginner-centric” One thing would be a (subjective) comparison of the “feel” of the row and stroke? (Compared to concept2, water-rower, on water) Hydrow is shorter, Is the track length the same? (If you’re +6ft) Changing drag factor? Can you get it heavy enough for a good heavy sprint? Any speed difference in a 2k?

Look at the quality, it will break with any amount of use.notice the anchor point. On both the ski erg and paddle the thing is moving all over the place, the pump anchor point will break off. The same on the row erg look at the movement, a person with consistent power will break it off. The need to do a lot of testing, like a year to make sure it does not break. It is kick starter I would be carefully buying any on these products for long term use and repairs.

I bought a C2 and while on waiting list I found and downloaded and started rowing at my local Y with the Hydrow app. LOVE the app... so I row on a new C2 at home now with the app running on my iphone. Absolutely love the combo and the things that make sense for me - 1.)the BASIC membership for the app is only $20 per month instead of $38 2.) still get in on challenges and online groups and great pilates/movement mat work with olympian Peter Donohoe and others 3.) can separate the C2 and lean against the wall tucking away 4.) don't need the wifi of the Hydrow can run app off phone on wifi or data and don't need electricity. I did try a Hydrow at BBuy....maybe I am too much a newb only rowing for a year or so as it didn't seem a big diff in performance other than sound. 5.) love, love, love the coaching and virtual reality of the on the water rows and athletes - many olympians, champions. CONS: if you are super competitive the leader board can push you along mentally. Like a Peloton. With the BASIC app that is not in play. That is not my personality type to game it like that so I am okay. Also only one profile on the BASIC app....which works for me. And no "live" rows...but they do show up within a week or so to the app in an edited form. The app is free for a month....try it out you c2-ers.

I think the review was fair. I am wondering what you have to go through, should the hydrow break... the concept 2 seems easier to "fix" Also, if after a year, you decide not to pay the subscription, is it a paperweight? And there is really nothing stopping them from increasing that sub rate. Things to think about. Seems like a cool idea, and down below, someone remarked you can get the app on your phone .. that might make more sense. Thanks Shane, and thanks Shane's pregnant wifey. Stay well.

I stopped watching after five minutes. This is pathetic. You have to suffer through ads and then listen to an informercial from a paid representative of hydrow. I am sure that the Hydrow is a fine machine. But it’s probably not worth the double it costs and have to pay a monthly fee on top of it. There is NO monthly cost to a C2 and so that is a blatant misrepresentation suggesting they are doing an apples to apples comparison. When we can go back to gyms again you will mostly see C2 machines. So if you want to do relatively comparable workouts it makes sense to stick with the venerable Concept2. If you want to pay more than double, be my guest. Otherwise this is pure clickbait.

@@sotampacane I don't know if this was a paid sponsor video or not, maybe getting the machine to try (or own? Not sure.) for free for this review may be a conflict of interest? It's a weird gray area. The rower doesn't look awful and I get that some people want that high-end rowing experience and don't mind the cost at all... I'm not one of those people myself. I was on the wait list for my Concept 2 Model D ERG for 3 months (during Covid shortages) and I am super happy with it all around.

@@sotampacane I said it plainly to be 100% transparent as early as possible and you're acting as if it's some crazy money grab...they did not pay for this video. I was not compensated. I have an affiliate relationship which if you purchase the machine after clicking the link I would make a % that costs nothing more to the person who makes the purchase. The machine was given to me by Hydrow. If you didn't watch the video then you have no idea that I broke this down as simply and as close as I could get to apples to apples without them being copies of each other and removed any opinionated material about either machine.

Had my C2 for over 10 years and it’s the best thing I have ever bought. I’m a PT and I take it in the back of my van on a regular basis so a Hydrow would not work for me here. In fact portability is a big factor for me as I mostly row on my deck in the garden. I can’t comment on the differences between how each rower feels as I’ve never tried the Hydrow. But to me, all the info I need is right there on my PM5. Numbers shown give me all the motivation I need. It’s so easy to set up and and use. I think for people that are exercise adverse, the Hydrow could be a good rower, but I love all aspects of exercise and use rowing to supplement my kettlebell lifting. The price and monthly subscription are also a bit turn off. The C2 is tried and tested and mine has given faultless performance over the 10 years of ownership.

As a cyclist, this seems quite parallel to the peloton vs wahoo kickr comparison. People new to the sport and looking for things such as guided workouts, motivation, and general fitness will largely lean towards the hydrow/peloton, but the people who know what they’re doing will go for the concept2/kickr. Same goes for running, with Fitbit vs Garmin market. It is not apples to apple… 2 completely different markets with some overlap.

Separating out the specific parts and tools for each of the seven step assembly process steps was brilliant on the part of the manufacturer. For the price, I am impressed at how sturdy this kzbin.infoUgkxvObaTzoHoHQLL4lHbJQmExHqsrZQm-f7 unit is and it does go together easily. Well, I was puzzled at first at Step 5 and maybe the instructions should mention that rail #62 needs to be tilted upwards a little to get the rail to fit into the main part #44. I like it that the rower can be stored vertically in a really small amount of space, but be forewarned that this rower is top heavy and for safety you'll need at least two bungee cords to keep the unit upright, attaching them to something; in my case to a third garage door. I have had this unit only a short time, and I will post an update once I've had it for a year. As for working your legs, I have to admit that I'm mainly rowing for upper body strength and I use other forms of exercise for leg strength (like walking fast, biking, or using a trampoline. But if you pull as far forward as possible, then you can give preference to your legs for the first 4 feet or so of travel. I also admit to not taking the two electronic connectors apart at Step 7. I simply inserted the two batteries while the other parts remained connected. By the way, there is plenty of resistance here, even in the lowest resistance settings. Kudos to Sunny Health & Fitness !

We've had our C2 rower for 6 years now. When we bought it, the fact that you could still buy parts from the first models they made and the parts were reasonably priced is the reason we went with C2. In 6 years we haven't had to buy a single replacement part for a needed repair (we did upgrade to a pm5 monitor although our pm4 still worked fine) I've only had 1 single complaint with the C2 and that is the monitor not staying on long enough when doing intervals with other exercises. I'd row 500, hop off and do my box jumps, kb swings etc then have to bring up the monitor again when I got back on. Well talk about user error! I just found out within the last month that if you set up a distance interval, you can set the rest timer to "undefined" and when you hop back on you just hit the one button and go and the monitor stays on for 10 minutes. I'm kicking myself for not checking into all the settings when I got it!

Looks like I may be the first Hydrow user to weigh in here . I'm new to rowing and was looking to add a different type of workout to swimming laps and Peloton. With an aging spine I was a bit hesitant about rowing but it's been the best thing I've ever done for my back and have lost 20 # since I started rowing about 5 months ago. I looked carefully at both the Concept 2 and Hydrow , downloaded a bunch of Shane's videos and still subscribe to his newsletter. I think Dark Horse Rowing is a great service to the rowing community! In the end though I chose the Hydrow because I thought it would keep me more engaged rowing with instructors who were on the water with me. I didn't fully appreciate it at the time but each row provides valuable instructions on technique and form in real time. I liked the competitiveness of the leader board on the Peloton and the Hydrow is quite similar; it's what motivates me to row harder. The live rows are fun and cycle through different times during the week. As Shane says there are a bunch of different instructors and their styles and personalities differ which creates some further variety. The banked rows in the library really do feel like you are on the water with them and not at all "like a video game" as was mentioned in one of the comments. If you have a Peloton bike and enjoy that kind of a workout, the Hydrow really is quite similar except the metrics provided are for now more limited. Audio connectivity with bluetooth speakers ( Sonos and Airpod Pros) can also be a little buggy at times. I get that the price difference between the two machines and the monthly fee for Hydrow could be a significant deciding factor if the user experience on the Concept 2 is comparable. I appreciated the stats and comparisons (price, dimensions, noise level, foot pad, handle, monitor, connectivity, platform etc.) but the essence of the rowing experience seemed to be missing from both the review of the Hydrow and the Concept 2. Shane, maybe a follow up video addressing that would help others who are still on the fence decide which of these 2 great machines is best suited for them. For those who have already purchased a machine..... this really is not a pissing contest. It's a great community; we are all in this together. Let's respect our differences.

I completely agree Andrew! I would buy my Hydrow all over again, given the chance to choose again. I love how interactive it is - and really feel like it's helped me improve my on the water rowing as well. As I researched the 2 machines, I did hear someone say the Concept 2 is nearly indestructible and won't break down, but from what I have seen belonging to the Hydrow Facebook community - Hydrow has been awesome at replacing machines or seats if there is a problem. I also love all the challenges they offer - I am anxiously awaiting the T-shirt I won during the Commit to fit fall challenge! Off to check the mail! :)

Howdy! Hydrow owner here. As someone who's rowed on both, for me, the Hydrow is definitely worth the money if you can afford it. I feel like the rowing is a lot smoother, and having the scenery of the outdoor rows and coaches keeps me much more engaged than just trying to row on my own. I'm certainly willing to pay for the leaderboard, classes on demand, etc. on an on going basis rather than spend the $38 a month on something else., mainly because it helps me really enjoy the workouts. I can get a good workout in on a C2, but I get super bored and if I don't have "it" in me on a particular day, I likely won't push myself as hard. I can get killer workouts in on the Hydrow while still enjoying them and competing in real time with other athletes. But yes, if opting for the Hydrow over the C2 means you don't pay rent this month, definitely don't buy the Hydrow. Or if you are a world class rower who follows a really specific regimen, you probably don't need the Hydrow either. But if you're someone who wants a good way to stay in shape and be excited about your workouts (and can afford it), I think Hydrow is a great option.

@@brianbgood what's your email? I can send you a video of it. As for the noise, during a guided workout with music, I don't notice the noise (compared to a C2 where I need to turn my headphones way louder when I row). During a journey, you would probably notice it at first and then get used to it, but it is definitely audible. It's a fairly innocuous humming sound. For whatever reason, whenever I see KZbin videos of the sound, it doesn't replicate well over the computer, not sure if it's a recording thing or speakers, but it never really sounds like what the machine actually sounds like. Compared to a water rower, it's definitely quieter, but I could see how some people would like the sound of the water rower.

It feels like its Apple and PC but for rowing machines (Hydrow being Apple with a super integrated/closed system and Concept2 being PC with its more open system that allows customization especially tech and connectivity wise). Though I'm an Apple user for my tech, I'll stick with my Concept2 rower, more affordable, more flexible in terms how I use it and being able easily fix/get a sense of the mechanics (should I need to repair anything) is comforting. The Hydrow does look cool, and has interesting features though, just don't think it's for me. Thanks for the walkthrough Shane!

Enjoyed the review. Recently bought a rower, actually considered the Hydro. A couple of things put me off. The price difference I could have lived with, but the almost $ 500 a year fee was a big negative. The weight was also a problem. In the final analysis I doubt the actual hydro mechanics are superior to the C2 . So for a lot less I can buy an iPad and iPad holder and find plenty of entertainment for my workout. The C2 has certainly stood the test of time and I’m sure my C2 will survive longer than I will. Not so sure about the Hydro.

I have a 350$ magnetic rower at home (Viavito) and I use a Concept2 at the gym while everyone else queues for the Technogym Skillrow. IMHO, the “electronics” are a diversion for the weaknesses of the machine. My favorite among the 3 above is the Concept2: I’m heavy-ish (118kg) the limit on my home machine is 120kg, the Concept doesn’t bat an eyelid when I use it. You can feel that I’ll be in a box well before the Concept2. On the software: I think a subscription close to what I pay for the gym (which has to pay rent, building and swimming pool maintenance, staff etc) cannot be justified for software animations or videos broadcasted to hundreds of not thousands of users. I would have made an exception for Kinomap, because they work with any machine and use the phone camera to evaluate your stroke cadence, it’s pretty neat. However from one day to the next, the “free” version was discontinued under the excuse that Apple and Google Play don’t allow free versions of software on the AppStore (which can only be bollocks) so I removed them from my wish list.

We use Concept 2 in the local gym, they’re robust, feel great to use and easy to fix - they have all the replacement parts available for very reasonable cost. And the Concept 2 Skierg - try that it’s a great workout! Not sure about fixing the Hydrow, bet they’re not so open with spares. And when that screen dies, that’s it. With the C2 it’ll work fine without the monitor anyway if you don’t want to miss a workout. And the monitor is battery powered so portable - take it outside, rowing outside is soooo cool! (It tips up on wheels so easy to move around). I haven’t tried them, but if you’ve got lots of room you can get C2 slides - which makes you and the whole machine move like you’re on the water! Finally, C2 are great at supporting old machines they don’t make any more. So your investment will keep running for decades 😎

For me, I found your channel to learn about improving my row technique. I found the integrated "ecosystem" of the Hydrow easy for a newb like me to jump on the machine, pick a warm-up and a work-out, and get after meters after a long day at work. Hi Shane great review! I’d make one comment about how C2 generates resistance. The flywheel is design as a centrifugal pump. It just so happens it pumps air, a low density liquid. Opening the damper allows more air into the eye of the impeller and the rotation throws the air to the edge of the flywheel and creates the wind you feel.. More air in per stroke equals more mass moved equal more watts required. The acceleration changes by the power (watts) consumed by the volume of air moving through the system This is translated to Drag Factor, which equates to boat speed

Excellent, fair review. It wouldn't be for me, main reason the initial price and more importantly the ongoing monthly fee. My Concept2 is still going strong 10+ years later and suspect it will be in another 10. Paid once and that was it. I can see the Hydrow appealing to the Pelton type of user and it has some neat features. Seemed to remind me a bit of the old story about the space race and the Americans (Hydrow) spending fortunes trying to make a pen that would work in space. The Russians (Concept2) just took a pencil. I've had a Concept 2 a little over a year, I'm still in love with it, and can't imagine switching. The Hydrow tech is kind of cool, but I didn't see anything that would entice me to give up my Model D, even if the Hydrow was the same price or even a little cheaper. I'm an engineer and engineers are big believers in KISS (keep it simple stupid). Concept 2 has figured out how to keep it as simple as possible and keep it reliable, with a machine that engineers love. How long will it take for Hydrow to develop a similar reputation? Zwift is apparently adding Rowing in the near future which would definitely be a game changer for Concept2 since the BikeErg PM5 already works in Zwift for interactive cycling workouts, racing, group rides, etc. I have to assume if this happens that Concept2 will be there day 1 with its market share with the rowing community. You can hook a rower PM5 to an iPad or iPhone apps today and covert the rower watts to bike watts which is fun. Adding actual rowing avatars would really give Concept2 a big advantage for people looking for live competition which is its biggest weakness. Hydrow definitely has its place as I equate it more to what Peloton does which is a live spin/rowing class with some competition. I competed against a lot of the coaches on Hydrow and happy its becoming successful. It's just a different target audience than Concept2 users in my opinion much like Zwift/Trainer Road and other Virtual bike applications attract different user bases than a very good, successful Peloton product

Use a concept 2 with your ipad - save a grand. Well probably more as there are plenty of concepts which work fine 20 years later. Not saying the hydrow is bad but the concept 2 is like a Porsche - great initial first design then refined over decades, and massive aftermarket for spare parts - you buy one for life. I'm pretty sure concept 2 could come up with an app pretty easily and solve what they are missing on the screen - they are not missing anything mechanically.

Great review. I couldn't justify paying a monthly subscription along with the high price of the Hydrow. The Concept 2 tethered to a wide choice of Apps works for me, ErgZone and ErgData are great for logging, and there are plenty of rowalong videos on YT to workout to, such as your channel and many others. I also noticed the refresh rate of the touch screen when you was scrolling the Hydrow was very laggy. For such a high price tag I would expect a better interactive display experience. It feels a bit gimmicky to be to be honest. If price wasn't an issue I think I would still go with a water rower but the C2 is still gold standard at an affordable price for me as a noob.

I would prefer a machine like the high tech stationary bikes and treadmills at gyms. You could select different work outs such as a fixed resistance to interval training. Maybe a club race event to compete against other members or maybe even a computer generated rower for pacing. World tours to explore different regions of the world. Also classes that could be real-time or join when convenient. You could have monthly fees for personal training or real-time classes, but also free access to standard functions listed previously. I actually like the large screen, but the monthly fees, turns me off to the hydros.

You could buy the concept 2 rower and the Concept 2 bike erg for the same price as the Hydro rower. I own both by the way. The Bike erg is the best stationary bike I have ever rode. I have been going to gyms for 40yrs and tried many. The concept 2 rower is far superior to this hydro rower. You do not want a pc driven rower. The computer components fail and then guess what? You have nothing. The concept 2 rower is light, moveable, and is proven by years. The Concept 2 machines are made so well that you could literally leave them to your kids. I want the ski erg but I need to try it first as my shoulder has an issue and I can not agravate it. The Concept2 is probably one of the last few company's that make good stuff still.

You have to commend Hydrow for having the courage (& vision) to look at the C2 and imagine what might be. That said, it would seem easier for C2 to bolt on LED touch-screens and videos in years to come, than for Hydrow to establish a comparable reputation for utility and reliability....not to mention the Olympic rower street (water) cred.

Really surprised how little discussion there is here about, you know....the actual, physical rowing experience on the Hydrow vs Concept2. Does the catch feel any different? You can adjust drag factor on the Hydrow, so what did you notice about that aspect? Does the resistance feel any different through the stroke on the Hydrow given that it’s an electromagnet (I assume) and not a fan/damper based system? You’re also really well qualified to speak to the actual quality and content of the workouts from a coaching perspective but you hardly mentioned it.

G'day Shane - chiming in from Victoria, Australia. Hydrow looks cool. Teched-up to the hilt, and all, but... I've had my Concept since 1998 and she still goes as good now as when purchased. That's almost a quarter century of service without fail, which I feel would be a hell of a stretch from the Hydrow. Also, there's just something about the old Concept that allows me row for the sake of rowing's sake: the Concept ain't Super Model pretty or pretend to be a cool kid from Silicon Valley, but it doesn't need to be and, frankly, I wouldn't want it any other way.

Thank you Shane for doing a fair review of these two machines. Before you even said, I thought the Hydrow looks to be the Peloton for the rowing community. Maybe, if I was new to rowing I might consider it, but as with Pelton, if I was going to spend that kind of money, I would likely go with a good quality road bike, a turbo and Zwift, which would give me a lot of the functionality of a Peloton, plus the ability to go outdoors and also to use my bike to commute too! In other words, in the long run, I feel it would be better overall value and practicality, as well as not being tied into one supplier or group. I believe the same applies to the Concept2, that is it does what you need it to and offers you more if you want it. Though, it will still work well on its own in your home. While not having as much tech up front as the Hydrow, it is less likely to become obsolete. In my case, I have own my C2 D for 12 years. It has 6 million meters on it and is nearly in the same condition when I unpacked and assembled it, on the day that it was delivered. Since I have owned it, beyond performing the minimum required maintenance on it, as specified in the owner’s manual, the only money that I have spent on it was to upgrade (it was not required or needed, I just wanted the Bluetooth) its monitor to the PM5 ($150)and just recently to replace the flywheel sensor and the shock cord, which is what pulls the handle back at the of the stroke, in all about $37. As for everything else, the Erg app and the online the online log book, I concur with your assessment. I would add too that C2 has a large and active community of rowers, groups and clubs that cater to those looking to train and to complete with others, or, looking for social engagement. Concept2 also hosts a number of challenges throughout the year, for those of us that are looking for more engagement and a chance to measure themselves against their cohorts. In the end, it would seem that both machines work well and will help you get the desired results, if you are ready to put in the work. If you are new to rowing and training and like, or, need the experience of being in a group or class like environment the Hydrow is likely the machine for you, just as Peloton bike would be for a non bike rider, or, the spin class participant. The C2 will more than likely be the device for the serious on the water rower, or, athletes that is comfortable and capable of training on their own and is able to self motivate.

I hope and pray the reviews are accurate for quality, which I fully expect they will be. However, be aware/advised, as a recent cash purchaser that took advantage of the Black Friday sale, was disappointed to learn the day after and a few days after, they added over $300+ in extra equipment for the same purchase. This is great for those who procrastinated, but for me; customer service and sales should have made one aware. I guess I remember the old days of brick and mortar store integrity. It squarely falls on me and I look forward to the workouts and use [and hopefully weight-loss and conditioning] and I hope it gives me years of good service as I am now concerned Customer Service is just a 'refusal' department...I'll update on the equipment but honestly believe it will be great! Great review, for me who's new to rowing I chose the C2 (I didn't know about the hydrow before now to be honest) quite simply as I see it as robust in build and also flexible in apps, seeing the hydrow now it appears to be possibly for the more casual market? Also is the C2 getting Zwift row?

Hydrow is tough to move around (weight, size, electrical plug required), so you have to decide where it goes and never move it. Also, can't lend it out easily, so others can try it... Skeptical of most, but echelon also has a Peleton bike setup that makes me curious about being able to integrate multiple pieces of equipment through one app. I’d also note right now the C2 is running $1,300-1,400 dollars from indirect sellers if someone is looking to jump the wait list.

I don't see the hyrow as aimed at the general fitness market. A lot of people row on an intervals basis while lifting. My C2 lives in two pieces in my power rack until I put it together to use it. I can do an interval, jump off and wheel it out of the way, do pushups or bench, woodchoppers, chin ups, whatever, wheel it back into position, jump back on, repeat. I am sure I could do the same thing on the Hydrow but why? That monitor is just added fragility for no purpose for that kind of workout, even if the user experience with the resistance feels as good.

Concept 2 all day long. Built like a tank / time tested, monitor is open source for apps, used for world records, weighs less so it's portable, and no subscription. If you look at the cost of ownership over 5 years - Concept 2: $1021.50 vs Hydrow: $2168.92 + (60 months x $38 = $2280) = $4,448.92 Not to mention gambling on the maintenance costs... I don't see any guarantees for meters rowed nor how long the monitor will last on Hydrow. Also... if you stop paying $38 a month you no longer have a functional rower? I can't support that business model, nor should you. Over that 5 year span I could outfit an entire home gym with a squat rack, plates, dumbbells, etc. for the price difference ($3,427.42) and still have money left over.
