This was a great movie, and the scenes where people were making fun of Glibert's mom was some of the hardest things I've ever had to watch on screen. It's painful to think about this kind of prejudice, and being judged solely on appearance.

I live near Dallas. Lived in it for years. I think I'd adore meeting Darlene. It'd been about a decade since I'd seen What's Eating Gilbert Grape, when I found it again and decided to introduce my teens to it. They loved the movie and thought it was very sweet. My son said, "I think it's awful how the people in that show treated her." My daughter said in response to the elderly man taking a photo of Momma, as she was leaving the police station, "That's too much. That right there is when I'd have taken his camera away from him and broken it, asking him if he had any morals or compassion!" I was very proud of my kids in those moments of reactions while watching this movie. It means that I've raised them well, and they know the struggles of weight loss and gaining are very real. I'm 300lbs, and I struggle hard to fight and lose. I also have lupus and Fibro, along with a few other smaller issues. So it really challenges me. I still get up and go though. I live on an acre of land, and I mow it. I do everything I can to remain mobile, but I also know the pain of feeling like a burden. I have bad days too, where I just cannot move like I want, and it's hard. But I have a wonderful husband and children to help me, and that makes the world worth while. Darlene's youth reminds me so very much of my own in some places. :( These are things I would love to talk to her about. Knowing someone else who went through similar challenges... I'm so happy to see she is still alive and doing well. I imagine she is a wonderful woman to know. I read her biography, and had to chuckle when I got to the part about Richard Simmons. Not at all surprised he'd be a diva. LOL!

It’s a shame that obese people go through so much humiliation. Of all the addictions, this one shows itself more than them all. A drinker or drug addict can hide their addictions but a food addiction is impossible to hide. They literally wear their addiction on their body. It’s such a shame.

And Johnny Depp loved her so much. And everything he kept apologizing for the things that he had to say about her.. he hated that so much. I believe that most actors would not do that they go to play part probably go in their trailer don't care. Not Johnny, that really hurt his heart because several times in the film he had to make derogatory statements about her to her., make fun of her help children Look in the window and giggle at her , but afterwards he would apologize to her. I believe that he Leo, and she all deserved an Oscar for their performance!

When I was young my mother taught me to never ever stare at people. She said it makes people feel uncomfortable and they won't like you. So to this day if I see somebody that I feel is different from me I always think that maybe I am different to them. And I always think back to what my mother said to me. Try and make everybody feel comfortable and not uncomfortable.

I will always love Darlene Cates and I pray to god that she's at peace now and that she has made such an impact on my life with my momma when she was alive and had weight problems and she had tried for yrs and yrs and finally lost the weight she wanted being only 5' tall and 130lbs at one point she had Jean's on again after idk so many yrs that it seemed like the 1st time of me seeing her in them that she was stunning. Idk why the docs said that she was too skinny bc she wasnt she was very healthy at that point and even in the correct BMI. But they gave her a med for they said one thing but I believe that it was for her to put on weight when they told her for yrs to loose loose loose weight or you can die. It still will never make sense but one of the meds didnt fit well with her and shortly after a shot and these new meds my momma turned 70 on June 2nd and on Sept 6th,2019 I had sadly and will never forget finding my momma no longer with us and passed on. Bc of the maintenance taking their time I should have broken the window or kicked the door in bc I could have possibly been their in time to save her even though I know she wouldn't have wanted that but I just wanted my momma so badly and layed on her chest after I tried to see if I could do CPR and seen it was too late and I just cried and begged her to stop and please wake up and I told her one thing I never let her know. And that was how scared I was to be without her bc she was my bestfriend and my only true friend that never JUDGED me and vice versa. I still feel so alone even though I have my daughter who I love so much. I just am not taking this well since I was the only one to be their for my momma in every way she needed me. I drove her to doc appts, to the stores, get her meds, and sit down and talk with her about everything for hours on end and loved her grandchild/my daughter Annabelle and we used to wait til she got home at times to go shopping at certain stores bc Annabelle was her helper to check prices or grab something that she just couldn't get and they both loved every moment. They had their own very special bond. And I love my momma even more for that. We laughed, cried, and tried to be their for one another as much as we could and I told her 2 days before her passing that she will never be put away in any kind of home. She will be with me as she laughed and said but we fight like animals and I said yes we do but I will have to stop my mouth and make sure your doing well and fine. And I will give you a bedroom and a nice big TV to watch your shows and since I'm on the 2nd floor I was looking to order a chairlift for her and told her about it and she said mandy I will not be your burden and I said the only way you'll be my burden is if you don't come to live with me when it's time. Ok and she said ok .
