Hey, I know this is a bit old, but something that might be helpful is understanding that each line is a guideline for orienting. So the vertical line on the side is half way on the side and indicates where the ear is. That kind of thing. It lets you break up a big space like a rectangular plane into proportional pieces which indicates where each piece of the face goes. Try just leaning the proportions and the purpose of each line individually before adding everything on. Since it’s symmetric you only have to learn half ;)

I felt 5he same. Still do, but relying on the construction frames does help build a better drawing. Developing a lighter touch and finding the right frames that click for you are the tricky parts. This tutorial helped me with ear placement, something my 50 or so drawing books never explained in a way that I understood. I tend towards digital art for finishing, but you can get light pads fairly cheap for tracing clean line art traditionally. I often use a colored pencil to make it easier to see my pencil or ink lines easier. I miss lines a lot if I use the same color to trace. Wishing you the best of luck!

The way I see it, simple geometry makes it easier to grasp 3D perspective. Imagine the head is in a glass box. If you draw it from the front, you only see the front plane and can draw a portrait in 2D. If you start looking at the glass box from different angles you'll see how the perspective changes on the head the same way it does on the simple box.

Thanks for the tip! I recall seeing this explained before, but not as well. Always a circle shoved in the middle, or an egg shape. Trying the technique actually improved my face drawings quite a bit. And it made the facial proportions much more stable, so I could draw a few different angles better!

i mean, if you want to make sure the head/face is facing any directions correctly, using a cube/box is better than a sphere. you could tell the front side better with a box than a sphere. i usually do both box (for angle/facing direction) and sphere (cuz head is just a ball) for the head.

I have comprehension issues so do you have thing where we can send in photos and get feedback. Also is the ear on its on plane in the box method or seperate? Second question do you keep the head shape in side the box or can you expand it on the outside? And what do you mean half way mark for the ear? Fourth question how would you draw the head looking downwards I dont understand the angle or perspective. Fifth question what is a tapper and what does it help with. I've been avoiding help because I get anxious 😢😅.
